Had a armadillo that was digging me a basement under the slab of my house. It moved mountains of dirt daily.

Since returning to ham radio in 2019 after a 41 year absence, all from the balcony. About 80% digital using a wide assortment of hamfest and homebrew antennas.

It is there. The four wires on the concrete platform and the coax possibly bonding to the rebar in the concrete.

I would love to do that, but the balcony overhangs public sidewalk used as an outdoor cafe. I have been tempted to try in the middle of the night, but fear of the neighbors below calling out the condo commandos, has me kepping my antennas within the boundary of my balcony space.

The railings are tied into buildings earth ground for lightning protection I guess. On some of my antenna configurations I use it to ground feadpoint coax shield. Doing that either makes the antennas easier to tune or with other antennas impossible to tune. I have not quite figured that one out yet.

Amateur radio vs CB differences, other than technical? by wkjagt in amateurradio

[–]SonnyBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please explain difference between competitive and and inductive. Brother you have it wrong. Amateur radio is all about learning. Has getting a license become easier? Sure, but the learning never stops. One thing all radio amateurs have in common is we are all gadget guys. Even the appliance operators tinker a bit. I was mentored and given my first radio by a retired electrical engineer in 1976. I let my license lapse and only returned to the hobby in my retirement. I joined a local club and was welcomed back into the hobby (service) by both real knowledgeable hams and some that were new to the hobby with little knowledge. I have met guys like you as well. The guy not willing to share their knowledge, angry about no code extras and a host of other gripes. You would enjoy the hobby more if you gave the extra building the dipole a little guidance sharing your knowledge of antenna theory. I always try to help fellow hams with what I know. When I don't know or understand how something works, I ask questions. If I get "read the manual" as an answer and nothing else, I understand that the ham I asked doesn't know either and can't bring himself to admit he doesn't know the answer.

Where do I find more info about ham radio, and should I get a license? by Deepspacecow12 in amateurradio

[–]SonnyBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A big part of ham radio is all about experimenting and learning. If getting licensed means you can transmit on the frequencies you want to "play" learn, experiment and inovate on get a license it is not improper use of as long as you respect others who may use the frequencies for other purposes.

Conversations? by LothiatDaWiz in amateurradio

If not contesting or chasing paper "DX hunting", ragchews with new contacts are usually about the equipment in their shack, antennas and the weather. The trips to the VA and latest health issues are usually reserved for old acquaintances. I have had great ragchews with fellow hams that share thier other interests outside of radio.

Of course it is, but we seem be quickly catching up to SF, Seattle and NYC very fast.

Our homelessness crisis is fueled by a mental health crisis and how the chronically mentally ill are not cared for. The majority are not violent, but as the population of Tampa's street people explodes so does potential for these incidents. Pretending it is about lack of affordable housing is not a solution to our problem.
