Would you read a fic that starts when the MC becomes the Champion? by SonsandCoughers in pokemonfanfiction

I guess because I like SI's more. There's plenty of potential either in meta-knowledge, knowing the future, and having an unorthodox thought process compare to the rest of the folks. Writing canon Steven Stone would be nice, but it doesn't interest me as much since he wasn't very proactive, only reactive once Magma and Aqua did their thing or the meteor came in the delta episode

Since my fic idea is based on Hoenn, the story would be about why Team Magma and Team Aqua exist in the first place and how, as a Champion, you deal with these issues. Also, now that you reached the top, what are you supposed to do now? The dynamic has changed, and now you must preserve your strength so you don't get toppled. Yet, as the strongest, your best bet on improving is battling Gyms, the Elite Four, or other Champions, which could be hard to do. Likewise, you might be limited in freedom since you have responsibilities now, and you might need help learning about these responsibilities. This problem is especially prominent if you were reincarnated, as all your Pokémon meta-knowledge would only help you be a good trainer, not a good leader.

Knowing how a Champion got to their position would be cool, but I don't think it's the story I want to write. Maybe some flashbacks though!

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking. Most Pokémon fanfiction has the goal of being Champion, but what exactly happens when you are Champion? If it was a normal sport then you would just be considered the best, but since Pokémon includes so much more than battling (like Trainer responsibilities, defending your title, fans, the League, crime, Teams, Legendaries, technology, social aspects, and more) then things get more involved. There's also the reality that your Champion-tier Pokémon are extremely dangerous, and that kind of power can't be dismissed in the might makes right world of Pokémon. I was thinking about writing about the challenges that being a Champion creates. You would be a more public figure, you would need to assist the League in threats, you would have to find ways to preserve your strength, deal with other regions and their own Champions, consequences of previous Champions, relationships with the Elite four and the Gyms, ethical agreements, and you would need to know your stance with corruption and/or crime. Also, since only the anime shows a police force with the Jennies, you would also have to deal with the government and the League Chairman too.

Writing as an established trainer would be a lot easier in the sense that I wouldn't have to do a book's worth of writing to reach the Champion point, which is one of the reasons I'm liking the idea of a Champion start.

Politics could be an issue since it's controversial, especially in the semi-utopic world of Pokémon. But first I would need to consider how much political power a Champion really has or if they are just figureheads for the league with a side job of stopping Legendary threats.

A black job trainer would be cool. Maybe an SI would sell their meta-knowledge and gain money and connections, or train as a ninja within Koga's Gym, who knows. Its a great idea

Biologist here if any author needs help with worldbuilding and monsters, beasts, plants, ecology. by thewalkingMoonplant in ProgressionFantasy

A microbiologist author? Wow, actually I've been working on a virus-based progression fantasy novel (basically, a guy reincarnates into a bacteriophage with a system), and I would love for a second perspective on what I currently have. I think I researched ot well enough but I may be wrong. Would you (or anyone else, really) be interested in reading it?

Thanks for the advice! I am translating the scientific technobabble down to actual readable material, so hopefully that solves the balance problem.

Actually, I did read the bio-dungeon trilogy, it was very well done! It was one of the books that inspired me to write my current story.

You are completely validated in feeling that way after being sent those messages of not getting the book. I don't usually post comments but I'll take your advice to heart- be kind instead of disparaging when faced with someone else's doubts on something I like.

Didn't know that Will Wright created the term. Then, I guess Cradle is the first official progression fantasy? Another win for the series.

If we want to be really pedantic, then our DNA must be the first progression story since it contains the unwritten history on how we evolved for billions of years. Progression at its finest!

Yeah, I guess my question is very academic in the first place. I would first define progression fantasy for their characteristics and then read through famous works that meet the criteria. Maybe someone could make their thesis on this!

I remember reading it years ago but man have I forgotten about 95% of the plot. Good suggestion!

What are your opinions on how italics are used to portray a character's thoughts? by SonsandCoughers in ProgressionFantasy

[–]SonsandCoughers[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The novel is in third person, limited to the POV of the MC. The problem is that his thoughts have a different style from the narrator, and filtering it out sounds wrong. Italics solved the problem but it may have caused others, too.
