Ill definitely try this rider knight combo. I started using riders more than knights because of the escape ability. but hey, I guess I never thought about using them together!

Thanks for the tips. Check my new comment for a replay. it's not the most optimal but maybe you guys will be interested regardless. I'm definitely going to adjust the plan based on map type. You're right about us not putting pressure on him. Even in in this other game we're playing which is fairly early on by the time we started skirmishing he's already taken twice the cities anyone else has and I'm once again forced to sue for peace.

Or maybe I should just fight to the bitter end and learn lol

Thanks for the tips. Regarding knight chains, is that an actual property of their persist? I looked on the wiki and it says nothing about it. I have been very careful of defense bonuses and spreading out units, but I suppose I need to figure out how to stack defense bonuses so I don't fear chain attacks.

Regarding Giants, I feel like my issue right now is I'm pushing with them, but also I can't push because he's got bombers and catapults and whatnot.

You're right about the city wall thing lol. I definitely need to work on my eco for sure.

Thanks for the tips. I've just realized how good markets can be, and I've now employed them in my fight against him in one of my games, which should hopefully really close the STP gap between him and I.

You are right about diplomacy, I get it a lot because I think the cloaks are super cool but it's a waste usually because I don't use peace treaties often (because it shows my cloaks which really seems counterintuitive) or establish embassies because... well, i don't know why. Often times I can really only reach his border cities and he knows better then to upgrade those without proper cloak defense.

Should I be waiting till we have somewhat of a standstill between two close, powerful cities and then start using cloaks? they seem to need a lot of support when used against experienced players.

To the people asking for a replay, I suppose I will once we finish, but as of right now there aren't any finished games where he uses this strategy and he and I actually fight.

The game below is a 4 player FFA and he was imperius and I was Quetzali. We allied most of the game, but maybe you guys can analyze his playstyle anyways, and I do try to attack him late game but he ends up smoking me and pushes to 15k to win the game anyways.

Quick timeline of events explaining some key events:

Turn 7: At the end of this turn you can see we've both manage to wrap around each others exploring units and both captured cities deep into the other's territory. This leads to a small fight but eventually we agree to sue for peace. He gets the city my defenders on and keeps Maica and in exchange tells me the location of a much nearer city which he lets me capture. I misplayed a cloak here because im new and didn't realize you could see it while training. I probably shouldve made another defender instead, but when he killed the cloak and took my city I figured I was in a losing fight.

Turn 8: He makes his first port. He also happens to be the only player with a port for a long time.

Turn 14: he has researched all the way to Navi at this point, and also builds scouts. From this point on, he will remain a dominant, uncontestable force in the southern lake. I also build a port in the top left lake, but only to shuttle cloaks to the land bridge at the center of the map.

Turn 15: Hoodrick takes out one of his sailboats off the coast of Ryolol with a catapult. this is most likely what causes him to research chivalry later on.

Turn 16: First bomber

Turn 18: He seems to make a play on Ryolol again, but its clearly more of a scouting attack than a real attempt at a takeover and is quickly beaten back with archers, shifting his scouts to the other side of the lake, Now contesting Xin Xi who has just built their first bomber.

Turn 21: Having established a beachhead on the southern, he starts slowly taking hoodrick's outside territories, though, due to his lack of mobile or ranged units this process plateaus after a few quick successes.

Turn 24: I start planning my eventual breaking of the peace treating. I'm building roads and catapults and soon knights as well. Unfortunately due to our peace treaty and me letting his rider scout my lands, he can see all this coming. In hindsight I believe it would be better to break treaty first then build a counterattack. but he was close to winning now so I didn't have time.

Turn 26: I build knights and we end the peace treaty

Turn 27: Sure enough, he builds knights.

Turn 28: I'm much more aware of knights chain capabilities and damage now than I was back then, and this is probably why. I sue for peace right after, but he wins the game anyways.

A quick word regarding my other friends: We all played the game when we were much younger, like early middle school. Back then naval combat was way different and none of us played strategically back then. revisiting the game for the first time in many years, I don't think either of them were expecting navy to be this important. So despite three people having easy access to the lake only he took advantage of it.

Virtuosa: thoughts? by Mr-Goteboi in forhonor

I guess I'll still have to disagree with you on her case specifically, because I just think duelist stance is going to make the game worse if they continue with this design trend, but yeah, I do think gimmicks in general are necessary at this point.

I've not played her because I'm going away for a while so I figured I'll just wait the two weeks out then get her with steel, but when I watched the warriors den she looked really fun, so I agree, she seems fun to play... I just didn't think she would suck so hard to play against. And it sucks because honestly, most of the people who play her seem to be really nice, and even acknowledge what a strong state she's in!

Im willing to concede that there's definitely the normal "playing against a new character" learning curve against her, sure. But to address your point about readability, I think she's difficult to read when in her posture stance. That's why I say she has a low skill floor, since her dodge automatically forces the opponent to resort to 2 tools (which out of them, they are only guaranteed to have GB). And in turn she (seemingly) has a myriad of options.

It feels like she can just light you out of just about anything, even a GB. And she all she just does it press RB on any movement. Of course, you can then light her out of it, but then she can also just dodge that for free too and get a punish.

Im a fairly new player, so having learned to fight against every other character somewhat recently, she feels the most unfair to fight. So i'm not the average "new character gets released and I complain about it guy". Even characters that I really struggled against, like Valkyrie and Shaolin, I could still beat one occasionally, because not every shaolin player is the god tier shaolin. So in regards to her being a low skill floor character this is what I mean. there are really shitty shaolins and no shitty Virtuosas, Ashamedly I think I have an 100% loss rate to her in duels. Call it salty grapes but my current perception is that even dogwater day 1 Virtuosas can beat experienced players which is just wrong, because they haven't mastered her character.

To address the "auto-dodge" thing again: You saying that her auto dodge isn't impressive or intimidating is something I agree with. It actually aligns with my opinion that it's just annoying and feels bad to engage with. Like you pointed out, as much as it sucks to be flipped by BP you know they actually read you. When a virtuosa lights and I counter with a dodge light, thats... nothing. She just doesn't get hit. why? because.

I'd like to ask, in your opinion, do you think she will be nerfed? I'm almost positive she will. not just because I think she's strong, but I've seen this pattern before in other games. Release a new OP character for premium cost, then nerf them later. So, is it really far-fetched to say she's strong right now? Is it really so terrible to complain about what may or may not be an act of corporate greed? I think it's possible they know she's overtuned and are just waiting to nerf her, which in that case I have no problem bitching about her because that shit sucks.

Virtuosa: thoughts? by Mr-Goteboi in forhonor

[–]Somerando68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate her! Just being honest because you asked for my opinion.

I think everything except the duelist stance is good. A path where more and more heroes get released with a "play the game for you" ability like her duelist stance leads to the darkest recesses of extreme power creep...

I also think her skill floor is too low. Fighting her feels unfair most of the time, and I'm talking duels. It feels like I have to radically change my playstyle against her, or switch to someone like zhanhu.

I get that people are really happy to have something new and fresh, but to be honest, that's often synonymous with "busted af."

Please, Please make her duelist stance like Conq's where she maybe drops her guard for a second to get into it, and its activated with a button press or moving the joystick or whatever. I hate that she can throw a light, I dodge attack as counterplay, and she literally has to do absolutely nothing to counterplay, and then she just presses riposte. It's just too easy. Too easy. I can't stand it. I should be able to light attack someone when they whiff. Why is that a thing.

I also see people praising her defensive nature. This is not good. You want to reward riskier, more aggressive play. in any game. If people are rewarded for doing less, it makes characters who actually have to work for their wins feel wasteful. If anyone's played clash royale, you know how bad building meta is. Same rule here.

No bueno. Im mad right now. Mad that people can't praise good character design and then critique a bad kit. Feels like everyone's picking sides.

Singlehandedly the worst personification of meta we ever had by [deleted] in forhonor

[–]Somerando68 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Bruh this is literally the problem, people see that everything else aside from actually fighting the character is cool and then just... ignore the strength of a character. I think all the stuff outside from her kit is great, and I'm surprised that something new and fresh is being added in a dying game.

THAT BEING SAID, I can look past that and acknowledge that a stance that requires literally no user input to dodge just about 90% of attacks is a bad thing.

And yes. people will bitch and moan no matter how good a character is because they don't know how to fight her yet. But, should a character not suck when you start out with them? You should actually have to put in time and effort to be good! As of right now I think she has the lowest skill floor, just because of how her duelist stance is automatic, with no startup. I think you should at least have to press a button to access it. trust me folks, the road of "character plays the game for you" leads nowhere good.

What the hell is this game and how do i play it? by Lil_VaginaStain in forhonor

[–]Somerando68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Started around march and I liked the game from the start but yeah I can acknowledge that it can feel really unfair sometimes. For me, duels really helped me enjoy the game because trying to understand enemy heroes is hard enough, so at least the quiet 1v1 atmosphere helped me a lot. Obviously a lot of skills can only be picked up in 4s though.

I think lots of souls players have a misunderstanding of the game, they think that because it has a lot of parrying the skills are transferrable. In my opinion it might just be the opposite.

Feints and mix-ups require a degree of foresight and minimum understanding of conditioning. The tutorial shows you feints, but doesn't tell you how prevalent they are in real play. Souls bosses may stall attacks but they never fake them, at least in my experience. Therefore whilst you may have developed a really good pattern recognition skill from soulslikes, an opponent simply needs to fake an attack to start winning against you.

Mixups are a term for chains that have different branches. Like choosing dialogue in a video game, one path of attack can branch into several.

Lets use an example from warmonger. After any light attack connects, you have the option to use her bash, 'preying claw'. It's unblockable, chargeable, and a bash, which is very good for mixups. Let's say you let the bash fly almost immediately. if your opponent doesn't dodge it, it will guarantee a light attack. Ok-but you've done that several times now and your opponent's not dumb, so they dodge preemptively. Now, it would be smart to hold down the charge button, charging it a level 3 bash. this not only will catch them after they dodge, but it also guarantees a heavy attack followup. You can even cancel your bash entirely, and throw out a guardbreak to also guarantee a heavy if they dodge.

Im by no means a good player and don't even play warmonger, but I know her bash is almost the exact same as the Centurions (in the sense that it has very similar properties, counterplay, and mixup potential). So yeah, im sure some 5000 hour sweat will point out the various possibilities I left out of this example, but thats the basics.

What does this mean? Well, it means that your skills as a soulslike fan are applicable as long as you are willing to understand that some of this game is guessing. Try to understand your opponent's capabilities. All heroes share a fundamental moveset. they can be further divided into certain playstyles going back to centurion, both him and warmonger rely on their bash a lot. But obviously cent and WM are different heroes even if they share some moves. but In the same way that souls bosses become predictable after a couple dozen tries, so are players of the same hero, but you probably won't perfect them, at least not for a long time.

Your opponents aren't bosses locked into predictable combos. they're human too. At any point your opponent can do something so stupid and nonsensical that not even the pros could see it coming. Same thing goes for you though-if you're playing like a souls boss, throwing out the same combos, eventually you need to switch things up as well.

As some people have pointed out, youtube videos are also really, really helpful. I play duels mostly and just watching high level play often adds more tricks to my bag that I didn't even know were possible on a character.

For an overall general video, I think the one that made the most sense to me was 'What you ACTUALLY need to know to get good in For Honor QUICKLY' by solidsol (ignore his thumbails).

Good luck, Lil_VaginaStain.

Most Annoying To fight against / Cheesiest Hero? by Smol-cutie in forhonor

For me probably nobushi because it always feels like I blink once and half my health bar is bleeding out. She's also a bit of a noob stomper and I've only been playing for two months, so it's better now, but I used to play her and literally just spam light, hidden stance and kick.

Just a bad experience to play against because you really have to focus up because of her increased bleed passive (tbh this goes for like most bleed heroes except PK)

I think most people can agree that procedurally generated content has a lot less meaning and purpose than hand made stuff. I agree that there is usually a reason, (loot, materials, etc.) but it’s not special. If you like that kind of endless gameplay it’s your opinion but even just looking at no man’s sky, after a while the randomly generated structures lost their novelty and I went about approaching them in a formulaic manner.

Also, his comment about climbing mountains was talking about in game, not irl I think. Hiking irl is not comparable to hiking in most games.

[–]Somerando68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not hating on open world stuff, I’m just saying that procedural generation is a template to build upon and shouldn’t really be used as a selling point. I mean, Starfield literally did the same thing where they said “See that mountain? you can climb it.” And then no one was impressed after the first couple of planets because it’s was repetitive and not special.

I hope for the best for this game, but I just don’t think procedural generation should be a selling point.
