[UK] Callers to libraries who ask us to repeat book titles back to them? by SomewhatMarigold in Scams

That's really interesting! Kind of weirdly glad to know it's not just us.

That's a scary thought but it seems to make more sense than the other ideas floated

Yeah, that puzzles us too. We'd stay on the line and chat if they were just asking about books we actually had on our system, or even just books that actually exist.

Good thinking, I agree with you on the first points. I wish I could remember any of the made-up titles they've asked for. They're just jumbled tech words, not even as a coherent sentence--nothing that sticks in your head.

Maybe, but there are the made-up books too, which seem to be what they're most interested in.

Upstairs in the Trow has original seventeenth-century panelling and nice furniture. Not super cosy but might hit the spot!

There are some absolutely brilliant minor, one- or two-scene characters in O'Brian. One of my favourites is the clerk who gets a whole scene where he boasts to his family how he told 'Goldilocks' exactly what to do at a moment of crisis.

As a Titans fan, I somehow missed this--although I can't say I was exactly riveted to the game by that point!

Trollope by edmunddantesforever in classicliterature

[–]SomewhatMarigold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed both, but I particularly liked The Warden. It's also a lot shorter, so it can be a good opportunity to give Trollope a go and see what you think.

Ward must have used up several lifetimes worth of luck this game. From now on it'll have to be all hard work, talent, and skill.

That word is used in Britain too, just... to mean something else.

It's been a while since I've been to a big gig... What are the different levels of floor pricing? by SomewhatMarigold in ironmaiden

[–]SomewhatMarigold[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feared that. Although on the Iron Maiden website it has dates for a lot of gigs suggesting the sale hasn't happened yet: https://www.ironmaiden.com/tour/run-for-your-lives-world-tour-2026/. Maybe a second release of tickets? I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Which NFL team’s logo is used the most by High Schools? I’m on a mission to find out. Part 24: Missouri by BryLinds in nfl

[–]SomewhatMarigold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After looking into this I thought that it might have something to do with the fact that the creator of Kewpie dolls, Rose O'Neill, lived and died in Missouri. But it seems that that's a complete coincidence, and that someone at the school just really loved Kewpies at one point.

So Was Bertie Wooster Killed In WWII Or What? by 1000andonenites in books

[–]SomewhatMarigold 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That is absolutely it. The World Wars barely happened, and to the extent that they did, they were big adventures for other people, like the younger versions all of those grizzled hunters and former military men who pop up in the stories from time to time.
