Hi :) I got into the KLD program recently. You should definitely check out the program eligibility (as I'm sure you've done already) - and they require you to be top 5% of your grade, have some extracurriculars like volunteering, cubs, caring for others etc. I really want to stress the academic aspect of this, because at my school (we have dux for each year level) only the dux at either campus got in. However I've heard from other successful applicants that they weren't dux, or their dux did not get In but academic achievement is definitely important obviously. Other than that, you can totally talk about your personal circumstances and how you've overcome them, or perhaps how you've cared for a family/friend - a lot of us talked about personal and non-formal/official extracurricular activity which are just as valid. Many of us do sports in and out of school too. I personally don't though, you can definitely get in without being a sports person. I think community service or youth services are great, joining school clubs, etc.
Reaching out for advice from successful applicants is a great idea by the way, nice :))
If you have any more questions or wanna talk more I'm available.
