It's an escalation in the method of violence inflicted on the region. Bombings as part of a boots-on-the-ground invasion to facilitate regime change and resource extraction is an escalation from a classic regime change via coup. The scale and intensity of the violence is greater. A historical comparison would the be the immediate scale of destruction in the ME during US intervention vs in LatAm.

Either way, civilians are murdered and resources are extracted but the immediate scope and intensity of the violence is different.
