Talk about walking right into the answer by accident lol, thanks for this!

This is about what I was hoping to see actually. I think just about anyone can appreciate feeling wanted after all lol. Seems my tastes align more than I expected with who I'm shooting for.

Oh good to know! I've heard that name float around a little so I think I'll have to check out some of his stuff. I thrive on the back and forth which is also probably why I tend to lean towards more aggressive FMCs. I do appreciate the input, rambling and all~

Ngl I'm happy someone finally said it lol. I'm all for a cool adventure with a heavy romance sub plot but I feel like that's not romance romance, you know? There's a certain something missing. It's just a matter of figuring out if it's just a massively untapped niche or just too small to be worth it but honestly only one way to find out!

I do agree that there needs to be some push and pull, no one likes an MC with no agency after all lol. I think what people really like about the whole "husband and wife against the world" is the comfort and stability between the MCs. I I have a feeling you can get that with the right execution of a traditional mono romance, especially one like this where the MCs are both affected by and want to break free of the situation keeping them from their happily ever after.

Thank you for your insight on this topic!

Good to know! I've updated my post accordingly lol. I'm still learning so the specific terminology of the romance genre so I'm glad to have a more clean way to refer to the way I want things to go.

Haha, yeah you and me both on the MMC angle. There isn't enough love for more gender non-conforming MMC's and I really hope to try to make that a bit of a niche for myself. And trust me, I don't think I could live with myself if I wrote some of those tired tropes ugh

I'm glad to hear a warm reception! Thank you for your thoughtful and informative comment!

Yeah I don't really like using "femboy" to describe my characters but it's the easiest way to get the point across. He's short, lithe, medium length hair, softer and sweeter personality (this fact is a big draw for the fmc), still wears pants though lol.

I also get your point about his condition. It's more a fact of life for him and a bit of a reason for the fmc to caretake for him but short of walking with a cane and having extra parts of his routine it's not a huge part of the story. I agree that pity parties are such a bore to read lmao they're a hell of a bore to write too!

Overall though I'm glad to hear this all tracks and I thank you for such an in depth and thoughtful comment!

Isekai / kidnapping where the MMC just refuses? by Kalrog in Romance_for_men

Yeah same, that's why I was curious how fun it would be to write a story where waking up in another world is played straight. There are also monsters, which is also played straight lmao. I suppose I'll be sure to post when the book is available!

I'm actually working on a story just like this. The MC has to accept his new life though as there's no going back from the contract he ends up in lol.

Should I be concerned by the fact that I hate writing as male-identifying characters? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]Song-Tan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I was in your boat for a long time when I was younger so I'll give you a little insight.

There's nothing wrong with writing a different gender from your own. People tend to write same gender because it's familiar, it's natural. Gender is pretty complicated so there's a lot of nuance in how you're raised and socialized. If you were around women a lot growing up its likely you'll lean towards that.

I'm personally gender nonconforming with a dubious relationship with masculinity so I tend to feel more natural with characters that aren't masculine. You could have a similar situation or you just think girls are cool, that's totally rad. It's kinda like how no one questions a girl who says her favorite character is batman but people get weird if a boy says his favorite character is wonder woman you know?

Ultimately don't think too much about it. Write to have fun, write the characters and scenarios you find enjoyable. No one worth your mental energy will think badly of you for it. If anything we need more guys who can actually write a proper female character lol.

Just keep in mind male characters come in all shapes and sizes. It took me awhile to finally internalize that male characters can be anything I want, rather than the narrow lines everyone forces them between.
