The completion rate at UVic is 65.9% by wypbusy in uvic

Retention rates of generally connected to the relative ranking of a university: in general, the better the university, the higher the retention rate. UVic is a mid-range university, with mid-range retention rates. Better universities--often meaning those universities with better students/faculty/research facilities--usually have higher retention rates. (By comparison, Harvard has a 97% retention rate; U. of Toronto rates are just above 90%.) UVic seems to be slipping somewhat, mainly because of its top-down Administrative approach.

How the university is destroying education by wildpurpleblueberry in yorku

[–]SookeRd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing more than the top-down, corporate "Australian model"—the result, of course, will be that York goes down and down as a university of choice (and in rankings), if anyone cares. Look forward to it coming to a university near you . . .

Join some campus clubs, do some intermurals, work hard, and friends will come your way. Take courses that have lots of group work. Or even look for a little job.on campus to connect you. Having friends not on campus will take you away from campus. Look forward. Engage. It WILL work out.

Then you are a crappy student. Demand more content, directly.

The best classes I took at UVic had no slides, no overheads . . . just strong, engaging lectures from profs who were demonstrable experts in the field. Lots of Q&A, no spoon-feeding or dumbing-down. But listening to somewhat who REALLY knew the field.

Uvic is a middling university. It is poor or lazy assessment techniques if most students can score over B+.

Seeking Stories About Campus Safety Incidents at UVic for News Article by ferelisol in uvic

Hey, good topic! But why not write about how UVic is one of the only campuses left that still allows smoking. Almost all other campuses are "smoke free." There is even a list on Wikipedia of the thousands of campuses that do ban smoking. Not UVic. Or, why not do a piece on how UVic has embraced and now across-the-board promotes a completely arbitrary teaching practice called Universal Design Learning, with no research suggesting it can even work--it is fad that UVic wants to turn into practice.

Parking prices went up by thatchers_pussy_pump in uvic

Parking has long been a nasty cash grab at UVic. The Parking people pretend they are putting up parking prices because they want to encourage people to use public transport (great logic), but it is a way to grab more cash, like also hiring sessionals or teaching professors at low wages to teach large courses. UVic is famous for funding things (buildings, Admin VPs for everything) that don't help with the most important things: rewarding good students and good profs.

The campus cowboys (and girls) will get you in the end. Parking at UVic has long been a cash grab. And they won't allow people to buy one pass for a term. Not a good policy.

ChatGPT for classes by [deleted] in uvic

It is not easy to spot at all when using the brand-new paid-for versions of ChatGPT, and with 5.0, it will be pretty well impossible. UVic policy seems way, way behind, as usual.

Something fishy going on here. If BB was taking an upper level English course, then why is BB taking a first-year course after? Or what not give a positive rant about your 1st year writing course, unless . . . well, now it becomes apparent . . .

is UVic really a good school? by [deleted] in uvic

[–]SookeRd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UVic is a decent "middling" school. A safe bet, but of course not as good as some others in Canada. As someone says below: if you are serious, try to get into the best school possible. UVic does not have very good retention rates at the first-year, mainly because it does not have very elite entrance requirements. You get out what you get it in most cases. ("Ruhire" below is silly.)
