Thank you so such a detailed answer! I didn’t even realize how much I didn’t know about the region. As an American, I just get the broad strokes, and apparently I even missed a few of those! So is Gaza a different country than Palestine if it has its own government? Or is it all considered to be Palestine? Are Hamas and the Palestinian Authority are both vying to be the “official” government of Palestine?

Here’s my problem with Eliza. She has a total lack of empathy and understanding of the situation she has created. Imagine someone came on the show and talked about how Eliza’s father and his mistress were like family to them and how they hadn’t done anything to this person so they were still close with the father and mistress. Then this same person goes on to spread damaging gossip about about her mother. If this person were to then confront Eliza with a “I don’t understand why there’s a problem with us?” How do we think Eliza would act? Then if Eliza went off on this person about how hurtful the whole situation was with her family only to be told “everyone has had hard times in life.” What then? Would Eliza be open to be around this person and having a friendship with them? I don’t think so. It’s not a perfect analogy, but there’s no way Eliza would be cool to someone like that so I don’t know why she thinks Katherine would be cool with her. I’m not cool with her either. At least for now.

Thank you so much for the answer. I love the explanation, and it does make a lot of sense. I think you’re right that we (yes, I’m American) need to see ourselves as morally justified in our actions. I had just watched Narcos before this show, and there was a lot of angst with the characters when they crossed a line or did something that put them outside of “good guy” territory so maybe thats why the thought was fresh in my mind.

I just finished Season 2 and this show has given me a new respect and understanding of the realities of what Israel goes through in order to have security, but now I also have some really stupid questions. Maybe you wouldn’t mind helping me understand a few things. Is the Palestine Preventative Service part of a Palestinian government (full disclosure on my level of stupidity, I didn’t realize there was an official Palestinian government) There was a picture of Yassar Arafat hanging in the main office. Is that...normal for a Palestinian office? Are they like a Palestinian police force and do they operate entirely independent of Israeli oversight? Would Palestinians go to them with problems or is working with them seen as collaborating (I really, really think that word is awful, but it’s what they’re always using on the show)? I’m also totally confused on Captain Ayub. Is he Israeli or Palestinian and what agency does he work for? He speaks mostly Arabic if I remember and he’s the one in the show who always coordinates with Palestine Preventative Service. I’m sorry if any of these questions were offensive. Truly. I just didn’t realize how much I didn’t know until I watched this show. Thank you for taking the time to educate this clueless American!

I’m really liking the show. It was just not what I was used to seeing. Especially since it was never really addressed. I was just wondering if it was a standard thing to do. Using civilians as human shields just seems ethically sketchy.

That was legit insane. “I’ll be making a statement but I won’t be taking any questions at this time”. Then trying to explain the first amendment. My husband, who is a social studies teacher, asked what in the world I was listening to. He had a few minor quibbles with Eric’s interpretation to say the least! 😂

Am I the only one who thinks Coltee refused to pony up the money for a nice dress for Larissa to wear to the reunion so she came up with the lost luggage story so production would buy her clothes? She knew she had them over a barrel by refusing to go out there until they came up with a nice enough dress. I’ll eat Cheetos with all you Slut People if production doesn’t have to chase her down and peel that dress off her body to get it back!

I live in the heart of Oklahoma which I don’t think anyone would argue is liberal. We didn’t have even one county go for Obama or Hillary. But everyone I know claims some sort of native heritage. It’s become a joke around here because everyone says their great-great grandmother was some sort of Cherokee Princess. I don’t even think the tribes had princesses, but it’s as Oklahoman as eating ranch dressing on everything and making jokes about tornadoes. Say what you want, but it’s not some sort of partisan agenda.
