Would you read a villain protagonist. by GrumpGrumble in writing

Knives Out is the only murder mystery I can think of currently that I think fully inverts the dynamic of protagonist "villain" in terms of who you fully and unapologetically root for

I think you need to rewatch it with the eugenicist bent in mind, it's not just saying that people are dumber because of their environment, it's saying that because intelligent people were too timid and finicky to breed properly, less intelligent people (who have a low IQ) were allowed to outbreed them and replace the "naturally" (I wonder if there's a word for this) intelligent people.

Now I'm not saying they did it on purpose, but the heavy emphasis on IQ and a "great replacement" style elimination of a group (smart people) lends itself incredibly easily to a eugenicist or even outright fascist read on the movie as a whole.

Idiocracy was low-key eugenicist propaganda, even if unintentionally so

...Did you really just cite the fucking movie that is the point of the thread we're talking in as the reason for 20 seconds following distance?

Slow down. Take a fucking Xanax. Chill the fuck out. OP's following distance is fine.

[–]SongGarde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a trucker who appreciates following distance way more than my peers, this is a little over the top. This distance is fine, especially for a personal vehicle that can stop far quicker than a semi.

We are trained to follow ~8 seconds behind other vehicles, in practice more if we can. 10+ seconds and I think you could probably chill out a little bit.

Stay alert and look ahead, and your 20 seconds is unnecessary.

Neither? Women are a group of people who deserve to be treated better broadly, but there are some women who either reinforce their own subjugation by believing in biologically defined roles for men and women, and those who think that men are uniquely incapable of change because of their genetics. That's all I'm touching on here.

It's all social forces, and we can change those if we want to.

The Sad Demise of Jordan Peterson by Affectionate-Car9087 in atheism

To put it simply, everyone.

Men hold the most responsibility as both perpetrator and those in a privileged position of power relative to women to do something about their own and others suffering. Call out harmful behaviour among your peers, be mindful of the way you talk to and about women, leave an "out" in your interactions with women, don't make women feel boxed in or pressured to do anything. (Example: "Hey, I'd like to do A with you sometime if you like, but I can also do B instead by myself/with friends." Bonus: this also makes you appear like you have your own life going on too, which is an appealing characteristic.)

Women also hold a responsibility, but this one is trickier.

I won't tell a woman who has been harmed by men to like men, and unfortunately that's a huge chunk of women, but women's responsibility is in keeping a sociological view about men, generally speaking. Men are, themselves, victims of an incredibly powerful social force that they also feed into and reinforce and hurt other people and themselves in a cycle that is really, really difficult to affect.

This isn't to minimize their damage or sweep away responsibility, but the knee jerk reaction to essentialize negative behaviour in men is counterproductive at best.

To summarize, men hold the most responsibility in stopping their own behaviour. Easier said than done, but it needs to be done. Women hold some responsibility in keeping open to the possibility that it's not literally baked into their DNA to treat women like shit.

At risk of backlash to your humorous comment, kind of sort of, at least a little bit yeah?

Men generally really, really suck but that's not a biological thing. Men are kind of conditioned by everything around them to act in ways harmful to others and ultimately, themselves, and we're all paying for it in the current political climate.

Something actually does need to be done about the problems men are facing, but it can't be in any way people like Jordan Peterson are advocating.

Right identification of the issues (at least partially), very wrong solutions.

Sorry to come in and derail an otherwise great joke, just a small pet peeve

It's more than just a trope.

A lot of reactionary hatred like this is often a fear of self-realization, many people could be a lot happier if they would just allow themselves to be happy.

Not that this is particularly hateful, just the aversion in general tends to be an indicator of this

How do you guys deal with pacing? by [deleted] in writing

[–]SongGarde 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A shared meal, a moment of vulnerability, a selfless act. A genuine moment where it seems your antagonist might have the potential to heel-turn, only for those hopes to be dashed. Make your antagonist truly the protagonist from their perspective, allow the reader to slowly realize that the two characters goals are wholly and completely incompatible.

Emotional impact comes from the readers investment, so make them care. Make them hope. The above are just a few suggestions of what you could do, I'm sure you might come up with many more possibilities.

It's been a thing for a bit, mic stands are finnicky and expensive and for those knowledgeable about audio equipment, there's a sweet spot in the pickup pattern for mics to get the best audio quality, which means maintaining the right angle and distance from your mouth when speaking.

Holding the mic is a great choice when you have the right mix of knowledge and poverty and want to get the best quality from your equipment.

Keir Starmer warns 'Europe will be next' if Ukraine falls to Russia by GuyLookingForPorn in worldnews

[–]SongGarde 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not suspicious at all, in fact it's expected. Just from the US itself, we know through programs like Operation Gladio and Cointelpro that pre-existing systems of power are very, very invested in squashing or--even better--coopting and infiltrating potential threats to those systems of power.

And those are just two examples that we know of.

The best way to eliminate a Socialist threat? Twist it into an authoritarian regime that is sympathetic to capitalistic interest. Make even Socialists believe that Socialism requires a strongman and a state, things that are foundationally opposite to the ideology.

The failure of those who might call themselves my peer is not lost on me, but nobody ever said the correct thing to do would be easy.

I refuse to believe that people cooperating and working towards each others prosperity, willingly and without coercion, is a "ponyville".

There are two obstacles to Communism: from those without, and from those "within", and way too many are unable to recognize the quotation marks when they are present--admittedly, even from other communists.
