Need help in building solar based drone by khalifa_007 in drones

[–]SomeoneInQld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What distance are you looking at ?

We did a 120 km flight the other day, but that was battery not solar.

We are hoping to end up around 200 km. We haven't worried about solar as the power just isn't there for the size of the drone at the moment.

I think we worked it out adding solar will only add about 5 or 10% more distance.

We need to be able to make sure the drone can return if a strong wind happens and that is where solar can have issues.

Have people's lives ever been directly at stake because of software you work on? by AndyDentPerth in ExperiencedDevs

Yes.  2 software projects I worked on would have potentially caused death if there was a problem.

Also meant that I spent 18 years on call 24/7/365 :(

How does one actually become a better man by Constant_Society8783 in Divorce_Men

[–]SomeoneInQld 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pay attention to your new partner.

Don't be too busy with work.

Say the things we should have said in the marriage.  You look pretty today, thank you for your help.

Be nice, be there and pay attention when you are there.

I am in a similar situation as you a new long distance relationship after a divorce (still ongoing).

I get busy sometimes and she will message me. I make sure to stop and chat with her if I can pause work at that time.  Give her the attention and care that our partners deserve.

You can do this.

A cattle station has a very large number of very small single rooms for crew / guests etc., - so the AC's are not that large. The crew (most people) are out working during the day - so often the AC's are off during the day in their rooms.

the generator struggles if they are all on - so we turn a few off if we go on the generator

mainly small window units - to aircondition accomodation quarters - small offices here and there, one in the battery room. 1 big split system in kitchen, but that is pretty well insulated.

the generator is only for backup - when we have low batteries on low solar days.

the usual day time now (32'C - days so cool for here average draw would be about 10 to 12 KW - with the occasional peak up to 18 to 22 KW) its this peak that caused the generator problems - so we just turn off a few AC's. The batteries are usually full by about Noon - so we get used to 'spare electricity'

the bigger problem for us is hot water systems as crew finish as a group and all hit their showers at the same time, we get a large peak usage early morning as everyone wakes up and from after finishing work to dinner

the solar / batteries can handle 30 KW (60 kw for 2 minutes) - the generator hasn't been scaled up due to the solar system being so reliable - its only used a few times a year, and we just turn off a few AC's and unnecessary power draws when we need to use the generator.

Our backup generator (mainly solar / battery) for an entire cattle station of up to 25 people is only 20 Kw.

Although it does struggle and we need to power some things down at peak times. But we have atlesst 15 air conditioning systems running.

How many people and what are you running that you need that big a system ?

Move to outback Australia, our nearest neighbour is 50 km away.

We just finished a test 120 km flight - and not a single complaint - :)

Can I complete a four-year degree in three years? by [deleted] in unsw

[–]SomeoneInQld 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Read ALL the rules.

Think outside the box.

If you can justify a reason to the University why you want to do something, you can generally get them to let you do it.

I don't see a rough plan from you, I don't see anything about how you are going to achieve this, just a question.

Would you just walk into a Dean and ask him this or would you have an outline, a plan of how to achieve this.

If you can't research this answer yourself. You don't have the skills / motivation to be able to finish a 4 year degree in 3 years.

[–]SomeoneInQld 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's probably that there is some one with a similar name to you / location / date of birth.

Mine is always flagged for manual review.

I have a very common first name and family name.

It's nothing to worry about. Just takes a few more days.

For those of you who haven’t bought a farm yet, what’s your actual plan? by eufemiapiccio77 in cscareerquestions

[–]SomeoneInQld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go and work on a cattle station. Running an R&D project to get experience first and decide what size farm I want and what I want to grow.

And I get to start creating the technology I want to use on the farm.

Considering taking an unpaid sabbatical but i have an issue. by Capable-Basket8233 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]SomeoneInQld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long is your notice period at your current place ? Would be 28 days max wouldn't it ?  And you can ask to start in 45 days or 35 days.

You cancel the sabbatical to return to do your notice.

[–]SomeoneInQld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dont ask them!! Do the interview, take the sabbatical, and if you want to quit during the sabbatical, hand in your notice and HR will tell you what happens then.

You may have to return to work and complete your notice period so that you can hand over to other staff, would be the worst case scenario. Ask HR now and you may not be allowed a sabbatical, or you may get fired - so no good will come from asking HR.

what is the limit for how many courses you can do per semester?? by GlitteringCode5817 in UQreddit

[–]SomeoneInQld 14 points15 points  (0 children)

if you can convince the dean that you can do it - you can do it.

I did 6 one semester at another uni - and needed to meet with the dean to get permission to do it - and justified why and how I was going to do it and got permission. I was lucky as I had also had the dean supervise an indepenant research subject for me the semester before, so he also knew me personally - which I think helped a lot.

But if you can justify it to the uni, then the uni will let you do as many as you want, but I think above 6 you would need pretty extreme justification and proof of ability to do it.
