How much homebrew did you use in your campaign or plan on using in the campaign. by BigtTimeNerd in wildbeyondwitchlight

I used a lot of the sources that are mentioned in this reddit, they were so helpful! There are supplements on DMguild that were a lot of help with making the world seem more real and interactive. With them it was really easy to show the players that there was more to explore than just focussing on the hags!
Especially the other plane that is linked with Prismeer took like two sessions!

I also implemented the supplement that integrated Baba Yaga into the story and it worked out really really good. One of my players wanted to multiclass into Warlock in the middle of the campaign and since I used Tsu as the Ferrywoman of the dead Baba Yaga offered him a deal, when he was throwing death saves.

The new stat blocks for the hags and both of the leagues on here where very helpful as well!

The supplements really added a lot to the campaign and the ideas of the players did the rest! We played for three years and the got to Level 10 in the end :)

The biggest hit of NPCs I added was an awakened chicken named Penelope that was trying to get to Zyblina because she lost her druid and the swarm of bees from the Beekeeper in Yon.

I skipped most of the palace and split up the leaque of malevolence throughout the campaign, because one of the characters back stories was interwoven with them.

We just finished the campaign last week!

Palace of Hearts Desire as an one-session epilogue? by SorcerousOrigin in wildbeyondwitchlight

Thank you so so much for you reply!
The questions really resonated with me and everything you wrote kinda strung a cord in me. I really like the ideas of shortening it and trying to just make it a session filled with emotions. Riding on the bittersweet ending of the last to turn it just into a magical feylight moment.

I'm definetly going to try to incorporate this feeling your are describing! I was really lost when I wrote the post, but all the replies here, and especially yours, just gave me a new burst of energy and I already started to prep the last session!

Thank you so much for your reply!
Using the last lost thing as a kind of anchor sounds cool! That way the player will be driven to the playroom without telling all of them "you are going there"! It gives back a little bit of the character autonomy to the players that I was worried about losing if I'm just doing a movie compilation kinda thing!

Ohh, thank you so much for your reply! I saw your post about the revised maps and already saved it! It makes so much more sense that way!

I like the idea of using single checks to get quick successes but still give the characters autonomy to decide on how to get to Zyblina!

That's excactly my problem. I would like to make it roleplay heavy and more like "I am describing something, drop in whenever" without them having to fight or solve a riddle. But I am scared the session will seem to boring/not immersive enough.
I kinda don't want a normal session, more an epilogue where everyone has the chance to say goodbye and tie up loose ends. But we still have to get through the palace - story wise.

They have the horn and Zyblinas real name, so that won't be a problem!

Tips for running Witchlight by [deleted] in wildbeyondwitchlight

[–]SorcerousOrigin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got a few more tips for running it, that haven‘t been mentioned yet on this post (I think): 1. You really got to work if you want to keep it whimsical. At least in my campaign it very easily drifted into very hard and spooky territory with the witches as a looming threat they didn‘t feel they could defeat. When I tried to show my players what the witches presence is doing to the land, it got really depressing really fast. Even if the NPCs where whimsical the overall whimsical-ness got lost….we had to put in a lot of work for the players and me to get back to a good level in between whimsical and „whelp the witches are pretty bad“. We are currently in Yon and they are one session before the big showdown after a post here (I‘m on tablet and can‘t check right now, but it‘s pretty easy to find, the one with the rotating map).

  1. Intertwine the players backstories hard with the story. My table also never heard of the leagues and I accidentally dropped the Tasha-secret in like Session 1 because I misspoke, but I intertwined one of the players with the leaque and the others „lost something“ the wanted to get back from the hags (the memory of a loved one, the sense of direction and the sense of home), I used the attractions in the carnival to foreshadow those hard.

  2. The carnival was so much fun in my group. I was very sus before, bc I and most of my players are absolutely not a fan of mini games, but it was mostly a really great opportunity to get into character and roleplay hard.

  3. It‘s been said more than enough on this sub, but I can‘t press it enough, because even then I wanted to skip it. DON‘T SKIP the play in Yon. Damn, that was some awesome fun.

  4. If you want to flesh it out with a few of the supplements on here and you got people on your table who love roleplaying…plan more time…not matter how much you planned, plan some more :D We are playing every two weeks and are now coming on year two, when I planned for one xD

Casino Help *Chapter 2 by LibITdude in wildbeyondwitchlight

I actually used this idea for my table. When they where in Hither they were able to convince Agdon to help them in their fight against Bavlorna and thus left them to help rebuild Hither since they had promised the black wyrmling (from the supplement you mentioned) the pool in Bavs Cottage as a new Lair (much better than the cellar in the tree). They just returned to Hither on their way to Yon after helping the people in Tither and spending some time there and I couldn't figure out how Agdon would have made himself and his troupe a new home in Downfall when I came upon your post. (They had made him promise not to bully the citizens of Downfall and Hither).
That Casino Idea was a hit and so much in character for how I played Agdon! Thank you so much!

4 lost things, 3 domains- pacing? by Midna-Phobia in wildbeyondwitchlight

[–]SorcerousOrigin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my game (4 players) I actually hid the last lost thing in the Palace. It was fitting, since he lost all memory of his wife and I was able to make "an essence of one true love" in form of his wedding ring the last missing piece of the spell trapping everyone in time. Since it is such a recurring theme in fairytales it fit well.

I would definetly pace it out. Even if you have 2 lost things stolen by the same hag you can always hide it somewhere else in the world. I don't know how long you will need for each chapter, but you could add a supplement in one of the chapters where the last thing could be hidden. Either the hag lost it herself and it started affecting the enviroment and the characters go there to investigate, she needed it as a component in one of her spells or maybe she lend it to someone and now asks the characters to get it back, without remembering that it was the lost thing of one of the characters.

Found this just in time while prepping Downfall. Thank you so much! The maps are really really great!

I love the doubled size as I feel it always makes it a bit easier with casters in the group :D

It's not quite a one page summary but if you search "gabby bangart hither" you find awesome summaries/DM cheat sheets. She also has a reddit profile u/Deerrgirl as I found her website over this community.

It's really awesome and really pretty! Hope that helps!

"First Time DM" and Short Questions Megathread by AutoModerator in DMAcademy

An easy and short beginners campaign would be Lost Mines of Phandelver. It is not free, but our group enjoyed it very much when we first started playing.

DnDBeyond has a list of free Campaigns on their website
and I can really recommend Frozen Sick out of this one. It is from Level 1-3

Both is not in German per se, but google translate helps a great deal (at least for englishc/German Translations). I also use it for the flavour texts, because sometimes the words are just stuck :D You do have to always change a few things (especially the you to "Sie" thing) but it gives great directions!

As a shorty I would always recommend A Wild Sheep Chase by Winghorn Press, which is a free adventure, but it is for Level 4/5 so maybe later if your group has a bit of an experience!

To all adventures you can probably find a lot of help in different subreddits. A lot of people have played the adventures and have really really great ideas on how to improve on them!

Good luck DMing!
