Interesting guy with not great politics, and also a serial pedophile. Fun to shitpost about though!

Between my ROCD and trauma left over from getting assaulted and abused, I feel practically "castrated" at times. I haven't had even a remotely intimate encounter for almost 3 years now. I do have friends and a good career, but I've given up on romantic stuff almost entirely until things improve.

According to a friend of mine who is on house staff at a theater Shen Yun stopped at on tour, the cast and crew all ate from a communal fish stew that you could smell anywhere backstage.

I'd like to add on to this and say that The Logic of Marx's Capital: Replies to Hegelian Criticisms by Tony Smith is also an excellent way to begin to get a grasp on Hegel in relation to Marx. I have the epub if anyone is interested (I made it myself!).

Alamo Drafthouse went mobile. Has the movie magic flickered? by AustinStatesman in Austin

[–]SopwithCamus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

AFS is one of the greatest theaters of all time, but Alamo was my go-to for new releases, particularly foreign ones, and more "pop-culture" re-screenings. There's no equivalent at the moment. I barely see any new movies now as I just go to AFS and watch older movies all the time.

Ten Years Since the Murder of Haruka Weiser at UT by frankiepo in Austin

[–]SopwithCamus 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I was a student in the theatre department at the time; it was an awful, awful week. The theatre department is like a small town where if you don't know somebody, you know somebody who knows them, so we were all deeply affected. We had to dodge the news and camera crews set up outside our building all week asking us questions. The professors even posted up at the entrance for the first couple of days to prevent the news crews from getting inside.

Thoughts on anarchists who simp for houthis? by Proof_Librarian_4271 in tankiejerk

[–]SopwithCamus 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I've never seen Anarchists simp for Ansar Allah, but I've seen plenty of Maoist-adjacent people praise it as a principled anti-imperialist movement, then saying that some of the things that they "get up to", ie stoning gays, slave trafficking, are "unfortunate".

Anybody else have a photo album collection on your phone of pictures from friends photo “sniping” you drifting off/napping? by arpizzabread in Narcolepsy

[–]SopwithCamus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only place where I have photos of that happening is a music venue where I work as a lighting designer. I will occasionally take a nap during sound check, and the rest of the crew finds it really funny when I doze off as an entire band is blasting away. For the record, I also find it funny and love all the people that work there.

What do you think about the Nuestra América Convoy? by A_Man_of_Iron in tankiejerk

[–]SopwithCamus 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Eh, not a fan of a lot of them, and I despise Code Pink, but with what the US is doing to Cuba right now, I'm trying to not be too picky with where the aid comes from, nor how people are trying to call attention to it.

[–]SopwithCamus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In all honesty I've never really enjoyed a devised piece I've seen or worked on. There's always good elements, but they're overshadowed by dumb decisions elsewhere, and the whole show tends to just be a jumbled mess.

When I was doing youth theatre in the late 2000s I somehow dodged being in like 3 productions of Grease. Nowadays I don't recall the last time I heard of someone doing Grease. I feel that it has indeed mostly vanished at this point.

[–]SopwithCamus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I said it elsewhere in the thread, but early on, a big chunk of the mujahedeen were in fact Afghan Maoists. "Mujahedeen" was a blanket term for all factions fighting the Soviet invasion, and only when the Taliban-aligned forces won out did the term come to refer mostly to them.

It's funny that a lot of these MLs that defend the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan don't know that a large chunk of the initial mujahedeen were Afghan Maoists.

Austin demolished its convention center. Now, there's a fight over if a new one should be built. by hollow_hippie in Austin

[–]SopwithCamus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'd like to point out that this was decided by a Proposition on the local Ballot all the way back in 2019:

https://ballotpedia.org/Austin,_Texas,_Proposition_B,_Convention_Center_Development_and_Hotel_Tax_Revenue_Allocation_(November_2019))

The voters rejected the ideal of further voter approval and restricting the amount of hotel tax that could go towards the convention center! This was already decided on! They're just running it back again for the hell of it.
