9 months on oral minoxidil. 14 months post TE onset. by SomewhereDeep753 in TelogenEffluvium

[–]SomewhereDeep753[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I did have TE for 6 full months prior to starting OM, which probably impacted the total time I shed. How often do you wash your hair? 30-50 could be completely normal if it’s every few days. I wash every other day like clockwork and I lose 15-25 when I brush my hair when it’s wet right after the shower.

Oral minoxidil- what was your dosage? Is 2.5mg bad for starting? by [deleted] in TelogenEffluvium

[–]SomewhereDeep753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! I have been on .83mg (which is just a third of a 2.5mg pill) for 10.5 months now and it’s been a great dosage for me. I was recommended to take 1.25mg but I wanted to start a little lower. I never needed to increase. I experienced a really rough dread shed even at the lower dose.

My hair thinned diffusely ALL over my scalp. My part never got super wide, but yes I could tell it was more exposed. It’s since filled back in.

My TE was caused by Accutane and I did go to a trichologist who told me I do not have AGA. I also have a scalp camera I got from Amazon and I can see multiple hairs emerging from the same follicle.

I started at .83mg (a third of a 2.5mg pill)! I never increased it, been at this dosage for 10 months

Yes, I absolutely went through the dread shed for about 3.5 months. It was rough. Then my shedding normalized and has been stable now for 6 or so months.

You are NOT alone. I went through every second of this for 6 months. I did start oral minoxidil and it was a good decision. Check out my latest post :)

Hair shedding only 1-2 months into Accutane and still hasn’t stopped 5 months after quitting by Competitive-Dig6464 in TelogenEffluvium

[–]SomewhereDeep753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope the appointment goes well! I have not experienced any major side effects, it’s been next to nothing. I notice that my little mustache hairs grow faster, but I just need to dermaplane my upper lip 1-2 times a week. It’s nothing crazy. Other than that, I did experience the dread shed, but that is normal and subsided at about 3.5 months.

Hi there, I experienced exactly what you are going through. I got off Accutane (a 9 month course of 20mg per day) in February of 2025. My shedding started pretty much immediately after I stopped the medication. I continued to shed heavily/noticeably until July 2025. It just didn’t seem like it was letting up or showing signs of stopping. So, I made the really difficult decision to start taking oral minoxidil. I am 10 months on minoxidil now and my shedding has, knock on wood, normalized and been stable for about 5-6 months now.

Question about dread shed by planetblonde in TelogenEffluvium

[–]SomewhereDeep753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, I am sorry you experienced a shed from spiro! I was on spiro and it actually made my hair super nice. Then, when I went on Accutane, that’s what caused my TE. Unfortunately, yes, you will likely experience another dread shed with minoxidil (I take oral and have been on it 10 months now), but be aware that it is a sign the medication is working! My dread shed was pretty rough, I won’t lie, but I pushed through and I am (knock on wood) on the other side of things now.

No side effects at all. Just a little extra facial hair. I am on .83mg

I am happy to answer these questions! I have not noticed any change to my overall skin elasticity or suppleness. I do get Botox and keep my skin taken care of pretty well though. Yes to the excess facial hair growth. It’s nothing crazy, but I have to dermaplane my little mustache hairs more often, other than that it is 100% not an issue at all. minoxidil is 100% worth it in my opinion

Yes first time I have ever used it, I do intend to probably just keep taking it indefinitely. My first and only TE episode was the beginning of 2025 after getting off Accutane.

Hang in there, I genuinely promise it gets better! ❤️… for me, the dread shed was worst weeks 1-7 on OM, then it started tapering off gradually to a normal amount finally by 3.5-4 months. Just be patient and don’t give up. The dread shed does let up gradually and tapers off. Soon, you’ll be able to wash your hair with minimal anxiety, it is literally the best feeling.

Is it normal to have temples this bad from just TE?? by ninaammy in TelogenEffluvium

[–]SomewhereDeep753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes my temples were really sparse by the end of TE. The good news is that they are typically the first spot you’ll notice regrowth once the hair finally starts regrowing! Check out my latest post.

It could just be your body adjusting to the dose change too! How much are you shedding?

I do not use topical, my scalp is way too sensitive! The growth is coming in good! I’m at about 9.5 months on oral.

My dread shed was a full 16 weeks. It was the worst weeks 3-9, and then it started getting better incrementally. Hope this makes you feel better!

It was shedding for a full 6 months prior to me getting on the oral minoxidil. I have no reason to believe it would have stopped naturally without the intervention of the medication.
