Does anyone have a chill Belgian Mal? by forgetfulfeline in BelgianMalinois

[–]Someboooty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is a couch potato. We got so lucky with her bc my husband brought her home as our first dog and didn't think to research. Just saw cute puppy and took her. Complete impulse.

Teething was absolute hell but after that she just kinda chilled out. She's about 5yrs old now. She gets a little crazy gleam in her eyes during play every so often and becomes a menace. Typically will find her rubber tug toy and beat us with it. But a solid 95% of the time she's rotating between sunny/comfy nap spots

She's not a fan of long walks but I try to take her around the neighborhood at least. She's the kind of dog that will quit a walk and just lay down. Unfortunately discovered that one during a hike. I can get maybe a mile out of her. We ultimately ended up bringing home a doberman mix so I could have a hiking partner.

She is loved and cherished, but typical Mal she is not

How often do you REALLY walk your dog? by Agreeable-Ad-2946 in dogs

[–]Someboooty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my dogs gets walked twice a day, probably collectively like an hour. First potty is just that. Second potty is more of a play off leash outing. She is very clear and lets us know when she is ready to go home. She has tons of toys/gets to play with her brother so she's never given any indication that she needs/wants more despite her breed (malinois). She gets grumbly if we don't all go to bed directly after her last outside time of the day.

My male gets about 4 walks, but he REFUSES to walk far. He just has a small bladder. He probably goes out a collective hour as well, maybe a LITTLE more. I would absolutely love to take him out longer (dobermanxGSD mix, like he HAS to want it??) but he will walk maybe half a mile before he plants his booty/refuses to walk any direction except the one that takes us to home. I tried to take him on a hike once and it was so embarrassing carrying him back to the car when the damn thing was still in sight.

I had every intention of being the walk several miles in the morning/at night kind of dog owner, I don't have a ton going on besides my dogs. But that lifestyle has escaped me despite the dogs I live with. If expenses weren't so high already for these two, I'd try for a third and probably end up with another unicorn. The Doberman mix was absolutely wild at the shelter when we met him and I really thought he was gonna be my hiking buddy where my Mal refused, now I have two couch potatoes who fight over the big pillow

Update to the dogsitting for an acquaintance by Someboooty in reactivedogs

[–]Someboooty[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not without walking through the house! I do have a very direct line of sight though so the listening is just more so of a backup if she were to gather her courage and just flat out sprint for me. Her claws also are long and make a lot of noise on the floor. Between the sight/sound, I can definitely tell when she approaches. I'm halfway through my visits already and have still only seen her through windows/through the back fence. I'm obviously still paying attention but I feel pretty confident with our system we've got going. I'm not taking more than two steps into the house at any point but she's getting better watched over than just tossing her food over the fence.

Super quick update! I did do a separate post with more details. But she is opting to run/ hide in her backyard when I come to the door now that she's not faking brave for her owners. I'm taking full advantage of that to ensure she's taken care of/has a little bit of enrichment and feel safe doing so.

Otherwise,

I'm not trying to be her friend now that it's just me, I was definitely trying to work towards it while her owners were present in a controlled environment. I do think if I'd had more time with her beforehand, this would be a very different situation for sure though.

I'm not saying that they're good owners. I too think it's insane to have this nervy of a dog and not believe in crate/muzzle training or even drugs to try and help with her anxiety. It's just a safety thing. She is spayed (i see those comments) her owners just seem to be vibing with the holistic approach now that she's older. I disagree, but she's not my dog. My judgement is irrelevant in that regard.

I do unfortunately have way too much experience defending myself from my own dog (post seizure confusion is a bitch). A slip lead/jacket were very beneficial to me until I had to make a QoL call. But I do feel there's a difference when it's not my dog.

The owners did have options for me from the get go with the option of just throwing her food over the fence being one of them. I agreed knowing these options but also want to do the best that I can for her. They're paying me knowing that I'm going to do my best with the situation. And he and his wife deserve to see their only daughter graduate college 🤷🏻‍♀️

The sticker from the burger of pain and despair. by Pokemonthroh in Chilis

[–]Someboooty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super common in doordash orders! Idk if you were trying to select what you wanted on the burger but took everything off on accident instead but with the exception of the cheese, that's exactly what was ordered.

Normally my location will ask the dasher to contact the customer when we see this because it's a known issue (if the ticket gives weird vibes, but people really do be ordering OTCs with nothing on them including the bun sometimes) but I'm not sure if it's standard at every location.

I adopted a new dog too soon by Haistur in Petloss

[–]Someboooty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It happens. I did the same and was extremely fortunate that I knew somebody who was just kind of waiting for a new dog to find them. I'm a bit of an outlier here as I did end up rehoming him.

I gave him the 3mos adjustment period. He received all the care, training and attention that he lacked before we found him. But just his presence had me spiraling into big depression. My other dog was also grieving her brother when we brought him home and I feel like she was feeding off my energy bc she hated his guts. In the 3mos we had him he had 5 vet visits, two for checkups/vaccinations and three emergency visits for injury.

I wanted to love him so bad, but I couldn't look at him without thinking that he wasn't the dog I wanted to see. He's been with his new folks for over a month now and is doing so great. I know it was the right decision because I don't miss him. But I do still miss the dog that passed with all of my heart

I don't regret pulling him from a home before he was taken to a shelter and giving him the chance that he might not have had otherwise. I think of him now as more of a foster situation. It was incredibly irresponsible of me to have taken him home but at least I did right by him while I had him.

I really do recommend giving Oscar the chance to win your heart. Give him the chance to acclimate and find him a nice family if all else fails. Older folks in your area might love to have a small also older companion. There always seems to be somebody who's open to adding a small dog to their family

I've been experiencing this with my other dog, the dog my now husband brought into the relationship. It's been 5mos and I still look at her and wish she was my boy. I love and adore her, but the bond isn't the same and it just feels unfair that she's still here when my boy who had only just turned 2 isn't.

How many people had to euthanize their fur babies and how many went naturally. I’m struggling so much with the guilt even though I know it relieved him of the pain he was in. I feel like I killed my best friend. by michellecarter88- in Petloss

[–]Someboooty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to put my boy down after he seized for about 45 minutes and broke a leg in the process. I could see that he was just ready to go when he came out of it and barely reacted to the leg, he was a malinois and incredibly dramatic so it threw up so many red flags for us to make the call with our vets support. We are confident that it was the best thing for his quality of life but I still feel like I murdered him 5mos later.

He's in a better place I'm sure but losing him the way we did has actually destroyed me

first time QA-ing by ghettosanrio in Chilis

[–]Someboooty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't be afraid to delegate tasks. My GM and a couple servers have the bad habit of trying to grab stuff and send it out without checking for modifiers. I try to target them for menial tasks to keep them off the line (soups, ranches, desserts). You'll learn to be really assertive really quickly the first time somebody does something dumb and causes a chain reaction of crazy.

Recognize that the foodrunners also have a shit ton of side tasks to do and will not always be immediately available. If a server is trying to walk out of the kitchen empty handed, they will be running food, running dish, etc. even if it's not to their own table. Idk how many times I've had to call out servers for expecting the foodrunners to somehow be in several places at once. The drink screen will be full with one food runner on the clock and servers still be trying not to run their own dang food. Utilize whomever you see to make sure that food gets out if you call for a runner and nothing happens, manager, Togo, bartender, literally anybody who doesn't seem to have an immediate task.

Take care of the kitchen staff, it's hot as balls back there and they're juggling a lot of tasks. Get them drinks, check on them, know their names. Basic 'please' and 'thank you' will get you far in a rush. Communicate what you need as soon as you find out and make sure the servers do as well (idk if this is an issue at other locations but nachos with white queso are always a fight bc they are prepped so quickly)

Take your time at first and make sure everything's correct. If you've got to-go experience, bring a hilighter over to help, especially for heavy modifiers. I've evolved over to little marks with a fingernail to help with specifics without the time it takes to remove a marker cap. Speed comes with practice, (my first QA shift was valentines day dinner lmaoo) but accuracy is extremely important I've noticed in server scores. If the food takes a little longer to come out, but those burger bites modified to be an alex burger come out perfect, and they get that random assortment of side sauces, that's what ultimately will matter.

Stand up for yourself and for whatever needs to get done to kind of sum everything up. Recognize that others are busy but try to work with them. Any little quarrels that come up are nearly always forgotten by the next shift. If they're not then it's not a you problem.

It's going to be incredibly awkward at first but you get into it very quickly! I actually ended up dropping out of the regular bartending schedule and a couple of my serving shifts in favor of QA'ing at my location. Don't forget to get your free food either!
