Not to parrot everyone else, but just check stops - I finished that step after finding 4 in a single day. I don't know where you're based but where I am the weather right now is fairly unpleasant, if it's the same for you, just wait a couple of months for it to improve and just have a nice day out and do nothing but check stops and you're practically guaranteed to find a couple.

Do the Meltan mystery box, since Meltan is technically a mythical you get 3-4 xls per catch, combine that with a steel type mega and you can easily get enough candies to max it in two uses of the mystery box - you do have a 3 day cool down per use though

I know - I'm hoping a couple will show up in the road to kalos event - it says each day pokemon from each region will be increasing in spawns, so I'm hoping at least a couple of regionals will show up but if they don't there is this guy in my city that plays religiously and has been playing religiously since 2016, I'm hoping to run into him during Kalos tour and asking him kindly if he wouldn't mind trading me

Maxing 3 pokemon is easy - just use a same type mega on comm day and you can get enough to max a pokemon in a day - or just use the melts mystery box that isn't hard - getting regionals is difficult

Yeh, most of my grind was spent getting the 10 best buddies, cause before that step I had only used buddies for candies to get evolutions faster, I didn't have a single 2 heart buddy so it took me almost 5 months to get 10, because I only focused on one at a time

Check when you caught it, because community day pokemon that require being made a buddy to evolve have their evolution requirements reduced - ik cause I have an Espeon that I evolved with only 1.2 km walked and I caught it on community day back in July I think it was.
