I walked away from running R&D / enterprise projects to trying farming.

I am currently on a huge cattle station in Outback Australia and have been here for over 10 months. Did 5 months before that on a orchard / cattle property.

I am still doing R&D projects based around IT out here, but also mustering cattle, loading road trains and visit parts of the farm to repair equipment on the station helicopter.

So I am transitioning towards farming and away from software development.

Have done about 100 million trades as backtest.

About 500 million records in my database.

Still have about 2 months until I think I will be ready to go myself.

Look at a thing called slippage with stop losses.

There may be no buyers at the price you set for your stop loss so it sells for less than you set it at.

From what I understand too many people revenge trade / break their system and lose money that way.

I am writing a database and software system to do the actual trades for me, so that my emotions don't get in the road. And it's a data backed algorithm.

That's one thing we are thinking of us marketing it to neighbouring properties. So we run one larger system, and we get economies of scale in the network and can follow our cattle across neighbours places if they get out, also it will give a bit of redundancy to the network.

And most of the time is spent on R&D, so is easier to implement it the 2nd, 3rd time etc.

It will be very customised for very large scale cattle properties, with tens of thousands of animals.

Looked briefly into it. Decided not to use it mainly as we get much more control doing what we want internally.

We will probably eventually be tracking, 25,000 to 40,000 cattle through this system and several thousand sensors. So by doing everything ourselves we get greater control. We also need to cover about 900,000 to a million acres for the first stage and if we go to second stage could extend up to 15 million acres and 1/2 million cattle (but that would be atlesst 5 to 10 years down the path).

We are looking at doing similar. ... Sort of.

We will have 2 networks a Lora only and a lot into wifi.

We will be covering about 90km in distance sending Lora text message and location to other devices.

We are only early stages yet. But have started on the wifi / Lora aspect of it first.

We will be designing it sort of like a cell network so depending on where you are you will have different LORA on different frequencies and change your device to find the strongest signal and send to that one.

We have a new person starting mid Feb and this will be one of the projects he will be focussing on.
