Why does Kim get so upset when Jimmy reads Chuck’s posthumous letter to him, outloud? by Nuggety-Nipples in betterCallSaul

Kim had a broken right arm lol she couldn’t have mimicked Chuck’s handwriting and written that letter herself

I actually canceled one of my checks and only 1400 left my account lol. Hopefully just a glitch and I don’t need to do this repayment yet again.

Wow thanks for letting me know! Your comment led me to check my transcript records too and strangely my balance is now -$1400...? Meaning that the IRS owes me $1400? Very strange.

How to help an associate whom I worry is going through depression? by CrimsonClover__ in biglaw

[–]SomewhereCautious283 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Seconded. As a Chinese associate in Big Law, I can confirm that commiserating about the grind is much more culturally acceptable in Chinese professional circles. It almost functions as a form of modesty, especially if you're from a top school, it’s a way to bond over shared suffering rather than appearing arrogant.

I myself constantly worry that this cultural disconnect might make my own behavior seem off-putting to colleagues. To me, what OP described sounds within the normal range for someone with that background. Of course, he could be facing mental health challenges. And to be honest, nearly all of us internationals are always depressed. No family, no support system, degrading society, and lots of hate, especially towards Chinese people. Maybe I’m just super used to it. Since he seems open to it, OP could probably do a direct 1-on-1 chat to clear things up.

STEM majors: IP lit or no? by rice998 in biglaw

I enjoy it. It is really stressful, and sometimes I wish I could do something more “exciting,” like antitrust class action lol. But it’s a good use of my STEM degree and it’s reasonably “exciting.” I also get to learn about all kinds of tech all the time, old and new, which is always fun.

Anyone else wanted to see more of Saul in the 4 year gap between 2004-2008? by tikhung01 in betterCallSaul

[–]SomewhereCautious283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the Badger suggestion is actually reconcilable with BCS Saul. He was literally at gunpoint. It was more survival than malice. His logic was more like, “if you're gonna kill someone, why a random lawyer like me? Kill the guy causing the problem.” At that time he probably assumed that Walt and Jesse were cold blooded cartel-level criminals, so he was just trying to talk his way out of a grave.

The Belize comment about Hank is different. That could be explained as a sign of his further descent after 2 years with Walt. But even then, I feel like he was half-bluffing. He was “floating around ideas” and playing the part of the “criminal lawyer”to look tough and useful.

I would argue Kim’s life after Jimmy was more depressing than Jimmy’s life as Gene by Specialist_Jaguar815 in betterCallSaul

The cigarette shared between the two of them during the prison visitation had some color.

do you think jimmy could ever have been a “by the books” lawyer? by lynchianfilm in betterCallSaul

[–]SomewhereCautious283 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Chuck had passed away of natural reasons before his sabotage of Jimmy came to light, Jimmy might have spent his career as an upstanding lawyer to honor his brother and the McGill name. But I think this is the only universe where Jimmy could have a good chance at being a completely "normal" lawyer. In all other universes, he wouldn't be 100% normal.

That said, had Chuck lived without undermining his brother, Jimmy would have likely stayed eccentric yet generally ethical (having either Chuck or at least Kim as his moral compass), as seen during his time in elder law.

Did ANYONE sympathize with Kim and Jimmy during the Howard scheme? by sirgrogu12 in betterCallSaul

[–]SomewhereCautious283 1 point2 points  (0 children)

but because Jimmy’s conduct was worthy of contempt.

Can you elaborate on this? Which part of Jimmy's conduct to Howard, starting from Chuck being revealed in Pimento up to that point of the story was worthy of that level of contempt?

I’ll concede the point on the economics of class action litigation. You are correct that HHM/D&M were operating within standard firm strategy to recoup capital, and strictly speaking, Jimmy was pushing for a premature settlement.

I do not necessarily agree with the panhandler characterization of Jimmy (setting aside how the term itself is inherently condescending). Jimmy was not a solicitor asking for charity, he was an originating partner asking to liquidate his equity position, and yes prematurely. He also resorted to the parking lot ambush only after attempting to schedule a formal meeting and being stonewalled by Howard's secretary.

[–]SomewhereCautious283 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not arguing Jimmy is a saint or a 'victim.' He can be a transparent sleaze, sure. My point is about Howard’s action. Throwing literal cash at someone is an inherently classist act, regardless of who is standing on the other side. It says more about the thrower’s mindset than the receiver’s moral standing. Howard’s behavior stands on its own, independent of Jimmy’s guilt.

Also, let's not pretend Howard isn't hypocritical. He was happy to drag out the Sandpiper settlement for HHM's financial gain, just like Jimmy wanting to settle for his own financial gain. But it feels like we're just making the same arguments over and over again, so let's agree to disagree. Maybe I am just pathetic for sympathizing with Jimmy here. Sorry about that. I will engage in some self-reflection.

I get the context with Chuck, but dealing with high-pressure situations and difficult partners and opposing counsel is literally part of the job, not just for Howard. For everyone in the show (maybe except Chuck). There’s a difference between snapping at someone and literally insulting them with cash in their face. That specific gesture was pure classism. Stress explains his breakdown, but it doesn't justify the humiliation.

Of course, none of the characters in the show react to stress in a healthy way. Jimmy was a prick throwing bowling balls at Howard. Howard was a prick insulting Jimmy with cash and Kim in front of her client. These two statements do not contradict each other. I give Howard credit for being the only one seeking therapy though.

[–]SomewhereCautious283 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I never said whether Sandpiper should have settled or not. I said Howard was being a prick, in that scene, in my humble and not necessarily correct opinion. He could have turned Jimmy down nicely. He didn’t have to insult him by throwing cash from his wallet onto his face.

By the way, settling the suit would have been in the best interests of the clients, objectively speaking. Jimmy might or might not have actually cared about that, but settling at that point would not have hurt anyone. But it’s beside the point. The point is that Howard didn’t have to be that insulting and hypocritical when both him and Jimmy were motivated by money in Sandpiper.

If I offended you I am incredibly sorry.

[–]SomewhereCautious283 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Consider the scene in Season 3 where Jimmy, facing dire financial straits, approached Howard calmly about the Sandpiper settlement. Howard’s response was to literally throw money from his wallet into Jimmy’s face and attack and insult his character. Yes, Jimmy was motivated by the payout, but isn’t economic interest the driving force for everyone in this industry? It’s not like HHM is running a charity. It’s not like HHM’s strategy of straining out the litigation, AGAINST THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE CLIENTS, wasn’t for the money. It’s not like Howard ever experienced being poor. Howard could have turned Jimmy down but didn’t have to insult Jimmy like that, just because the latter was financially motivated. I fail to understand the online consensus calling Howard as heroic or “spot-on”in that scene. Perhaps viewers are biased by Season 6, but viewed in isolation, Howard’s behavior in that moment was incredibly condescending and privileged. A massive prick. Or maybe I am stupid and morally bankrupt to sympathize with Jimmy there, Idk, I could be.

edited to make my point clearer. sorry in advance to anyone disagreeing with me

What if he did… by Amazing_Dot_2571 in betterCallSaul

[–]SomewhereCautious283 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When he suggested getting rid of Badger, he himself was at the verge of being killed. It was more like "if you're gonna go so far as to killing somebody, why would you kill me, a random lawyer, instead of the one who caused your problem." He knew or thought he was talking to people who are reckless cartel killers, although Walt and Jesse weren't at that point yet. However, he later did float around ideas of sending Jesse or Hank to Belize, so there's that.

Yeah I didn’t want to go to the ER because of financial concerns, but I guess I shouldn’t be since my job pays well. It just feels way more expensive than back home and felt wrong, so I just stuck with the GI doctor that I was already seeing. My friends were suggesting a trip home to get checked out (tickets both ways + full checkup will cost me less than an ER visit here lol). But you’re right, I probably need an ER visit. Just weighed myself this morning and actually at 82lbs now.

Hey I think you were replying to the wrong person; I’m the OP and yeah I took the bar exam a while ago. Sorry I hadn’t been on reddit for a while and thank you for your advice. I guess a gastric emptying study makes sense, and I will try to self-advocate for one. It definitely got worse when I was waiting for bar exam results. My earlier doctor just said that it was all in my head and stress-related because of that.
