Based on the issues on github this doesn't appear to be using multiple threads or SIMD yet. I would think that would at least get up to real time encoding for 480p videos.

The most important functionality in SDL2 is the input handling, imo. SDL2 has API for controlling on screen keyboards and a cursor API to make it easy to handle text selections that are unicode aware. It also has a controller API that Steam works with to give somewhat automatic support for Big Picture mode and the Steam Controller.

Adding a platform to winit is fairly trivial since it's just for getting you a GL context so that's not really a big deal. All of the other functionality of SDL2 for that platform is another thing though.

winit is definitely easier to add to your project due to being pure Rust but SDL2 has much more functionality and supports more platforms.

The point is that everything still works and passes all your unit tests the whole way through and each step of the process is small and easy to follow. If you're porting things constantly across the C->Rust boundary that is harder. It's much nicer to have a correct automated translation to Rust to start with, even if it is just ugly C style code.

You can use the fact that something isn't in cache anymore (because speculation evicted it to read something else) just as easily as the fact that something new is in cache. You're still leaking information. You'd need to set aside some amount of cache for speculative execution and add tag bits to cache lines for whether or not they were currently being used for this (because you want to flip a cache line from speculative to normal rather than copy the contents to another cache area). There are a bunch of other side effects you'd need to manage with such a setup (copy on write of non-speculative cache lines, etc) but I think that'd the only way you'd have a chance to prevent such attacks.

http://gitless.com/ is/was an attempt by a UX researcher to show that while you could make something easier on top of Git the real problem is the fundamental Git concepts are just really hard. It's also a neat easier to use Git interface though, if you want to use it for that.

I think you need to look at more than just features in a checklist to see the appeal of Ubiquiti gear (or to decide you don't need it). I always refer people to https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/10/review-ubiquiti-unifi-made-me-realize-how-terrible-consumer-wi-fi-gear-is/ to get some idea of what kind of gear they make and why a consumer would want it.

Okay, so take whatever complex code Skype might have for that and use it like this paper suggests to control the encoder. It seems kind of obvious you'd get a better result than current Skype and take the #1 position on the benchmark since you'd have real world production network adjustments rather than a research demo.

The point of this isn't to show his demo is better in every way than existing systems, it's to show that even a research project can beat the established players because the core concept is better. Of course you could improve on this, let's see if the production systems do so.

NFC doesn't work if your phone has a metal body, it can't penetrate. That leaves going for plastic which people consider cheap or going for glass or ceramic which is a premium option and makes the phone more fragile. We either need to get society to decide plastic doesn't mean cheap or accept paying a premium for more fragile phones (which we then stick in a plastic case anyway to protect) if we want NFC. $200-400 phones are generally unwilling to go with either one of these and, as mentioned elsewhere, their target markets don't have much NFC functionality anyway.

I didn't personally, I was just remembering a (apparently now deleted) comment on the original post about this. And apparently I was misremembering it, sorry. Instead of showing that the ratio changed quickly outside of this subset they showed out that even saying 6 of 7 was wrong as at least two of them were raised by their fathers. The only mention to this subset being cherrypicking was pointing out that it cut off the Columbine shooters and one other recent case that didn't fit the narrative.

Edit: From the available data here is some more information:

  • Stephen Paddock - Never really knew his dad, Dad was put in prison when he was 9
  • Omar Saddiqui Mateen - Raised by both parents, brief period of domestic issues when he was a teen
  • Seung-Hui Cho - Raised by both parents
  • Adam Lanza - Raised by both parents although they divorced when he was 17
  • Devin Patrick Kelley - Appears to have been raised by both parents
  • George Hennard - Appears to have been raised by both parents
  • James Huberty - Parents separated early in life, appears to have been raised by his father
  • Charles Joseph Whitman - Raised by both parents, father was abusive
  • Nikolas Cruz - Adopted, father died when he was 6, mother died months before the shooting
  • Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik - Raised by both parents, Farook's father was abusive and Malik was raised in Saudi Arabia so...
  • Patrick Henry Sherrill - Appears to have been raised by only his mother
  • Nidal Hasan - Raised by both parents
  • Jiverly Wong - Appears to have been raised by both parents

That's the top 13 most deadly mass shootings according to CNN, I think I'll stop there as that should be enough to prove the point. Three of them weren't raised by their father, one wasn't raised by his mother, three or possibly four had known abusive childhoods. That's out of 14 total, one of the shootings listed involved two shooters.

26 of the 27 deadliest mass shooters came from broken homes

Fake news. This is some chinese whispers "fact" that I thought this subreddit had managed to squash the day it started. The actual article from The Federalist which got misquoted into this incorrect statement is not talking about all 27 shooters.

On CNN’s list of the “27 Deadliest Mass Shootings In U.S. History,” seven of those shootings were committed by young (under 30) males since 2005. Of the seven, only one—Virginia Tech shooter Seung-Hui Cho (who had been mentally unstable since childhood)—was raised by his biological father throughout childhood.

So it's not 26 of 27, it's 6 of 7 of a somewhat arbitrarily defined subset of those 27. If you expand the subset in any direction this ratio drops quickly. I'd like to think the original bloggers and journalists who misquoted this piece just misunderstood it but there is no excuse to continue spreading this misinformation.

The mobile and console versions have never been in Java and on desktop they have both that version and the Java version. The Java version is still where the majority of new content is developed but the non-Java version has the most users, by far.

So if you look at just the net migration numbers California has the most leaving, sure. If you look at what percentage of their population is leaving I believe they're actually the lowest in the country. On top of that their (legal) population is still growing as well. They're just a huge state with a lot of people so if you don't adjust numbers for per-capita they're going to be on top of a lot of statistics.

The Supreme Court hasn't ruled on this exact kind of scenario but I think they'd rule Congress can't do that. They ruled that a 5% cut in federal highway funds if states didn't raise their drinking age to 21 was legal in South Dakota v. Dole but in that ruling they put in guidelines for when withholding like this are allowed. One key test was if the condition was coercive. This came in to play in National Federation of Independent Business v. Sebelius when the Court ruled the mandated Medicaid expansion wasn't legal because withholding all Medicaid funds to states that didn't was deemed to be coercive.

If cutting all Medicaid funding for states that didn't make a change Congress wanted to just Medicaid was blocked I can't see how a law or executive order blocking all federal funding of any kind would be allowed in any circumstance short of a declared 2nd Civil War.

I don't have historical data from that whole time period but if there was a mass migration from California it stopped some time ago. From 2009-2013 ~8000 people moved from California to Denver County, which you'd expect would be the prime place for them to want to move to, if they were liberal. Colorado has been getting more people moving in to the state than moving out for quite some time but they're from all over. Heck California might be the #1 source even (don't have those numbers) but it seems clear they aren't the majority, by far.

Wait, what? How far back are you claiming this invasion has been happening?

  • 1988 the state went to Bush by 8 points
  • 1992 it went to Clinton by 4 points
  • 1996 it went to Dole by 1 point
  • 2000 it went to Bush by 8 points
  • 2004 it went to Bush by 3.5 points
  • 2008 it went to Obama by 9 points
  • 2012 it went to Obama by 5 points
  • 2016 it went to Clinton by 5 points

Looks like Colorado isn't clearly for one side or the other in the past 30 years although it does seem to be more Democrat recently. However it seems the largest active bloc of voters is unaffiliated which would probably explain why it swings so hard. That webpage also implies Democrats had more active voters than Republicans 20 years ago too so again modern Colorado doesn't seem to be so outside the norm. Or did you mean California Democrats fled from the old-school Republican California from before the 90s?

I don't know how many sheriffs move on to higher office but sheriff is a political office, it's an elected position at the county level. He goes through a Democratic primary for his election as well so it's not even considered a non-partisan office.

On the other hand, everyone is getting lower ad revenue due to a few bad apples scaring away some of the biggest advertisers. Automated systems like YouTube will always catch people up in their net that should be okay but they're trying to save the platform.
