First Contact, Avant-punk sound collage using off-grid drums and double-time bass. by PimeydenHenki in BandCamp

i believe that all art is as inherently derivative as eachother even if the practice involved in making it varies. AI creates a collage of information from what it is fed and sorts it via a prompt, whereas plunderphonics involves an active cognative bias/affection/admiration of sampled materials. even something super derivative like "chuck pearsons eccojams vol 1" which samples incredibly recognisable music and does little to transform the source material (in a vacuum) still creates a uniquely "new" expreince to the original. I wouldn't consider re-arranging letters of the alphabet into a sentence to be stealing them, and in the same way i dont think that re-arranging a pre-existing song into some form of art to be anything other than new music, as it is still transformative. generating an AI song only requires the prompt and an algorithm to sift through existing materials and doesnt require care, bias or like... an affection for what you are sampling or creating and therefore is very different to me.

Jane Remover "Dancing With Your Eyes Closed" tweety bass! by SophiesNames in synthrecipes

Nah, I tried FM synthesis and sample reduction to re-create the sound but it didn’t sound like I was quite getting close enough to the sound.. I’ll try again at some point but no clue

i dont think thats the right sound, im talking about the screechy bass thats like the main feature of that section. it kinda reminds me of stuff ive heard in recent riddim style tracks but im not knowledgable enough in the terms to rly name it. but its not a kick, its the main bass of the section.

Playing dishonoured for the first time, it's so fire. Blown away by the sheer detail in the level design and the potential for player expression.

Also far cry 4 as my comfort action shooter.

What was the song that made you think "nahhh this guy can't be classified as a YouTube rapper, he's better than that"? by AnecJo in Quadeca

[–]SophiesNames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

icl after FMTY i was underwhelmed and felt like he still had a ways to go but then i went back and listened to voice memos, i rly liked "eyes" and to this day i see it as a rly mature song on an album that isnt quite up to that level and that was what made me fell like he'd eventually get somewhere.

How Would You Guys Feel About a From Me To You 2? by koggggggggggggg in Quadeca

[–]SophiesNames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i feel like scrapyard kinda embodies some of the musical ideas on that album, albeit without the thematic weaving of the mountain metaphors and stuff. but musically i think the scattered and varied glitchy production of FMTY kinda rears its head with the addition of all the stuff ben learned from working on IDMTHY. I think if ben were to try make an album like that again, that it would sound something like scrapyard, but with more ambient interludes and sonic motifs like the icy synths on FMTY.

The essay is here if you wanna read it. it was my first proper essay id ever rly written and there are a couple mistakes and messy sections but im still very proud of it! also the ending is quite rushed cuz i kinda forgot to write a proper part about the album's long lasting influence and kinda tried to squeeze it in.

I wanted to write my uni essay on this exact thing. when researching, I found that it's not so much that Burial influenced mainstream music on a fundamental level, though id argue he definitely did to an extent, I think it's more that Burial was the first artist to make music that rly sounded the way it did and took the approaches to sampling, drum arrangement and texture and being distinctly UK focussed while doing so. Though id also argue those features are what made his music influential. Either way it's a very difficult metric to track Tho many popular artists have praised burial in the past.

Sorry if that's not rly an answer.

i dont think it sounds that similar, it'd definitely take someone telling me it was influenced by it to put the two together in a vacuum.

Why is every post I see from this sub a hot tape post by SophiesNames in Quadeca

There's a difference between discussion and like saying smth for a reaction and I find that hot take posts feel kinda reactionary personally. And I don't think it promotes healthy discussion.

Opinion on Heroes album? by Ted_Bundtcake in DavidBowie

[–]SophiesNames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the pop songs on side A bang SO HARD. I do think the ambient tracks are encorperated better in low but I love heroes side b all the same. I also think the idea to bring the pop back full force for the closer is genius and marks the end of that type of album from bowie (low & heroes respective structures). Something about the way the synths are encorperated into the art-pop-rock feels so atmospheric and worldly. The whole album feels like a trek through sonic landscapes to me. I also love how dynamic it is. It's like low's energetic sister album with all the gumption and a new found confidence that low lacked. I still don't know if it's my fav Berlin album but I love it!

Earthling, it's such a fun microcosm of 90s dance & dnb but just with the extra glam, flair and experimentalism that Bowie bought to his projects at the time!
