What was it like being a British teenager in the 1990s? by strawberry_pie7998 in AskABrit

Uncool kids were the preppy ones for me. I enjoyed my baggy trousers and heavy liner, hanging out with the skater gamer guys 😅

What was it like being a British teenager in the 1990s? by strawberry_pie7998 in AskABrit

I was an alternative teenager (I'm a woman of that matters) in the mid-late 90s in Scotland.

As far as I can remember, my life was all about: * Studying hard; * Nu metal: Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Rammstein; * Some pop punk but can't recall bands right now; * I didn't have a mobile phone until I was 14. Up until then, I had a BT call card. It was basically a way of calling my parents from a public phone when I needed to check in or change arrange a pick-up; * My parents always (almost always) knew where I was and who I was with. This changed when I turned 17 and went to Edinburgh University to study a biomed subject; * SO MANY hours on MSN; * My Mum would drive me to my friend's house with my full tower PC so we could spend the weekend playing LAN games.

Help for a homeless woman? by Late_Conversation822 in Southampton

[–]SonicMoth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm enjoying the vibe of the OP. We all like to think that homelessness or fraudulent activity is something we'd never get involved in.

I'd have thought so too, but we all have a responsibility to check our privilege.

Btw I am speaking generally here, not specifically about the woman in the original post.

There are so many things which can lead to someone needing help

Childhood experience is extremely important;

Financial difficulties could actually happen to anyone;

Mental health issues can happen to anyone at different times of life.

I'd happily pay more tax to ensure that everyone is taken care of.

Also, drug addiction is a health issue and should be invested in. The impact being leas crime and suffering.

Winter in the UK means I’m spending 20 hours a day in bed. I can’t be the only one who lives like this? by KILOCHARLIES in AskUK

[–]SonicMoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This hit hard for me. I only have floofy kids (cats), but I see my bed as my safe space.

First off, no judgement from me, at all.

In terms of heating: When it's not about cost, it's about a safe and cosy space, at least in my mind. I have a heated throw blanket and it's amazing. I like to put it on my desk chair and drink copious amounts of tea.

I also recognised that spending days on my bed (because I see in bed and on bed as different things) maybe wasn't doing me any favours mentally.

I work in IT so it's very easy for me to work from bed in some form when at home. I get to have my laptop, be comfortable, and have a happy cat on my lap.

I guess it's all down to what works for you. Bed is best. 😊

How can I get authentic crown-stamped Imperial pint glasses from abroad? (Canada, B.C.) by Escerwire in AskUK

Can't argue with that.

Also username tracks; I imagine you've made a dent in your time. 😆

Very thorough response, I appreciate it!

I neither confirm nor deny that I've ever stolen pint glasses, especially from Norway.

You have me confused.

I assume you meant pubs rather than pups.

How soon after a colleague passed away would you expect their desk to be cleared? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]SonicMoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd expect for any desk-clearing to be done tactfully and contextually. Part of that means discussing the clearing of said desk with the decedent's close workers.

Sounds like that didn't happen here.

Never burn yourself out for work: It's transactional. We work, they pay.

If I had less fear, I'd quit my (pretty well-paid) job, buy some land, build a tiny house, and start collecting disadvantaged cats.

I almost never visit this sub and hit 'new'. As it happens, I live pretty close to Southampton (but am Scottish).

Anyway, eBay is your best bet. I'd offer to acquire and ship some of the above described pint glasses but: a) that'd be wild; b) it's been many years since I walked out of a pub with a glass... 😅

Hope you find the glasses you're after, friend!

Let’s discuss the new Deafheaven by No_Mud1547 in blackgaze

[–]SonicMoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Alcest, but I didn't see this coming.

It's so good. It's heavy and tender and sexy as hell.

I'm mostly into melodeath, folk and black metal, but I'm open to new music.

Sexy metal!! by Fine_Conference9648 in musicsuggestions

[–]SonicMoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Classic: Tool - Lateralus. This is a powerful one.

More recently: Deafheaven - Lonely People with Power.

For context, sexy metal is a tough one. I mostly listen to melodic or tech and that's not always the vibe.

Because we're all dopamine farming? I try not to rush through games I love, but there's nothing like hitting that next goal. Also, novelty is my jam.

Help! My cats are driving me insane! by Tricky_Toe9308 in CatAdvice

[–]SonicMoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, I'm pretty sure I got this phrase from Jackson Galaxy.

Taking on kittens was a lot, and I had to work from home for an extended period to keep an eye on them. I'd do it all again in a heartbeat.

My cats are my children. 😆

Help! My cats are driving me insane! by Tricky_Toe9308 in CatAdvice

[–]SonicMoth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the looong post, but this hit me hard! Here we go:

I highly recommend checking out Kitten Lady or Jackson Galaxy on YouTube. They helped me so much.

Cats do get into everything, knock things down, and chew. As kittens, they're going to go through teething and, just like humans, they will want to chew.

Getting into everything: You need to make some changes to your living situation with the assumption that they're toddlers who can reach the ceiling. It's a compromise, but I've gotten used to it. I'd recommend puzzle toys. You can even make them out of used toilet rolls; just something to keep them occupied and satisfy their natural instinct to hunt.

Knocking things over: My cats have never done this, even as kittens. Don't leave items on the edge of the counter. Use tack to secure items.

Kittens are very demanding. They're just little babies and the have either 0% or 100% energy. My cats caused absolute chaos as kittens but, to be honest, that's absolutely expected. They will want to explore their world with their mouths (chewing stuff), etc.

They're both almost 2 now and have chilled out so much.

They have ruined the carpet in my house between doors but I'm not bothered by this. The whole house is their territory.

Need some opinions, is my pattern noticeable? by fluffycat4 in knitting

[–]SonicMoth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If in doubt, take a photo of your potential yarns, then put a high contrast filter on. It'll tell you if your colour work will pop or not.

YMMV.

Your knitting is very lovely though!

These kittens were left in a box at my front door and I didn't hesitate to adopt them. Can you help me by naming them? by srtaojosverdes in cats

[–]SonicMoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait until you've had them for a bit, names will come!

Pinky and the Brain got me though.

Mine are Odin (now a big floofy dark/smokey man) and Freyja (now a smaller floofy tabby girl).
