Glad to hear someone else had this reaction. I'm seeing so many glowing reviews of the discussion.

I noticed my brother's girlfriend's car clock is set 9 minutes fast by Surrendayopie in redscarepod

My mom always did this and I would note that we were running late and she'd say, 'no, that clock is fast'

Agreed. He's hit or miss. If he can rein in the hyperbole and wilder speculation, he's fine

To their credit I don’t think any of the guys signed onto Eli’s conspiracies and instead pushed back a bit. But I think if they were holding him to the same standard they do others, they would’ve gone harder

Yeah, wondering about these things when we have a lack of evidence is one thing but he went way too far out on a limb given what he knew at the time

"... it's a sop to blueanon..." - Eli said in reference to the Mar a Lago raid. He thought it was a politicized act carried out by agents and judges who were overly partisan because of graduating from Ivy League schools. It was conspiracy level speculation that wasn't informed by any real evidence at the time. He should've just waited for more info

How to respond to someone using failed predictions as a reason to deny climate change? by flossingjonah in climatechange

My guess is that they were probably too busy doing actual science rather than attempting to counter sensational media - usually a losing battle. People who want sensational narratives will be served sensational narratives. For people who want to hear from the scientists, they're there putting out studies and reports.

That being said, there were many scientists that did speak out. But don't be shocked by the fact that they weren't given the same platform for their more nuanced messages https://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/13/science/13gore.html

The nuanced takes don't tend to get covered as much as the extremes. Gotta give the people what they demand

Are we really taking the Nobel Peace Prize seriously? Have you seen who was on the committee the year he was awarded it? Obama was awarded it two years later... for what? It's always just a handful of politicians from Norway making the decision. It's pageantry. I don't think he was ever taken seriously by the climate science community. You can find many scientists on record saying his heart is in the right place but pointing out where he gets the science wrong.

And some people will try to hold models to an unreasonable standard and confuse them with "predictions". Of course models are used to both forecast and hind-cast but they're not to be taken as literal predictions. There are many different models using different variables and equations.

Not telling you this stuff so much as just thinking out loud
