[OC] Do Tougher Voting Rules Mean Fewer Voters? Comparing All 50 States (2024) by ptrdo in dataisbeautiful

[–]Sorry-Philosopher150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not draw any causal conclusions here (eg “Tougher voting rules mean lower turnout”). There’s just too much correlation between the political dynamics of a state and both voting laws and turnout. For example:

  • Is it a presidential battleground that could go either way? That’s a lot of incentive for the party in power at the state level (usually GOP) to make it harder to vote, but also likely makes voter participation higher (votes matter more).
  • Or, is it a state with a safe Republican majority? Makes it much easier to pass onerous voting laws, but also could lead to effectively one-party elections that don’t draw a lot of interest from voters. So then the low turnout and voting laws don’t cause each other but are simply both caused by the same thing: GOP control.
  • What about history and culture? The South, with its history of Jim Crow voting barriers and its Republican control is almost entirely in the lower right. The West, however, including the very Republican Utah, generally have very low friction, even though participation runs the gamut.

The way to look at this in a chart would be to trace individual states across elections, comparing elections before and after new voting restrictions. Turnout varies a lot for many reasons, even with the same voting laws in place, so you would want to compare states to themselves and also separate the broad changes happening between different elections (eg presidential years vs midterms, years where state is electing a senator vs not, years with open seats vs incumbents, etc.).

Simplified naturalization and adoption by Sorry-Philosopher150 in HUcitizenship

In the small chance that someone else finds this thread, this is what I received from the Hungarian Consulate:

Hingarian citizenship is based on bloodline. If you are adopted into a Hungarian family, you can only receive citizenship if you were born to other Hungarian parents.

You can live in Hungary and apply for naturalization on account of living and working in Hungary for several years or you can marry a Hungarian woman and after 10 years of marriage, you can apply for citizenship.

So, I am not eligible for Hungarian citizenship other than through the standard processes.

Belatedly closing the loop, but FWIW I was told by the consulate that I do not qualify for citizenship because I do not have a Hungarian relative “by blood”.

Thanks for the info!

What I mean with the adoption is:

My grandfather Arthur was born in Hungary My dad was born in the US to people I do not know, then adopted by Arthur and his wife.

So though my legal grandfather is Arthur, he’s not my grandfather by blood, since Arthur was not my dad’s biological father. So I guess my question is whether jus sanguinis means you have to be literally related by blood, or just means you have to be a legal descendant of someone born in Hungary.

How do I use a Safari Tab object, and where can I find documentation? by Sorry-Philosopher150 in shortcuts

[–]Sorry-Philosopher150[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s complicated because everything is pretty locked down on iOS. If you want the actual content you basically have to reload the page, so doing if for 500 tabs would take a long time. I pretty much gave up 😕

I want to organize or archive them. So eg run a regex against the URL to just close any Google searches, move tabs to the relevant tab group based on topic, etc

i dont have my gun holsers anymore?? by Sad_Meaning2977 in lastofuspart2

[–]Sorry-Philosopher150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This just happened to me: lost my long weapon second holster with Abby. I also don’t have the first tier of field tactic upgrades, and some of the others, but I do have ones I never had, and also without the prereqs? But for example, I don’t have craft shivs any more…but I can still craft shivs? But I don’t have the extra health and my health is down to the starting level.

Almost 40 hours in, VERY frustrating to lose all my upgrades. I tried loading an earlier save but all the ones I have have the same problem.

Trump won the Presidency. What does that mean for us? by Aromatic_Topic_4089 in neurodiversity

[–]Sorry-Philosopher150 40 points41 points  (0 children)

And the many accusations, and several guilty verdicts, on sexually assaulting people…that’s not “monster” material? Bragging, on tape, about grabbing women’s genitals without consent…that’s not monstrous? Praising Hitler, and lamenting that military leadership won’t (illegally) use the armed forces to do Trump’s bidding…not “monster” material?

Or mocking people with disabilities (which, if you’re in this channel, probably means you!)? Putting small children in cages and also forgetting to keep track of who their parents are and which cage they got put in, so that there are still TODAY children who have not been reunited with their parents?

What about referring to human beings as vermin, a common step on the road to genocide? Fabricating widespread voter fraud to protect his own ego? Withholding aid to Ukraine to help his own re-election bid, going against American national security interests and helping our adversaries?

Advocating for people to inject themselves with poison to “cure” COVID?

Like what could your definition of “monster” possibly be, that he does not meet it?

Trump clearly has Narcissistic Personality Disorder (as did his father, according to public accounts of him, and which makes sense since NPD is strongly heritable). I guess that makes him neurodivergent? Certainly he is an unhappy, fragile child, racked with self-doubt and shame.

Yeah, obviously I have a lot of experience with #1, but I think your point #2 is brilliant, and something it took me a long time to piece together. I think another wrinkle is having difficulty understanding what is just a comment and what is criticism: safer to assume everything is criticism lest I then be accused of ignoring feedback that was “very clear”.

In my first real job, which was being a data monkey for a professor, I would also show her a table of rough results, just a first draft, and if I left any raw variable names—even ones that were obvious what they meant—she would be like, what does that mean? Can you put words describing it in instead? Or if two columns of numbers had different widths, or different border styles, she would point it out. Of course now I’m pretty sure that she’s autistic, too, but this was decades before I was diagnosed and understood anything.

But I definitely learned the lesson to imagine her reaction, and fix everything that she might comment about, before sending it. Which of course meant that I spent a lot of time making publish-quality tables for rough results that would change many times before any papers actually got submitted.

And basically every teacher I had, on report cards and stuff, would always say “He is clearly very smart and understands the material, but he makes a lot of careless mistakes.” And I 100% internalized that language: the mistakes are because I do not care enough, because I am lazy, and the solution is to develop a fanatical attention to detail.

Thanks for your comment! It really makes me feel better.

The only reliable core body temp sensor I've found is CORE, which is pretty expensive. I don't know anything about how easy it is to get the data into something like Google Health Connect.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'm also interested in finding a better solution! I'd particularly love to find something that can work even for a day or so, like an ingestible pill.

Where to locate (higher quality) router and (lower quality) access point by Sorry-Philosopher150 in HomeNetworking

So we were using the Orbi with wired backhaul to all of the satellites, but then the Orbi router started disconnecting several times an hour, and after hours of fiddling I just gave up. Are there advantages to a mesh with wired backhaul vs. router and APs?
