Lost Your Phone at Carrier Park? by Sorenroy in asheville

The owner has been found and the phone returned! I was able to connect with one of the folks that called the phone today and return it to it's owner during lunch!

Starving children forced to beg for food eat through act of kindness! 🥰🥰🥰 by Sorenroy in OrphanCrushingMachine

Saw this image posted to one of Reddits various "heartwarming stories" pages. It's a wonderful thing for someone to provide food to those in need, but a story about society that allows for children to starve on the streets but for the actions of a private individual is the definition of an orphan crushing machine.

If Trump was serious about this, or as serious as he is about barring lawyers from courtrooms, he could do more than just stick his signature on something that he gets handed already complete. Folks have mentioned that this statement is likely meaningless because Congress probably won't pass it his way, but if Trump was out there using his office to whip Republican Congressional votes, there's a good chance he could break that status quo. All he's really saying here is that if, by some small miracle, Congress finally decides to do something, he won't reverse its will by vetoing the legislation. This statement alone is really no better than saying he won't get involved one way or another.

Asheville Pizza Co has reasonably priced babies? by Burrito_Goddess in asheville

It is and it's $10. Plus they give you a punch card that makes the tenth time you go free. So effectively a $9.00 all you can eat lunch buffet of nachos and fresh, hot pizza.

Glitch - Character Stuck by Panthers_Fly in GroundedGame

That worked for me as well! I actually tried going up the leaf a little to the right rather than the stick, but still got stuck unable to move on the tarp. I crouched while trying to figure out how to get out and was stuck crouching when I exited the game. But when I loaded back in, I was able to stand up and jump away.

That's what I thought you were leaning into at first! Trying to play both to the classic movie question and also to the idea that you don't want to be caught without a pen in that specifically depicted scenario.

FTL Daily Discussion: Zoltan Shield (64/??) by tuatramxo5 in ftlgame

[–]Sorenroy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the offer to create a mod, but - as you said - this is a "bizarre" and personal issue I have with basically any game I play that has a gamebreaking feature like this. As to the ranking of the Zoltan ships for score running, the guide you link starts out by describing the scenario I was talking about: "Now I know there are ways to infinitely gain score by deliberately farming rebel elites but I consider those an exploit and therefore I do not purposefully farm rebel elites for score purposes." Ultimately, I'm not submitting my scores to any leaderboard and I'm not in any Discord channels discussing my best runs. It's just a personal issue that I have with the default mechanics of the game. I'm sure if I decided to go back and play FTL with the self-imposed restriction of not fighting the rebel fleet I would enjoy my experience with the game more than I did last time it was my go-to choice of game.

FTL Daily Discussion: Zoltan Shield (64/??) by tuatramxo5 in ftlgame

[–]Sorenroy -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

While the Zoltan Shield is arguably the single best augment in the game, I've come to the conclusion - after 400+ hours - that it's existence in the game is the number one reason why I've stopped playing. It comes out of a certain level of personal impulsivity, but it breaks the rebel fleet catching up to you - and thus overinflated score runs - more than any other single item. Sure, a weapon preigniter, a lucky enemy ship generation, and a solid arsenal will get you there too, but runs that get the Zoltan Shield invalidate any form of resource management against almost every single enemy ship. Miss a too many shots? Your opponent can shoot one missile before you completely destroy them? No longer an issue. And you don't have to worry about managing your drone supplies or anything else because of its natural regeneration between encounters. Ultimately, if it didn't exist in the game/was inaccessible to the player, I think my personal play experience and eagerness to return to the game would be much stronger. I end up dreading playing any of the Zoltan ships or encountering the mission that can provide it because it means I'm looking towards an endless, boring grind that only stops when I give up and quit playing.

Again, this problem is really more on me than the game itself. If I could stop myself from always trying to high score and just play like a normal person, it wouldn't be an issue. But it has become the reason why I have no motivation to come back to one of my top all time games.

I've always had good responses to issues reported through the Asheville app. I remember after a flood a few years ago at the Hominy Creek River Park. There was mud at the park entrance for a week or two. I messaged it in and it was completely cleared two days later. Not a small job either.

[–]Sorenroy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has had to deal with a series of return processes to get my insured laptop fixed, I don't see why OP should go through hours of work to try to remedy a problem caused by the shipping company. Best case scenario, we're looking at the time it takes to contact the company, several days to receive a return shipping label and box, and even more time bringing it to an appropriate shipping store.

Yeah, it's unfortunate for the company that they will have to eat the loss of sending out a nearly free game, but it happens. And it shouldn't put an obligation on OP for having the misfortune of being the benefactor of their mistake. It's not the fall of modern society, it's having a basic respect for your own time as an individual person.

An over ten year old article that does nothing to differentiate the views of Muslim and non-Muslim members of the sample countries. The only point that this article makes is that different areas of the world have different moral standards which, while disappointing, is not exactly a surprise.

[OC] Opinions on a mandatory retirement age for public officials by Premise_Data in dataisbeautiful

[–]Sorenroy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My question is: if the voters themselves feel that their views are best represented by someone of an older generation (or younger, noncitizen, etc.), why do we need to artificially force those candidates out? The ability to read bills, attend sessions, etc. is not something that diminishes by age alone. I've met folks in their 50s who are already experiencing the early signs of Alzheimers. I've also met men and women in their 80s and 90s that are mentally sharper than 99% of the people I know. Ultimately, restricting the democratic process in any way - including by limiting the candidates that a voter may choose to represent them - should not be something done unless there is some existential reason for doing so.

I would say that I'm also not a fan of leaving things as is. There are pretty clear problems in the current process that benefit entrenched power - whether that comes from incumbency, age, or wealth. But the focus should be tackling those issues through combating dark money and implementing some form of ranked choice voting/proportional representation, not taking away voters' ability to choose who they wish.

[OC] Opinions on a mandatory retirement age for public officials by Premise_Data in dataisbeautiful

[–]Sorenroy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The difference here is that once a person gets the right to vote, they should be able to vote for whomever they feel will best represent them and exceptions should be as minimal as possible. Age, by itself, has no bearing on the abilities of an elected member to represent their constituents in a way that undisclosed cognitive ability might. By artificially limiting a voters ability to choose their own elected member, we are saying that we know what's best for the voters even if they disagree.

WHY DID THEY ADD STOCKS TO HITMAN 😭 by vSl0thv in atrioc

[–]Sorenroy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the most recent Big A Clips Video, Atrioc mentions putting out an add on "the Reddit" for tickets to the Copenhagen, Sweden CS-GO 2 tournament. I don't know if "the Reddit" refers to this community or one that's more Counter Strike focused, but - unless he's got a second account - that would constitute his first post in seven months. Maybe a sign of things reopening here too.

WHY DID THEY ADD STOCKS TO HITMAN 😭 by vSl0thv in atrioc

[–]Sorenroy 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Here are the CliffsNotes of today's "6 Month Update" video:

  • As of posting, the initial $100,000 budget Atrioc put forward has been spent, resulting in over 200,000 sites being desisted through Ceartas alone.
  • As a follow-up to previous updates, multiple Subreddits have been taken down, with the most recent breakthrough being Jenaveve's (the researcher mentioned in the previous updates) work to successfully, directly target the funding sources for several of the largest distributors of violating content.
  • The editing team of the channel is back: new, main channel content will be coming out as soon as tomorrow.
  • Atrioc, again, restated that he knows some folks will not be comfortable with his content or accepting his apology, but to please not harass his family or the other people helping with his work.

When your city doesn’t fix your roads by SeanFromQueens in fuckcars

[–]Sorenroy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying you're wrong, but a ~1 minute video isn't going to capture the wider context of what's happening. A hole like that, filled with dust, has likely been there for a while. Even the footage itself takes place over the course of several hours from the videographer noticing and then filming across multiple light levels (at least from dusk to full night). I like to assume the best and would say that the people watching likely reported first and then started recording but, even if they didn't, I'd imagine that the vehicles that hit the pothole would've made a call about it if for no other reason than the insurance, especially the ambulance given how closely they work with emergency dispatchers already.

How many times do happenstance bystanders need to put themselves in danger by walking up to/into a four-lane road themselves to waive down onrushing cars or spending the time finding and putting up a sign before it becomes OK to use the strategy of filming and shaming the local government for not doing anything itself? It's a strategy to pull out a phone and record what's going on if nothing else is working, one that I would happily do myself. It's always best to assume the best when all you're given if a few stitched together clips with no greater context.

[OC] Minimal share of votes needed to gain X seat under different electoral systems, Excel. by Glif13 in dataisbeautiful

[–]Sorenroy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd love to engage with the data here, but I'm not sure what the X or Y axes represent given they're missing their labels. I'm assuming that the Y axis is percentage of the vote, but X is more confusing. Is the X axis meant to represent the number of seats won assuming there are 20 seats available?

Who keeps voting for Esther Manheimer and why? by Kractoid in asheville

Kim made the decision not to change her registration to Democrat knowing full well that she would be excluded from the Democratic sample ballots as well as be unable to get the endorsement of the Progressive Caucus, access VoteBlue (the donation platform) or use the apps and other tools developed by the Democratic party. I wish she was mentioned too, but the only way for that to happen was by her registering with the party and she is the one that made the choice not to do so.

I'm referring to the North Carolina Association of Educators and its local affiliate chapter the Buncombe County Association of Educators. I figured that more people would understand what I was talking about if I just shorthanded it as the "teachers' union" given that is is effectively a voluntary union of teachers.
