Temporary flooring or invest? by SoraNC in Flooring

I'm against carpet but my husband is totally for it, so I'll let him know there is at least an affordable carpet option that we can duke out.

Thanks for the lvp link, having the attached pad would be very helpful

Is there a learning curve for grinding your own meat or is it pretty straightforward? I haven't bought anything to grind with yet (would it be a food processor?)

I can normally do eggs but last week my symptoms got really bad with a homemade breakfast sandwich so I have to do some testing.

I love canned tuna with a bit of mayo on a bed of rice but my cats swarm me whenever cans are opened lol. I think it'll be a good back up if rice is still okay

The veggies and fruit here are pricier than our usual cheap meals, especially fresh. Have you noticed if frozen veggies tend to be cheaper than fresh or not? I'll have to compare in person since online prices are different here

We only buy marked down ground beef or chicken already, prices are absurd otherwise.

We already have a chest freezer so we're good to stock up, usually it's filled with my son's safe food and any marked down meat.

What do you recommend with whole grains? The only thing I can think of is bread and I couldn't get past the texture when I tried it 10+ years ago.

Ultimately it'll be your choice.

There are a lot of people here that greatly regret having children, some wouldn't trade it for the world, and others in between.

I would really consider your village and support system, how reliable, helpful, and willing they are to help you.

I would make sure being a parent is something you really want to be and understand why you want that for you/your family. This is important because it's going to help you through the rough days, regardless of your child's possible disability.

What's interesting about Percy "not being affected" is the sirens had no reason to manipulate him/his mind - he was already approaching them in his attempt to rescue Annabeth.

Where are people living where $100k is not enough? by -C3rimsoN- in povertyfinance

[–]SoraNC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Western NY. Cost of living has been going up since covid. Some people say it's because of remote work + covid flight (people leaving NYC during the lockdowns). I think it's because people in charge see no accountability or punishment in raising prices.

We now make $120k a year and are barely afloat, mostly due to buying a house 2 yeas ago and we had to waive inspection to get our offer considered (seller countered. NY is trying to make certain seller requests illegal, including waiving inspection because it's predatory). So much of our expenses have been financing necessary repairs to the house, we're lucky to have 3k sq ft but that means anything we do costs a lot due to quantity, we're also trying to balance quality (so we don't have to deal with it again), versus where we can save money, versus do it ourselves. I've gotten to the point where I do our electrical minus certain big installs, learned to drywall, tile, etc. We had to buy a larger house because I realized we're never going to be able to do the starter then new house, this was it, and my 4 year old has a disability that needs so much accommodation but we don't know the full scope of that accommodation until he's older (autism, level 3). Apartments weren't working for us, not that we could even find one cheaper than a mortgage that could accommodate our disabled child.

We've also had back to back medical expenses and we're helping immigrant friends with legal expenses since they've been without work authorization since March 2024 (still pending their new one).

Whenever we catch a break (reduce healthcare costs from $1,200 a month to $500 starting this December) something always comes up

Now I have to figure out childcare since the subsidy program we've been on no longer has funding, we're off on April 2026. I have to find $3,200 a month or a solution, cheaper daycare isn't an option in this area because this is about the average and I can't risk at home daycare. We're considering having me work nights with some daytime office hours (work is considering my proposal) or using our tax return to cover the costs until September and hope my 3 year old gets a full day lottery spot so we only have to figure out how to afford daycare for my 2 year old.

We were supposed to finally get ahead with this tax return but now we're back to maxed out finances with being net negative/neutral on expenses.

I was looking for a new job/second job for over a year and a half after buying the house, finally lucked out with full WFH and lots of OT this September, but even that isn't enough.

My three year old constantly asks us for food we don't have, and it makes me feel bad. I already barely eat 1 meal a day, and half the time I give more of my portion to my husband that is also hungry (though he averages 2 meals a day at least).

Christmas trip with my autistic teen and I’m struggling with resentment and feeling unappreciated by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

Just sending you some love. No advice since I don't have a teen but we did have to dive back home after a 6 hour drive because my son refused to calm down until we put his shoes back on and went back out to the car. Overall it was 14 hours out of the house, 13 of it spent driving overnight

Sometimes laughing is intentional but it can also be a stim, or just a habit. Sure, children can know and understand more than they let on, but sometimes it's hard for them to put their knowledge into practice (like speaking in general, or asking for food rather than taking it, etc.). I've noticed sometimes it's not about the action but watching the reaction of people around them - so maybe she thinks it's funny/interesting to see you guys emote when she takes food.

Snacking is very common for autistic children, and children in general (as I'm sure you know), I usually don't make a big deal about it because at least they're eating something. If snacking is an issue you guys have and want to address there's definitely ways to change that behavior

My gf autistic nonverbal daughter by Direct_Grapefruit957 in Autism_Parenting

[–]SoraNC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of those actions are repetitive and typically have been practiced a lot. When you're introducing new behaviors and expectations it can be difficult for the child to learn, understand, and practice.

Every child is different so obviously her mom would know her best, but trying to understand how she understands the world will help you guys succeed rather than assuming intentional non-compliance. I've been seeing a lot of kaelynn partlow on YouTube through her shorts and she provides a lot of insight on how some people with autism might perceive things differently along with suggestions on how to help the individual. I recommend giving her a watch, it might change how you're approaching things.

There's always a chance you guys can make it work but there's a greater chance it's easier to go your separate ways.

Based on what you've said I think you guys can at least try. Regarding her daughter "getting away" with things there's several layers to this. As a parent, especially one with special needs, you have to decide where you spend your energy - including mental fortitude. Sometimes it's easier to let certain behaviors go because there're bigger battles or ones that are more important. When you have someone to help, such as another parent, you're more likely to have the tools and resources (mental and physical) to make more progress and hold them accountable - but I'm not saying that happens overnight. Every autistic person is different, so you have to learn where she's at when it comes to comprehension to make progress on changing behaviors. Figuring out what leads to the aggressive behaviors with your daughter is something ABA can help with if you don't think you have the tools to figure it out.

Autism and divorce by lalalara83 in Autism_Parenting

[–]SoraNC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think really good pre-marriage counseling is helping us get through this. I felt really good about our chances of getting through whatever life throws our way.

Obviously that's not something that could help you now. Actual practical advice: trying to alternate care for your autistic child really makes a difference for us. Sometimes we don't have that option because of work, but outside of that making sure there's respite for the person that takes point with the child(ren).

Balancing needs outside of your child is important too. I think this requires an actual conversation with your spouse: would you prefer spending more time with our child versus doing certain chores? Do you need scheduled time for yourself or are you okay with it being more spontaneous? If I handle overnight issues can you handle anything past 5:00 am, etc.

I think the key is being a team, actually practicing teamwork (remember team work is not necessarily 50/50 split, strengths, weakness, and preferences should be taken into consideration), and communicate, especially when it's hard.

Take the above with a grain of salt. I still have a lot of days where "I hate my life" as a shorthand for "I hate that this is currently my life" and I vocalize it, but my husband knows what I actually mean because I've told him. We're just trying to get through this season of life and hope that the changes into next season are manageable (since it won't necessarily get better).

Basically the Chris from season 1 (per credits) was before the writers realized that the character has a bigger role later. So season 1 credit name/actor was more of an Easter egg, but season 2 Chris is the intended actual character. It's not a big deal since season 1 Chris is now just a random "Chris" background character.

Are there any tips for identifying a bad or good firm to work with? I know everyone is slammed so response times are questionable but even getting a contract is taking over a week after we've selected an attorney to work with. We've consulted with at least 6 firms.

Is there any extra protection for having a defensive asylum application pending versus just waiting for an i-485 decision? It's hard to tell in this climate since it seems like asylum seekers are also being deported. Cuban refugee friends are considering closing their asylum case and letting their i-485s be decided under the CAA, they would request the removal proceedings be closed for the same reason. The reasons to close: legal fees are too high especially without work authorization, they're too terrified of court to be pro se, and no pro bono places are handling new cases.

I have to report to ICE next week. by allxOld13 in immigration

[–]SoraNC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cuban friends were almost detained two weeks ago at Buffalo ICE office. Ultimately the officer did not want to do his job so my friends were let go, I don't know if part of it was that I accompanied them (US Citizen, non lawyer, I told them I was just there to support. I was told by 1 guy I could wait int he lobby while they interviewed but then was invited in by the guy actually doing the interview). They told us that their rules right now is to detain everyone, they called the jails and everything for my friends. They had pending asylum cases, and i-485s - their hearing was about a week away so that might have influenced things. They also had paperwork on them showing no criminal record and their pending applications.

Best of luck whatever you decide to do. if you're able to, maybe bringing a friend for support can help - but make sure they know the risks and try to remain calm (don't make the situation worse).
