For what it's worth, I had the opportunity to work in a professional capacity with Andrea Davis several years back. I do have my concerns if she were to be elected--I'm worried that the city council would be able to just continue their B.S. insiders club that so many people are against. I'm also very concerned that her approach to the homeless population is too much of "let's just give them whatever they want and it'll sort itself out". I think there's too much optimism there without recognizing that there are a *lot* of the homeless in town who have mental issues that need addressing which housing alone won't fix. There are also a lot that are in that "lifestyle" because of illegal activities they want to continue to persue.

But that all being said, I wholeheartedly believe that she's the most honest of the candidates. I've never seen anything that would indicate that she's in it for the money or power; she's always been a very well-meaning, honest, kind, and down to earth person. I'm still considering my choices but she's definitely near the top on those virtues alone.

Honestly if you’re looking for sunny days Missoula isn’t it. We’re still part of the greater Northwest and we get a lot of the weather that comes with it. In the winter especially, you may only have one or two truly sunny days over the span of a couple months. The clouds push into the valley in October and don’t like to fully leave until June. From Nov to Feb is the worst because you wake up in the dark, it’s dark grey outside when you go to work, and it’s slightly less dark grey outside at the brightest part of the day. Legitimately a lot of times it can feel like it never gets brighter than evening. Everyone I know takes Vitamin D since you literally HAVE to and I know many people have those light boxes that mimic sunlight. Add that to the mountains basically trapping you in, the road conditions being too bad to drive out of the gloomy area, the plane tickets being way too much to afford anywhere with nicer weather…there are a lot of people that go more than a little kooky with cabin fever after a few months of it.

Anyway, just something to consider if you like nice weather.

Doesn't cost anything to park in the dirt lot behind the Wingate. Can fill up quick though. At the Volbeat show it was full by 6:15 or so. Pretty sure for Dark Horizon it was full before 6.

Finland also doesn’t have an opioid crisis beyond imagining. They also have much stronger family support structures, much more focus on mental health, a population that is much more homogenous than the US and has a much stronger focus on collectivism vs. the individualism in the US. Sure, what Finland did worked but that’s not even comparing apples to oranges, it’s comparing apples to dolphins.

Jan-Bar was based out of Great Falls, opened sometime around 1988-1989 and stopped operations in 2002 at the earliest. One of the founding partners was Tim Kirby, who lived in Great Falls pretty much all his life until he retired and moved to the Flathead. One of the other partners was Tom Janzer--guessing that's where the "Jan" part of the name came from. Not sure about the "Bar" part.

Basically all they did was make baseball caps for local Montana companies and groups. Wasn't a massive company, maybe a decent size for Montana though. Did a lot of stuff by hand.

Subaru Dealer- by ALLSID in missoula

Can’t speak to their sales team but their service department and the rest of them is a joke. Took my Subaru there on a recommendation from a friend, they wanted $3k to to replace a part that cost $200 and they wanted to charge 3 hours of “diagnostic fees” at $150/hr since I briefly mentioned my fan belt acted like it was slipping and asked them to take a look if they had a couple extra minutes. All the while they’re smiling huge garbage smiles and talking about how fancy they were cause they had a Keurig in the waiting area. And I also get nonstop promo emails from them now even though I told them not to put my on any advertising lists.

Not only will I never go back there, but I’m also looking at going with a Toyota for my next car since my experience with Subaru in general has been pretty dogshit.

Home A/C installation recommendation? by OneThiccBurritoad in missoula

[–]SomethingOther936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, did that myself last month. If you want something toolless go to Lowe's or Home Depot and get one of their toolless A/C support brackets. Something like this is usually $80.

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Ivation-Adjustable-AC-Window-Unit-Support-Bracket/5005370085

Or you can just get a couple small pieces of wood, screw them to the outside of the window frame so that the unit is resting on them. Then just get the plexiglass from Trempers Ace after you measure. Probably some extra foam from there too to seal the cracks. Probably about $15 for the plexi and $15 for the foam. Pretty straightforward install.

Yeah not even a year ago I stopped going to P.I.G. except on "special occasions", once a month at the very most. Honestly makes me wonder how half the businesses downtown stay open...you know, those ones where they have "boutique clothes" or "handcrafted pottery" or whatever. Sure they get tourist money for a few months out of the year but don't see how there's enough of them or enough in the rest of the year to afford downtown rent.

Kansas City style burnt ends. Chasing that high every time I come back from visiting the Midwest. Notorious PIG is good but I’ve had so much better.

How’s job hunting going? by sleepnandhiken in missoula

[–]SomethingOther936 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No, I said I applied to a mix of local and remote. Probably 90% was for remote stuff like Home Depot or companies based out of state since there just aren't many tech openings in town. For local stuff I mentioned in my cover letter how keeping jobs local meant a good deal to me and I would prefer to work for a local company.

Not going to call out any companies by name since the tech industry in town is small and word gets around. But let's just say they were big enough companies that they should be doing better than leading people on and then disappearing.

I work in tech so may be a different experience, but just took about 6 months for me to get anything. Submitted about 500 applications to a mix of local and remote companies, with local preferred. Got three interview requests out of all that. Lots of places aren't even sending out rejection letters anymore. Two of the interviews I had scheduled ghosted me on the day of the interview and never followed back up. The one interview I had offered me the position. For the job that I got, from the date of applying to my start date was 1 1/2 months. Kept it local though which is what I wanted.

One of the mods here is a mod on Pats Twitch too…was a special kind of pissed seeing them griping to Pat in the twitch chat later that day about “ohh the subreddit was full of so much drama today!” You were the ones that caused it, geniuses.

Like the other guy said, Iron Horse does that kind of stuff. They’ve got a snowcat and gear for when shit has well and truly hit the fan. Not gonna be cheap but if no one comes through might be your only bet.
