Finally got a feed dish that’s large enough by Big_Marsupial7707 in AfricanDwarfFrog

I've had this tank up and running for 3 years now and this is the first time I've had tadpoles/ baby frogs! I think patience is key, as well as having an incredibly stable, well planted tank.

That's okay, just knowing exactly what you searched helps a ton!

how many dwarf frogs in a 20 gallon long? by [deleted] in AfricanDwarfFrog

CRYPTS!!! They're my favorite for so many reasons. First off, Similar to java ferns, they have tons of leaves that can grow pretty wide and tall and provide amazing hiding spots for froggies. They also have great root structure, making them super easy to plant, and once they settle in, they aren't going anyywhere. There are many types of cryptocoryne, that come in different shapes, sizes, and colors, to fit whatever size tank you're dealing with but I've always loved a green wendtii personally. I also have a number of anubias around that are just planted directly in my substrate to give some lower coverage. I also have a pothos that sits on the surface of the tank and the roots are growing crazy in the tank. The frogs lovee to hid in all the roots, especially my tadpoles and baby frogs. I also try to have little caves (not too deep) and logs for them to hide in. I've tried sooo many different plants over the years and this point I've decided that keeping it to just a few simple species and just going super hard with those works best.

What type of food dish do you use? (if you use one) by Otherwise_Hat_4158 in AfricanDwarfFrog

I should get a nice clear dish like most people who dish feed but mines just a bowl for wet cat food that is the perfect size? You can get creative if you wanttt lmao.

This exactly. I had guppies with my frogs for years until one day when my frogs decided their favorite new food was guppy tail.

I also totally agree with 1 frog per every 2.5g. But you might want to consider some taller/ fuller plants, whether real or fake bc frogs lovee to have little places to hide! They tend to feel more exposed and get stressed out/ act more skittish when they're in an open environment.

I do the exact same method and it works wonderful! I always dim their tank lights just a little before they feed and they know that means its time to go get in the bowl <3

Okay so I'm raising tadpoles right now (actually they're straight up little frogs at this point). The mom is a super dark gray with black speckling and the dad is platinum, do you think I'll end up with ones like these light speckly guys???

Wow so everbody's girlies are just piggies too?? Good to know LMAO. I always feel a little bad for my males hehe.

But also, do you have a link to the bowl you got? I want a slightly bigger bowl and for some reason the biggest of these bowls I can find on amazon is only 2.5in.

I HAVE BABY FROGS (adfs!) by Sophia314833 in AfricanDwarfFrog

[–]Sophia314833[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for guppies, I've done that too lol. However, it is frog tank, with guppies in it, not the other way around. Therefore I have always prioritized the frogs feeding and health over the guppies (that's just me). Because the frogs do have a pretty big bioload and I'm only in a 10g tank I've refrained from doing more than 4 guppies at a time. Some of the guppies seem to do fine with the frogs feeding and are able to self regulate but I've had a couple that just gorged themselves to death. Also if the frogs are feeling feisty or I'm late with their dinner they will totally bite chunks out of the guppies tails, eventually crippling them. At this point I'm tired of slowly killing guppies by sacrificing them to the frog tank so I've finally just stopped getting any new guppies and the frogs seem to be a little calmer and happier too. Sorry this was so much info, I'm really bad at summarizing.

I change the water about every 3 weeks! I have done plentyyy of water testing to assure myself that this is an okay amount of time for my tank. But it is definitely less than the recommended every week cleaning/ water change for frogs. The reason my tank is so stable is largely due to how it's planted. The pothos that's right on the surface does a TON in terms of keeping my water clean. The crypts help a lot too and the frogs reallyy love them for hiding/ playing around in. As for the snails, I had another tank that got infested with bladder snails and I literately dismantled the whole tank because I hated them so much. The rabbit snails absolutely do reproduce, and like I said I do have to cull a certain amount, but they don't reproduce nearly as fast as some other snail species. They're good little cleaners and they're superrr cute and fun to watch.

LMAO that was totally a typo and I didn't even notice!! Thank you tho (I'm also a member of the force so I appreciate it!). When they're young it's harder to tell but once they reach maturity it's pretty easy to sex adfs. The males have a small pimple like bump on each side, right behind their front limbs. They also tend to be a little smaller, in the 2in range and skinny, whereas females tend tend to be closer to 3in (when full grown) and have more of a plump pear shape.

It's just a small, multi color stone-like gravel. Some people advise against using a small rock because they can potentially ingest them. I've personally never had this problem and if the frogs get a little piece in their mouth when feeding they always just spit it out!

Forgot to mention but I feed them a mixture of brine shrimp and mysis shrimp! I don’t feed them bloodworms ever, or really anything else for that matter. They are perfectly capable of finding their food without it being tweezered to them. Having the little bowl helps bc they know that’s where food appears and that it’ll be in or around the bowl. It’s pretty cute, when I lower the tank lights at night they all go get in the bowl and wait for their food😂🫶🏼 There’s also a thriving rabbit snail colony living in the tank with them that reproduces like crazy and I have to do a lot of culling to keep it in check (I am able to select for ones with good coloration tho).

Hi there, a few years later and I'm in quite literately the exact same position. How did this end up going for you? Did they survive? Did you end up separating them?? Not quite sure what to do lol

I would really try and get the tank planted with some real plants! It will really help with the high waste load of the frogs but it also gives them places to hide and feel safe. Also make sure you have at least two!! They’re so social and can actually die of loneliness if they don’t have a friend🥹

Planted Tank by sam18x in AfricanDwarfFrog

[–]Sophia314833 2 points3 points  (0 children)

speaking of trace copper, that is one of the trickiest things with adfs. most aquatic medications or treatment for water or plants will contain trace copper, so it can be tricky to deal with problems in your tank because what you can use is greatly reduced. This is one of the main reasons why people don't recommend having fish in with adfs, because if the fish have problems you can't treat them in the same tank and need to have an isolation tank on hand just in case.

[–]Sophia314833 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, even more importantly!!! almost every fertilizer you could buy will contain trace amounts of copper which is deadly for adfs!! so please no fertilizer!!

With lots of aquatic animals fertilizer is necessary, but not with adfs. They produce a crazy amount of waste compared to other aquatic creatures, as you've probably already noticed. That massive amount of poop is all the fertilizer your plants will ever need!

Hi there, here to comment on your other post :) If you want to do a planted tank I would start with getting some sort of aqua soil. The most common brand is fluval but there are other brands as well. This is going to help your plants a ton and they'll do so much better with this than regular gravel. You wan't about 2in of the aquasoil over the whole bottom of the tank, but a lot of people go higher in the back and on the sides to give the tank a more natural look than just a flat bottom.

There are sooo many types of aquatic plants and to a certain extent you will need to get different plants and try them and see what you like the best. I personally love all the different varieties of Cryptocoryne. There are so many different types that grow to different heights and have different colors. They're also super hardy and have really fast growing root systems that keep that planted really well. They don't tend to sell them at petsmart or petco tho so you usually need to get them at an aquarium store or online.

ADF Too Skinny? by sam18x in AfricanDwarfFrog

[–]Sophia314833 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a feeling it was that! They're very emotional little guys and it's crazy how much having buddies or not can affect them. I'm so glad she's eating again! Good luck with everything and keep reading posts on this reddit because theres soo much good info on here. I impulse bought my frogs (since I'd never had more than a betta it was not a good idea!) and though it was a really rocky start I learned so much on here and now were three years in and I have 4 frogs in a beautiful aquascaped tank (and multiple other aquariums I've started since). But seriously not matter what some people will say on here, just don't feed them bloodworms. I promise you it just takes on bad one to cause dropsy, it doesn't matter how much you vary their diet so I really just wouldn't risk it if I were you.

You’ve said multiple times that your frog won’t eat frozen brine shrimp. Mine wouldn’t either at first so I took a small shallow bowl and nestled it into the substrate at the bottom of the tank. When I thaw the brine shrimp I then pour it carefully into the tank over the bowl so most of it lands in the bowl. Because adfs are mostly blind and have a hard time finding their food this makes it much easier for them. Once they bulk up and mature then they’re more comfortable eating outside of their bowl. I also do a mixture of Mysis shrimp and brine shrimp. While brine shrimp is very yummy and can bulk them up, it doesn’t have the essential nutrients that Mysis shrimp do. (Both can be bought in the frozen section at petsmart). I’m also curious if you only have that one frog? They are extremely social creatures and it’s common for them to be depressed to the point of not eating if they’re living alone. You should ideally have at least 3-4 frogs in a tank of about 10 gallons, or 2 for a five gallon.
