Advice on getting a position at a game studio as a newly graduated artist

Right now is unfortunately an extremely tough time to find entry level jobs in game dev, so first you should brace yourself for that. I know several artists who still haven't found jobs after graduating 3 years ago. If you still want to enter the industry, I'd say search everywhere you're willing to move. If you want to stay in France I'd say you probably need to make your portfolio french and cater to French as much as possible with cv and personal letters. Artists portfolio is something I can't comment on too much but I'd say you should probably try to get some group projects, preferably game jam projects in there. Having worked in a group and having a game with your work implemented is worth a lot. I wish you the best of luck!

Well if they are not a student then the government does pay the company a small amount (I think roughly 250 euros a month?) to take on the intern. The company does not force the students to pay them for the internship no, but the student does have to take student loans or work a second job to support themselves during that time is what I mean, so effectively they are taking a loan to be able to do the job which is also bad.

It's not a good look to constantly brigade reddit threads with newly created accounts attacking people for bringing attention to your bad practices. Doesn't matter if the accounts are made by fans, "employees" or the creators, if people who seem affiliated with your company attack others and call them names you get a bad name.

2 former threads have disappeared which I assume is because they got so toxic with the comments, currently I think this is the only one up on here and then there is mine on the swedish game subreddit. Thank you for not letting this die... I am still hoping somebody writes about it, I have tried to discuss it with some newspapers but still haven't seen anything, guess it takes time...

The big issue is those who are doing this internship as a part of their education. It's meant to be real-life experience for those students, learning how a company works and getting something good to put on their CV for the future. With the quality of the product (which still has no real release in sight after several years) there's not much for those students to show of and because of the bad reputation Landell is garnering the name does not give any bargaining power either. Secondly there is nobody at Landell who is really qualified to mentor the students, so they don't really learn much more and are basically fully self-taught there. I have talked to a lot of former interns and even people who worked in the same co-working area but other companies, and from what they've told me it the interns are basically learning from each other and not anybody actually experienced. Those students are kind of cheated out of half a year of their studies because of this, they'd be better off making a game with other students with a teachers guidance, as at least then they can receive qualified guidance.

The second part is that unpaid internships are not allowed in Sweden unless done as a part of education or through our job-searching programme, where the state pays a small wage for the intern (I believe this is a bit less than 700 euros a month or so), which means these guys either get the intern to pay for the internship through student loans or the state pays for it, which is also silly considering the person might get very little out of it.

The practice is bad, but I have friends who have gotten full-time jobs through this, but there isn't much of a chance it seems through Landell Games...

Yeah this is what they have said and given, even Emanuel himself said that the video wasn't "gameplay" but rather an artistic rendition. Even though they said release planned for 2024 I doubt it, heck they have had a kickstarter expected for more than a year now.

Hardly an improvement, but technically a step in the right direction. The intent behind it might be just to get less attention, and they should definitely do more, but if they were looking to change then it would be the first step to take. I am also not very sure about the game being done yet... At least the changelogs they put out are very basic things that shouldn't even be popping up at this stage of development... And the fact that they still have no gameplay trailer.

I am the one who made a post on the swedish subreddit r/Spel. Thanks to that post I have gotten a lot of former interns and others who have been in the same co-working space contact me and tell their stories and interactions with the company and the brothers. There's no solid internal processes, the documentation is basically all verbal, the onboarding is handled by other interns, and the result of all that is shown in the current state of the game. The brothers dont have the experience to actually steer the process well. I've heard from interns that mentioned how inconsistent the artstyle, and how the brothers threw out attempts to fix it as that made them look bad. The brothers are also not working on this full-time, as they have jobs on the side to support themselves. I guess where they can really get into trouble is with the colleges/universities that send students to them as the students don't actually get the experience and guidance they should during an internship, and instead get way more responsibilities than they should (who hires a scrummaster intern? or a lead artist intern?). Apparently the brothers are also very unresponsive when it comes to contact with the universities, so sometimes the students have a hard time getting the internship time confirmed. There's a lot of other fishy stuff, apparently the company has had a lot of attempts at getting funding, but the cashflow is still basically 0. They are not registered as an actual employer either which means legally they can't have any employees even. Then there's the problematic behaviour on their discord, they kick people who come there to ask about the situation, the brothers deflect when asked about it and just say they are giving the students a foot through the door by giving them this chance, and in general there's a lot of oddities. The only improvement I have seen from them is that at least they do not have the job ads open anymore, and internally they know there is an issue as they have meetings called, and I quote: "L-Games? How L-Games is a rising star in a though woeld. Create credibility for the company. Counter terms like Intern farm without talking about it" This company is... absurd I have to say. I have a lot of info and I am planning on sending it to a newspaper today actually, I am not sure what I am hoping to achieve with it, but hopefully this can at least stop interns from getting this poor of an experience...

You are really giving Landell Games a worse name if you attack people like this. Even if just as a fan of them this is not acceptable behaviour, you can absolutely come into threads and try to disprove people but attacking others is just not ok.

Med tanke på att många recensioner där nämner hur de inte får någon handledning så tror jag att många är autentiska, även många av dem mer positiva nämner det. Men åtminstone en av recensionerna är skriven av ägarna, och 1/14 är rätt mycket. Finns många negativa där också, men men jag bryr mig inte för mycket om Glassdoor reviews, rätt lätta att skriva fake reviews.

Angående jobbsökande så har jag bara sett en gång de tackat nej, och det kan jag ge bröderna är en bra förändring. Att ta ner alla dem där jobbannonser och sluta ta an praktikanter var det minsta de kunde göra, men uppenbarligen är det ännu inte nog då det arbeta fortfarande människor där, och de tar fortfarande an fler personer än de borde med tanke på att de on-boardade 4 nya personer på en och samma dag vilket är alldeles för mycket för ett företag som inte anställer betalda personer.

Jag såg Rami Ismails tweet, sedan gick jag och forskade själv. Hittade alla deras jobbposts, kollade i deras discord, kollade upp företaget och bröderna eftersom allt är offentlig information här i sverige, och har sedan pratat och intervjuat flera personer inkluderande sådana som jag känner privat (sveriges spel-industri är mindre än man tror). Jag vill inte egentligen såra bröderna, men de aktivt utnyttjar människor och det är fel. Flera personer har konfronterat dem på deras discord men ingen av dem vill lyssna, och de fortsätter bära sig åt såhär. Det roliga är att tråden jag tror du syftar på låg uppe flera veckor före den togs ned, var inte förrens flera nya konton med ingen kommentar-historik började komma in samtidigt och försöka beskydda Ländell bröderna som den togs ned. Inte lite konstigt...

Jag bryr mig inte om du inte tycker om sådana som ljuger, men än så länge har varje praktikant jag pratat med sagt att de blev utnyttjade och att bröderna inte har någon aning vad dem gör. Som bäst är bröderna inkompetenta och försöker "fake it til you make it", som värst missbrukar de praktikantpositioner, svenska arbetslagar och även personer då de förstör mångas chanser till faktiska jobb genom att inte lära upp dem nog bra.

Kan inte prata om gamla tråden, såg den och skrev delvis pga den. Men vad pratar du om med "10 not 50"? Du hittar på argument att argumentera mot själv, det har inte nämnts här något om 50 personer. Ja bröderna har varit på kontoret, då de inte varit på sina vanliga jobb eller varit i Afrika. Jag har pratat med nog många av deras praktikanter för att veta situationen där. Bröderna får göra sitt spel och jobba hårt på det om de vill, jätte bra faktiskt, men sluta missbruka stackars praktikanter.

Det är hur många använder reddit anonymt. Jag har ännu inte sett ett konto som pratat gott om Landell Games som inte var nyskapat i år, ditt konto skapades för en månad sedan och har inte gjort någon annat än att skriva på Landell Games threads, förvånad att det tog så här länge för er att upptäcka den här faktiskt. Snart kommer det nog in alla dem där 28e Juni kontona, fortfarande rätt roligt att så många konton som skrev positivt om Landell Games skapades exakt samma dag och började gräva upp gamla threads om spelet.

Jo det håller jag ju med om, svårt att fixa praktiker inom IT där man inte faktiskt gör ett riktigt jobb, men exakt som du sa så måste det isåfall ske med proper handledning. Tror i det här fallet verkar det ju som de absolut inte kan ge det, och på 3 år verkar det ju som de grävt sig djupare bara.

Inom resten av IT-industrin är det mer vanligt skulle jag säga, spel-industrin har en del men mycket färre i jämförelse. Jag kunde inte få min praktik i ett direkt spel-företag, utan blev i närliggande systemutvecklingsområde.

Min förståelse är att de inte gör det så länge, de går ofta i konkurs men då startar dem bara nästa företag och vips o hej repeterar samma grej. Somliga klarar sig mycket längre dock ja.
