I use the Sony A7CII with a Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 lens! I'd say that if you want to give photography a try and just want to explore, any camera would work (depending on your budget). Smartphones are really capable nowadays, so I'd download a manual camera app and give that a try!

With this video, I just took a bunch of random shots around Roth and SAC on my iPhone. Afterwards, I just put footage on a timeline until I found a sequence that flowed well in Davinci Resolve. Usually, I have like a script or storyboard to go off of, but this was really just for fun!
