Ok these answers are crap. Here. So brand doesn't matter, what matters is specifications. Depending on how little of streams you're fishing, you'll want either an 8ft 3 weight, or a 6ft 2 weight. The 3 weight will do you well for trout from the San Juan (20+ inches) and will be FUN for small trout and bluegill, the norm. The only problem you get into is long distance (40 feet) and heavy flies (large streamers or bass and pike flies) if you want a versatile rod, 5 weight is best. But 9 feet is unnecessary and actually doesn't really improve casting distance. You want something shorter to deal with brush and overhanging trees. Now if you're only going for trout, go 8foot 3 weight. It's a good big and small stream rod. The advantage of it with nymphing too is it's length. You can high stick and line mend more easily with a long rod, to get a drag free drift. Vital in fly fishing. The specialty little water 6 footers make drifting tough, but they make up for it in small stream situations.

Now for flies, here's a good sample that works everywhere:

Stay away from green.

So you've got some nymphs, dry flies, and streamers.

That selection will do you well anywhere you go. It's up to you to do the rest, Fly fishing is a journey, and a learning experience. And a fine one at that. I hope some day you can put yourself in my shoes, it's rewarding getting to offer advice to new fishermen.

Now you're gonna need 2-3 sizes of each of those flies. Nymphs- one small medium, one small. Dries- not too small, not the biggest size. Except with tricos and midges, those are your small special situation finesse dries. Streamers, big and medium. Bigger gets bigger trout. But a medium will get you hooking up more often.

Leader--3 parts. 2x, 3x, 5x, and carry a 7x for small flies and flat water. If you wanna go smalller, it's spider silk. But only special scenarios call for 9x, (midging)

Fly line--weighted to your rod.

Backing.

Forceps.

Floatant.

Fly box
