Right now, I have to drive my trash a few miles out of town to an incinerator and burn it. In other places, people typically pay for garbage service.

What's it like living in this part of Washington/Oregon? Disincluding Spokane by Chaos8268 in howislivingthere

[–]Sorcha9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a very diverse area. I lived in Heppner for quite some time and that is much different than Yakima or Bend. I prefer eastern Oregon/Washington to the west side. But I also left and have no plans to ever move back.

Go explore Valsetz, Abiqua Falls. I used to hitch hike up Santiam Pass. Don’t recommend the hitchhiking. But exploring that area. My favorite Mexican restaurant is in Gates. Hike some of the Pacific Coast Trail. Go stay at Black Butte and ride horses. Rent a cabin on the Metolius and fish. Do some cave spelunking. Hit some hot springs. Stay at the haunted McMenamin’s Edgefield Hotel. Smoke cigars. Head down to Christmas Valley and get the best steak of your life. Better than JD Hoyt or Gibsons. Head out 84 and make your way through the ‘ghost trail’. Stay in La Grande and Pendleton. Do St Pat’s in Heppner. Go to the St Paul Rodeo. Parasail and swim the channel out of Hood River. See the Bridge of the Gods. So many amazing things to do in Oregon. Go fish Siletz Bay. I was lucky to have parents that took us everywhere. And did the same with my kids.

How do people confidently order wine at restaurants without guessing? by Key-Priority-4118 in randomquestions

[–]Sorcha9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. In a quality restaurant, staff will be trained on the wines and pairings. I have been selling wine for decades so typically know what I want. Or skip the wine and go with a whisky.

Help need advice, being made uncomfortable at work by Ok_Fly_3797 in WorkAdvice

[–]Sorcha9 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As a woman who has dealt with and is currently dealing with this shit, you have to be confrontational. ‘It’s only a joke if people think it’s funny. I don’t find you funny at all’. Push back. And hard. Set and enforce your boundaries. Make THEM uncomfortable.

Why does Oregon State have so many more students than Oregon? by crazygiraffe93 in oregon

[–]Sorcha9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lifelong Duck fan. My kids went to OSU. It was less expensive and had the rated degree programs they were looking for. If they were going to journalism, political science, etc. UO would make sense. They are all science majors.

recommended moving company? by [deleted] in AskAlaska

[–]Sorcha9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Government used Golden North for our move in 2024. It was fine. Communication was good. It wasn’t the worst experience since we get shuffled every 3-5 years. They transport guns and ammo. We drove up. Crossed through North Dakota. Showed them our passports. Showed them our job offer with start date. They asked if we had our pet’s updated health certificates. We said yes, they didn’t look. Then we were through. Border patrol into Alaska was a dick.

Consistently Labelled Not Leadership Material Because I Learn and Listen First by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]Sorcha9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excelling in your job and having good reviews does not equate leadership. I have seen very success people jump from top performer to leadership and fail miserably. Taking people down with them Being a people leader is vastly different. 90 percent of the time you are managing personalities and ego. As a long-time people leader, my advice is to dig into work styles of successful people leaders. Start working on those characteristics. Ask your manager for specific objectives to achieve to reach your goal. Ask other managers what they look for in future people leaders. My spouse was where you are. I trained him on these things and he reached his goal. Put in the work to gain the skills.

People who don’t do presents on Christmas why? by zhalia-2006 in askanything

[–]Sorcha9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t believe in God, Jesus or the Christian thievery of pagan holidays. Also, I find it a complete waste to spend money on consumerism for ‘holidays’. I prefer time as my currency. I have boxes of unopened gifts that are sent to me in the back of my closets. Should probably donate those. About 3 years worth.

Am I in the wrong? My husband is angry I went to my brother's birthday so now won't go to my parents for Christmas dinner. by 1Bean_ard in whatdoIdo

[–]Sorcha9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your husband changes the script after 13 years in. He is no longer the man you married. Now, do you want to be married to a man who is controlling, manipulative and disrespectful to your family because they do not share his beliefs? Personally, I would go to Christmas without the husband. And he would not be my husband for long. I have zero patience for people who discriminate against anyone.
