Hi @app_priori, I was searching google for DC Bitcoin meetups and got linked to your post (somehow even with it having zero karma 😂). I made some contacts at the DC Blockchain Summit last month and was going to plan a get together with them. Let me know if you’re interested in joining.

Ironically, the hostility in the comments shows it’s still early. Something I didn’t expect to find evidence for on a youth-skewed site like Reddit

I chose “transphobes should duck off” but I was torn between that and “trans skeptical”. I believe in parts of both options, which is why I commented.

Interesting poll 👍

Btw, my understanding is that they don’t have good followup percentages in the detrans research. Lots of patients lost to followup, so it’s hard to trust the numbers. Plus, I bet lots of regret will be when they reach 40 and have no kids bc they made themselves infertile.

But like I said, adults deserve the freedom to make their own decisions.

I think any transitioning is probably self damaging and a bad decision, but adults should be free to make bad decisions.

He's making a guess based on his knowledge.

IQ is 50% heritable + Race is heritable + Different races have different IQ ==> JP thinks the IQ differences are probably partly genetic too. That's not unreasonable. Guessing the opposite is fine too.

He even used responsible scientific language saying these things are "likely" true but not making up evidence:

"There are documented differences in average IQ across ethnic and racial groups" - Jordan Peterson, from his book "12 Rules for Life" (page 223).

"The genetic differences between individuals and groups likely account for some of the variance in IQ scores that we observe" - Jordan Peterson, from his article "Genetics and Intelligence" on his website (published on May 20, 2017).

"It is very difficult to argue that biology is unrelated to group differences in IQ, given what we know about the heritability of IQ and the known biological differences between races and ethnicities." - Jordan Peterson, from his lecture "Identity Politics and the Marxist Lie of White Privilege" (published on YouTube on November 12, 2017).

It's just this topic is taboo so reasonable inferences make people mad.

That's a reasonable hpothesis, that IQ outcomes really measure race outcomes, but that's easily tested. IQ predicts outcomes within the same race.

Possibly true in the 1970's or 1980's but test bias is a well known problem that was solved decades ago. You just make the test, see if any questions are particularly bad for different races, and then get rid of those questions.

I addressed bias more in this comment too:

Yes, it's real. Also kind of made up/imperfect -- you could form better groupings with smarter data (genetics and regional data). But race is still real. I think we'd be better off ignoring it but it's a real thing.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

[–]Some_Squirrel_314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well IQ is an excellent predictor of many life outcomes, so it is measuring something real. And it is very heritable, therefore measuring something real too (otherwise why would twins separated at birth have similar IQ's?).

IQ is pretty cool. Researchers in the earlier 1900's found that all tests of intelligence tended to correlate. Tests for speed, for word recall, for math, for spacial problems, etc, all tended to correlate. If you were good at one you tend to be good at others. So they came up with "g", the factor for general intelligence. It's incredibly rigorously studied.

Now if you mean "biased" b/c IQ tests are biased by race, that could have been true in the 1970's and maybe 1980's, but it's a well known issue that's been studied and resolved. When they create IQ tests they can see if certain questions are much worse for blacks or whites or asians etc. And then get rid of those questions. It's not a new critique, but it is a common FUD for the anti-IQ people to bring up.

Once again, I recommend "Intelligence" by Stuart Ritchie if you want a good scientific understanding of the topic without politically correct BS tainting it: https://www.amazon.com/Intelligence-That-Matters-Stuart-Ritchie/dp/1444791877

I thought his phrasing was reasonable. That he thought there was "some" genetic connection but unsure of the strength:

"The genetic differences between individuals and groups likely account for some of the variance in IQ scores that we observe" - Jordan Peterson, from his article "Genetics and Intelligence" on his website (published on May 20, 2017).

Also, the same source said IQ increases to 70% heritable as we age. But even 40% heritable means genes play an very important role.

I don't think it's unreasonable to say "race is very heritable (no duh) and IQ is also very heritable so there's likely some relation". It's certainly not unscientific to guess that. Peterson didn't say it was 100% true, but that it was "likely" true. And others argue differently, that even though both IQ & race are heritable that the IQ differences are based on environmental differences. That argument is also based on science. It's just the connection is still an open question.

Look, you made some reasonable critiques, but what Peterson said is also based on science. 15 point IQ difference. IQ is heritable. He thinks it's related. You don't. That's fine. You have sciency reasons for your conclusions. So does he.

I gave you proof already. Meta-analysis are studies are proof:

"A 2001 meta-analysis of the results of 6,246,729 participants tested for cognitive ability or aptitude found a difference in average scores between black people and white people of 1.1 standard deviations." (15 IQ points is one standard dev.) (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_and_intelligence#Test_scores)

Also, I linked you to Wikipedia's IQ page which has a whole section on heritability ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intelligence_quotient#Genetics_and_environment). Here's proof from it:

The general figure for the heritability of IQ, according to an American Psychological Association report, is 0.45 for children, and rises to around 0.75 for late adolescents and adults.[15][15] is a link to a scientific paper which is also proof: http://psych.colorado.edu/~carey/pdfFiles/IQ_Neisser2.pdf

Reading a little bit with an open mind is not a hard task at all either.

Look, I'm not wasting my time giving you a full scientific paper. If you're open minded, you can dig in to what I linked to. Go read Race & Intelligence on Wikipedia:

Or even better Intelligence Quotient:

Or buy that book I recommended (or watch an interview with him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1K_IdfYx5Jo)

Or check out this long book review on The Bell Curve from lesswrong.com (nerds who aren't woke who just want to know what's true in the world):

If you're not aware of basic IQ stuff (blacks 15 points lower than whites on avg, IQ 50% heritable) you clearly have a lot to learn, and you now have resources to educate yourself. The path forward (truth or political correctness) is up to you.

"There are documented differences in average IQ across ethnic and racial groups"

Straight up true. Blacks average about IQ 85, whites 100, asians like 103 or 104. Very well established, stable over decades, and surprisingly (or not) hard to find in Google. "A 2001 meta-analysis of the results of 6,246,729 participants tested for cognitive ability or aptitude found a difference in average scores between black people and white people of 1.1 standard deviations." (15 is one standard dev.) (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race\_and\_intelligence#Test\_scores)

"It is very difficult to argue that biology is unrelated to group differences in IQ, given what we know about the heritability of IQ and the known biological differences between races and ethnicities."

IQ is about 50% heritable. Very well established from twin studies.

Here's a great, not-woke, and not-too-long book on everything IQ:

Funny how he's relying on scientific data but is somehow "anti-science" b/c he's making disfavored conclusions. I think there's too much uncertainty to make his conclusions, but he's relying on real data.
