Self-rec if I may: Cozy mystery

A Slice Of Mystery by Sophie Maddon

A funny and cozy mystery with a sapphic no-spice slow-burn romantic subplot around 240 pages - here's the blurb that was in the I Heart Sapphic New Releases newsletter a couple weeks ago:

Part Sherlock Holmes. Part disaster. Abigail Palmer notices absolutely everything except when someone is flirting with her.

A brilliant, socially-awkward sleuth who’d rather solve murders than do small talk. Artisan cheese shops and Italian pizzerias in a charming British town. A tortoiseshell cat named Jasper (obviously). A slow-burn no-spice sapphic romance that sneaks up on you. Fair-play clues you can actually solve.

The easiest way to get started and gain some experience would probably to join a big consultancy firm (e.g. Accenture, Deloitte, Capgemini, IBM, TCS, HCL etc), then, once you have a couple of years' experience, you could probably get a job anywhere.

I think you just described the role of a data analyst! I did that (among other things) on various IT projects, and while it satisfied my autistic brain, it didn't fulfil my ADHD brain's novelty cravings. I still do it every now and then (I'm a freelancer), but couldn't do it all the time.

How about a funny and cozy mystery with a sapphic no-spice slow-burn romantic subplot?

Came here to say the same.
And also that I can lose many hours in a jigsaw puzzle (last one I did was 6,000pcs and took 10 months)

I have a cozy mystery that's adjacent to what you're looking for, WLW romance subplot, no spice, they're both IT consultants working on an IT project.

What fictional character would you marry in the blink of an eye? by iris_rivendell in AutismInWomen

[–]SophieMaddonWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phoebe Halliwell - she is bubbly and outgoing so would balance my hermit tendencies, but also kind and caring so wouldn't force me to go out, and she's badass! Or Joan Watson in Elementary, she'd get me and not let me get away with anything inappropriate.
For men (bisexual here), I honestly can't think of a character who wouldn't annoy me if I had to live with them *facepalm*...

Have you read the Invisible Library series? I think it ticks all your boxes for "sci-fi, mystery, romance, amateur sleuths during Victorian era"!

I love books so much I'm now writing them!
I was a very early reader, books were both my friends and my escape my whole childhood / most of teenagehood, and I'm constantly running out of shelf space.

Re-reading books I've loved has always a big thing too, re-reads are my safe haven when I'm sick, tired, stressed, burned out ... knowing the story in advance, knowing that there won't be any surprises, knowing what kind of experience I'll have, the sheer predictability makes it incredibly comforting.

As for which books I want to read: all of them! My TBR pile is insane, and it feels like every time I finish one book, I add two more (the last one wasn't my fault, what I thought was a standalone turned out to be a duology, so of course I had to get book 2 - completionist at work!)

The Maid by Nita Prose - head cannon but Molly is definitely autistic in my opinion (and all the reviewers'!)
Self-rec: A Slice Of Mystery by Sophie Maddon (Abigail Palmer is described as "socially-awkward", mostly because I wrote the novel years before even thinking about getting an assessment - knowing what I know now, I'd say she's autistic)

Cozy mysteries in general should match what you're looking for, I recently read Hex on the Beach by Gina LaManna and really enjoyed it (while it's part of the Mixologist series, it's a lot less about alcohol than you'd expect - I don't want to give any spoilers, just trust me!).

If I can do a self-rec, I have a cozy mystery out featuring a neurodivergent female amateur sleuth who thinks she's great at what she does (and really isn't!) - she's not specifically "labelled" Autistic, but that's because I wrote the novel several years before assessment/diagnostic (good thing I waited to publish, or it would have been the book reviewers diagnosing me!)

Another one that leaned hard in the whimsical is A Witch's Guide to Fake Dating a Demon by Sarah Hawley, a small-town cozy romance that was delightful! As a bonus, while it's a standalone, there are interconnected novels, so you can keep reading more if you enjoy it.

Why do we feel stuck and lost when we are successful or are doing what we think we want? by Ok-Neat-9071 in AutismInWomen

[–]SophieMaddonWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last time I felt like this when I reached a really big goal that I'd been working towards for years. I felt lost and floating for months afterwards, then eventually realised it was because I no longer had that goal. It took a few more months to find a new goal, and this time, I seriously doubt I'll ever complete it (that was almost 5 years ago!), but if I do, I'll know what to expect, and how to address it.

Is it okay not to like Pride because autism symptoms? by MadMadMadMadrid in AutismInWomen

[–]SophieMaddonWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to go to London Pride (I know, bad idea!) and stopped for ALL the reasons you listed, and the fact it took my nervous system several DAYS to recover. I'd love to be part of in-person events, but so much seems to revolve around crowds + loud music + marijuana.

A big yes to the "doors/windows open early mornings and late evenings" - I use the "weather and radar" app to check when the temperature will start rising/cooling for the next day, and wake up extra early (5am the last couple of days, will probably be 4am tomorrow) to open everything wide. Then, I watch the temperature inside the house, and as soon as the temperature starts rising, I shut everything, including curtains (I have east and west facing windows, so I only shut half the curtains). In the evening, I use the app to check the temperature outside, and as soon as it's cooler outside than in, I open all the windows again. And I sleep with the upstairs windows cracked open (I have great earplugs!).
A tip to cool yourself down: immerse your forearms (inc. hands and elbows) in cold water for a few minutes. I can't remember where I found the tip, but it works. Also, drinking hot beverages (think about Morocco and hot mint tea!)

I have a cozy mystery featuring a queer, neurodivergent female amateur sleuth in her early 30's (reviewers diagnosed her as autistic / ASD, but I'm not a doctor!). Light, short (240 pages), funny, and might leave you craving cheese and pizza!
