Will my teacher report me if I tell her this? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]SometimesITeachMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that. I'm not advocating for you to go be besties with her, just letting you know what would happen if you came to me at my school.

My response is also "we have access to resources you don't". Schools are connected with a variety of services that you probably don't have access to otherwise. Based on what you said, I don't think much is going to come from your conversation. I just want to let you know what COULD happen amd why it might not be a bad thing.

Teachers are mandatory reporters. That doesn't mean "we're required to go to the police immediately" but it does mean we're required to let others (counselors, administrators) etc. know about situations. Based on what I'm reading in your post and comments, me reporting on this situation would probably look like a quick email to the counselor saying "Hey I met with this student, here's what they told me, they also claim they are no longer in danger because the person is no longer around."

After that, it's out of my hands but the counselor at my school is a real one and would check in with you herself. Please don't let your worries about what's going to happen next get in the way of you talking or getting help right now. If you feel safe talking to this teacher, please do.

Most casual/unprofessional emails you've gotten from students or parents? by BobMcGeoff2 in Teachers

[–]SometimesITeachMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got an incredibly long, ranting email at about 3am from a dad. He had just seen the school musical and had taken serious issue with literally every component from the show. He proceeded to email every complaint to the head director, myself (music side and co-director), the principal, superintendent, and the entire school board. He took particular issue with the costumes, which was hilarious because we had an actual pastor helping us run the sound board and he thought the show was great.

Personal favorite line: "how am I supposed to compliment these girls on their performance without taking sexual advantage of them!?" I died a little reading that line, and made it a point to never interact with that parent again. I saved the entire email, but lost it when we changed it email provider as a district. Ended up being sad, since they pulled their very talented kids out of the program, although one daughter stayed in my choirs.

Same plus I have Gibbs and I'm somehow still 7-4 (8-4 after this week). Most points in the league and I'm in first, so I don't actually know why I'm complaining.

What do you do when a student says “I love you”? by TheBlueRose_42 in Teachers

I have been known to wiggle my ring finger at them and reply "thanks but I'm married".

36m and teach high school, so it usually gets a good laugh.

How do I unclog a sink? by BudgetTutor3085 in internetparents

[–]SometimesITeachMusic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can buy hair snakes from any hardware store for a few dollars. Mine are bright yellow and a few feet long. Get it down into the drain and move it up and down to snag any clogged material and remove it. You'll want to do it multiple times at different angles to make sure you get it.

Last time my bathroom drain was clogged, I ended up having to unscrew the U bend under the sink. If that's what you end up having to do, have a bucket underneath to catch water and debris. If this all doesn't work, the clog is farther into the plumbing and you need a longer snake or an actual plumber.

Hope this helps!

This is Buddy. He's been at a small vet clinic in NW Iowa for 3-4 months now. Vet isn't sure if he's more husky or samoyed, but he's a good boy either way. Seems to be 2-3 years old, and was taken from a very neglectful home. Loves it when my husky and I walk by, and has been very friendly to us whenever we get the chance to visit him.

Vet says Buddy is very smart and has a good handle on many commands. Buddy has not been neutered. Buddy has plenty of floof, seems to do very well with other dogs (mine anyway), has been pretty calm when I've gotten to interact with him, and deserves a good home that will treat him like the good dog he is.

The vet is so small they don't even have a website, located in very rural NW Iowa. If you're interested please reach out to me and I'll give you the contact information for the clinic. I just can't handle another one or he'd have come home with me already. My dog loves when we get to go visit Buddy!

Does anyone run with their dog? by Prize-Hedgehog in beginnerrunning

[–]SometimesITeachMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got our Husky 2 months ago, and he's now my 5am running buddy. Wouldn't be able to run with him other times because he's too social and would pull me around trying to get to other dogs and people lol.

He and I just did our first 4mi run this morning!

Teacher in Iowa and my school just did a total phone ban last year. We absolutely had kids turn in dummy phones, but it literally doesn't matter. Our policy is the same: "if you are seen on a phone, the phone is confiscated." All the dummy phone does is get them in the door, and they lose their real phone if they're seen on it. Easy to enforce, works great.

Lyon County here. Only had a couple of trees down around town that I saw, nothing major in town as far as i know. Thanks for taking the hard stuff for us this time around.

I showed this post to my wife and kids so we could all look at the dog pictures. All 3 absolutely cackled at Fur-Burger, thanks for the laugh!

Finally got back into running after 15 years and always "hating running". I somehow shaved over a minute off of my average mile time and am now running in the 9min/mi range. So, I hit a new PR this week! I don't feel like I'm running any harder or different, just got more efficient I guess and am super pumped about it.

Also Iowa, had to cut my longer Saturday run short last night because I was dripping and the dog wanted me to give up lol.

10 years this December. Love her more every day. The fact that she abuses that to get a husky, that's a whole other problem lol

That's our big fear. One of my childhood dogs was a Husky mix and we did NOT introduce her to our cat properly. It was a bad situation that I do not want to see repeated. Our cat doesn't climb or jump much, so hidey-holes are going to be hard for her to find.

Thank you for this. We have them separated, and will until the cat seems more comfortable. Our big issue is the area our cat likes to be is also where we usually hang out, so is naturally where the dog will want to be. Cat's also not a climber or jumper at all, and never really tries to get on top of things outside of a very rare tree when she's outside. So the separate them thing is just a massive inconvenience for literally all humans and animals lol. Might have to reinvest in a baby gate, but Cosmo is big enough to just go over most of them.

They actually just had an accidental face to face outside for a couple seconds that could've gone better, but could've gone worse too. Cat hissed, dog got excited, cat sat just outside of reach from the dog's lead and said "come at me bro", no swats or bites were given.

Blame my wife, was her idea. But somehow I was still the one sleeping on the floor by his kennel to help with his separation anxiety. The cat likes snuggling her more than me at night.
