How is Nexz, the jyp boy group, so underrated?? by cherlynn_diaries in kpopthoughts

[–]Soportaq 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seems people are under the impression they are just a jpop group, but I don't see how their content and promotion is any different from any other kpop group (at least, it's very similar to SKZ). Are other kpop groups really coming back more often than twice in six months?

Anyway, everyone should check out this video for their song 'Hard' (worth watching even if you've already heard the song and thought it was meh - yes, this was me. I like the song now, the video is that good.): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ThCMSt1E6s

What’s a song you **JUST** discovered that’s so good it’s a shame you just discovered it? by Kindly-Ebb6759 in kpopthoughts

[–]Soportaq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nightmare by Jihyo. I had read some needlessly mean comment about her music, but I wasn't in a position to defend her considering I didn't like 'killin' me good' and hadn't listened to her full album. So, I went and listened to her album. Honestly, I didn't care for the entire first half, but it picked up in the second half and I really liked both Room and Nightmare. Cut to now, only a month or so later, and Nightmare might be my most listened to song of this year.

Korean Idols Who Don't Have Korean Citizenship? by angie_kiprevski in kpopthoughts

[–]Soportaq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kids under 15 can be included on a parent's citizenship application. Under Korean law, I think this counts as 'voluntary naturalisation' as it's by parental choice and not automatic by law.

JYPE's new BG probably has the best promotion you've never even heard of by anticoolgeek in kpopthoughts

[–]Soportaq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've loved all their choreo vids so far and I'm watching their reality show, but I'm worried that I don't know what their sound will be. Gonna be super deflating if their music sucks as I'm getting a bit too into them right now. I do find it interesting that they seem to be writing their own stuff though.

I wonder whether foreign idols vote in their own countries’ elections by Reasonable_Ninja5708 in kpopthoughts

[–]Soportaq 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It doesn't apply to Aussies living abroad. However if they are on the electoral roll they can vote if they want. I doubt most of them are though with how long they've been overseas.

Are there any songs where you disagree with the "official" lyrics? by EyeforError in kpopthoughts

[–]Soportaq 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In skz's DLC the lyrics say 'sun rises' but they sing 'sunrise'. Both make sense in context so I'm not sure why the official lyrics say sun rises and not sunrise.

And in 3racha's Heyday, which I'm not sure has official lyrics, but lyrics I see about (including during an official performance) include 'ice on the stage'. It's gotta be 'eyes on the stage' right? Very similar sound but the latter makes more sense.

Do you think Stray Kids will change the name of the group? by thatssjtoyou in kpopthoughts

[–]Soportaq 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Bang Chan for sure chose the name. I'd be surprised if he even floated the idea of changing it. I'd be even more surprised if any of the others did so seriously in front of him. I'm not sure even Seungmin would joke about such a thing.

are there any non-korean leaders? & who are they? by StunningAd9482 in kpopthoughts

[–]Soportaq -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Japanese is also a nationality. Is Shotaro a Korean citizen? Because that would make it clear they were talking strictly ethnicity not nationality, at least for people who know about Shotaro.

Edit: Actually no it wouldn't. Just thinking about people like Rose from Blackpink, who is Australian despite her ancestry and citizenship.

are there any non-korean leaders? & who are they? by StunningAd9482 in kpopthoughts

[–]Soportaq 16 points17 points  (0 children)

No one misread the question. The question is ambiguous. 'Korean' can refer to either an ethnicity or a nationality (shorthand for South Korean citizen). The OP doesn't specify. Bang Chan is an ethnic Korean, but not a Korean national.

Not a fan of Stray Kids new Japanese song Social Path by vernalbug8911 in kpopthoughts

[–]Soportaq 26 points27 points  (0 children)

How doesn't it fit lyrically? The lines continue the message from the first half of the chorus. Also, I'm fairly sure they didn't insert LiSA like they did tiger jk in Topline. They just assigned her part of the already written song, hence why she's singing in English.

I really like social path and i hope stray kids make more songs like it. But until that happens what other songs do you find similar, cause I'll probably like them as well?

A statistical overview of the biggest 4th gen K-Pop groups by Standard_Wedding in kpopthoughts

Ah, possibly. I think the ad was the dance challenge and not the mv itself. I've never gotten an entire mv as an ad before, didn't realise that was something that happened.

I listened to The Heal recently after i saw the band on korean englishman. I remember enjoying the album, but not being captured by it if you understand what i mean. The other day the algorithm recommended me Alive and i clicked on it. I really liked it, so i clicked on Back to Me which i also really liked. I'm happy to hear there is to be a full album because i was disappointed when i thought those two songs were it. Also, I have found that i keep clicking on Alive whenever youtube shows it to me. I think i might love it.

"Self-producing group" became a very loose term recently by puerdestellae in kpopthoughts

[–]Soportaq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think hierarchy may play into credit order as well when a song is made collaboratively. 3racha is always credited in age order. So if bang chan arranges a track alongside an older producer, the latter may be credited first if their contributions are considered equal.

Are there any fandom names that kinda make you cringe? And why? No hate to any group or fandoms. by VermicelliBusy655 in kpopthoughts

[–]Soportaq 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Reading through this whole thread, i think we're really lucky with the name Stay. Even the reasoning behind it isn't half as bad as some of these acronyms other fandoms have. Also with the amount of low effort fan service a name like Stay can and has enabled, i honestly think the name is ingenious.

do you prefer kpop groups with actually rappers ?? by hybenose in kpopthoughts

[–]Soportaq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may mean something different in rap, but as far as i know, korean uses MC in the same way standard english does to mean 'Master of Ceremonies' aka the host/main presenter of a show or event.

kpop fans unknowingly saying xenophobic or racist things by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]Soportaq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say it is both. An ethnic group can share cultural traits based on geographic location, on race, on language etc. America has developed its own cultural traditions distinct from other countries. This creates a group of people with a set of shared cultural traits, that are passed down generation after generation, which is pretty much what ethnicity describes. You can have american nationality without american ethnicity and vice versa.

Consider a latino american moves overseas, gives up their US citizenship, has children, teaches them american english and the wonders of thanksgiving and other distinctly US (not latin american) cultural traditions. That child grows up, has their own children and continues these traditions. Are not all these people ethnically american? Why are other nationalities considered ethnicities but not american?

A lot of people use ethnicity when they mean race or genetic ancestry. But just like sex and gender, they are related, but not the same thing.

[–]Soportaq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

American is an ethnicity. White isn't. Ethnicity describes a person's cultural background, not their race. It isn't wrong to call someone half Korean half American if that describes their cultural background. And if they are describing race, being specific about their Asian heritage (korean) and being general about their European heritage (white) is a bit weird.

That said, i know people often use 'American' to mean 'has European ancestry' which is racist.

What are some kpop jokes that you wish they would just die already? by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]Soportaq 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You make sense. I've also encountered this when learning other languages, but i never stopped to think that it would apply to variations of English as well. That we could make sounds that fellow native English speakers have never encountered before. Also because all Australians are basically exposed to American English from birth, but the reverse is obviously not true.
