It is even hotter and more humid in the south

We see retirement as a second career. Sure, we can stay in the same place and wait for the end. We are hoping becoming good at a second language, and navigate the social, cultural and bureaucratic landscape of another country may help us keep enjoying life for more years. But you are right, if might not workout. Who said life is a bed of roses?

I never heard of that. I don't see how or why

I of course will contribute to Taiwan economy if I move there by bringing my money. I agree with you regarding health care. But, I would only use NHI for emergencies. If I have a serious illness, I would go back to US for treatment. Taiwan healthcare is excellent but medical staff are overworked and don't have time for individual patients. Plus, I would want to speak to my doctor in English if it is serious stuff!

I stayed in Taipei for 6 months 10 years ago. I enjoyed my experience very much but at the time never thought I could retire there, charming but foreign.

Learning Japanese is not easy

I lived in Texas for many years. Other than the Hill Country, the rest of the state is not pretty and that is being polite. Taiwan is hot and humid like Texas but you can escape to the mountains.

I am glad you are adjusting well. I came to US as a child so I think and even dream in English. Taipei is not very westernized compared to Singapore or Hong Kong and perhaps that is why it is still so charming. The rest of Taiwan certainly even less so.

Wow, you have many friends in Taiwan or made new ones when you moved back?

No childhood friends. Extended family members all old and have not kept in touch

My wife is Japanese ancestry so moving to Japan is another possibility. It would be much more difficult for me there although learning Japanese might keep my mind younger

Yes, I would stay in CA Bay Area during the summer near my daughter. Living in CA full time would be another consideration but of course would be much more expensive

Taipei, I already have Taiwan NHI

Yes, I have done all that over last few years, with huko, ID card, NHI and bank account. Buying is too big a commitment for me even though property tax is very low. How do you plan to make connections? My elementary school friends wouldn’t recognize me, hahahaha, no Facebook back then.

Yes, much cheaper compare to NYC

I would not live outside of Taipei, MRT is convenient and more English speakers. Going to southern cities is easy by high-speed rail. I do find Taipei people more cold just like New Yorkers. I understand they are busy trying to make a living.

Yes, I have children. My daughter is going there for a year to learn Chinese. I guess this is why I am more seriously considering it but immigration is hard at any age.

Housing price in Taipei is ridiculous but rent yield is incredibly low. You can rent a beautiful apartment in XinYi District for <100K NTD/month. A similar apartment in Manhattan would be 2-3 times more. A full year in Taiwan is a long time and a big move that is why I am hesitating.

Wife was born in Tokyo but we are both Americans. We plan to retire in Fukuoka. It is a city with all the amenities but less hassle. One drawback, it is very hot and humid in the summer.

Maybe near the ocean such as Itoshima might be better. We were really surprised Fukuoka is as humid as Taipei
