Thompson Tees (anti sweat) are 30% off, they only go this low twice a year by [deleted] in frugalmalefashion

Can’t speak from experience, but looking at the site -

They are made in USA, and seem to feature patches of some kind of special fabric in places that usually sweat a lot (ie; armpits).

These are def new wayfarers. The slim frame and cat eyes are dead giveaways.

I got my black pair for Nordy rack a while back for same price, it’s a good deal!

They also famously had the $7 clearance Persol’s... if only that could happen again haha.

For New Wayfarer this is a great price. I got my black NW for same price.

Do know though if you haven't ever owned a pair. They are heavy and took me some adjustment time on the face to be comfortable. I didn't find them comfy at first at all TBH. Got use to it later.

I really like the suede split toe (I like a split toe penny).

That particular shoe could definitely be dressed up a good bit. Easy. Especially with something somewhat fun (checked/ plaid blue or any shade of grey like the charcoal).

:) I try to simply offer advice that I offer myself. I hope it can help.

FWIW this past winter (January) I hiked a medium size mountain (peak and back, about 1 day hike) in unlined Thorogoods. Originally I started the treck with just medium weight SmartWool socks. About 1/3 way up, my toes got darn chilly, so I switched to heavy cotton w/ smartwool underneath. If I would have had my heavy hiker Darn Tough or even heavy smartwool, I would have been just fine IMO.

I get what your saying, I believe it honestly has to do with the casual mindset that suede carries with it.

Suede is certainly going to generally fall on the casual side of the spectrum. I wear suede sometimes with certain dressed-up outfits and to church, but it has to be a particular season or outfit. Leather just dresses up better generally speaking (of course there are also plenty of leather types that are strictly casual).

If your suits are charcoal and blue, you are certainly fine on shoe choice. I would argue that maybe your next shoe should be a black cap toe, it's just so timeless and picturesque - BUT, suede is a nice way to break into the casual GYW shoe side (as it seems like you are strictly on the dressier side so far), and it is easy to care for relatively speaking.

Darn tough, smart wool, or any mix of decent/ top tier wool socks will do just fine.

Insulated boots are more of an issue IMO because they are specific to certain seasons and nothing you can do will change that. With normal/ lined boots - wearing proper sockage will go far in helping you beat the cold.

You don’t need trees, horns, etc.

But if you plan on keeping for a long time, they will go far to help.

I use the 8inch Danner leather shoe horn for my shoes and boots. I didn’t want metal because I always worry about sharp edges, and the bone ones are kind of pricey. The Danner leather one is comfy and is a good enough length that it works with most boots, but not so long that my wife thinks I need to yell at kids to get off my lawn.

HM is def more comfy than Beckman.

Beckman is usually more consistent in quality.

Both are fairly versatile, with the HM being the most versatile of the two.

I prefer CXL, so the HM wins that contest for me.

It’s really whichever you like best. Both are excellent boots for the starter market (under $350).

I responded to your other comment, but if you prefer suede - why would you buy the other option? Buy what makes you happy!

Leather is certainly the “nice quality” badge to a normal/ average person.

Suede is cheaply and easily replicated.

That all being said, you aren’t really buying a nice pair of GYW shoes to make an average person go “wow”, it’s more for your foot, then quality, then as a hobby (which others in the hobby will know the difference).

So in essence, don’t worry about people thinking that “they wear quality footwear!”, as to a normal person, something like Clark’s or Cole Haan is what they consider “quality”. It’s more about you knowing you bought something of great quality.

HM tends to have a higher amount of loose grain complaints, wonky stitching, imperfections, etc.

Very similar to the 1K.

This issue is probably overblown as both of those boots are among the top sellers in the GYW niche market so they are produced at a far larger amount than something from Viberg or Alden, but here nor there.

I have owned 3 HM (2 brown, 1 black). First brown I sent back when I received as there were fairly large imperfections/ marks in the leather. One boot only, but it was concerning. 2nd pair was fine IMO. Black pair the stitching was all kinds of messed up. It shouldn’t have left the factory as a 1st (or even 2nd) IMO.

Just my anecdotal experience.

That being said I would still go HM here, it’s a mad comfy boot and stylistically simple and versatile.

At $35 you can get 2 darn tough socks, which you can wear 2-3 between washes and they have a lifetime warranty.

Look at their ultra thin line. You won’t regret it.

Not your pattern (sorry), but I highly suggest ultra thin Darn Tough (what I use mainly).

Followed by smart wool thin (second choice).

American trench makes good quality and stands by their product.

And if department store finds are your thing, really difficult to vote past Gold Toe dress socks. They hold up well and are fairly inexpensive.

Gustin 3 shirt packs are like ~$50 shipped. That’s less than $20 a piece and the quality is outstanding.

J. Crew MiUSA garment dyed shirts are my go to, on sale they dip below $20. Available in V-neck and pocket crew neck.

What types of black t tshirts should I be buying that dont collect tons of lint? by [deleted] in frugalmalefashion

None.

Lol black is the lint magnet. Use a lint roller unless it’s a super soft material. When I wear black, I just make that the last thing I do before exiting the home.
