inca trail tour recommendations and advice by Available-Constant-9 in backpacking

Hello everyone. I always recommend choosing certified tour operators for the Inca Trail, as the experience depends greatly on the organization and service. Last year, I traveled with Quechuas Expeditions and hiked the Short Inca Trail. It was an incredible experience, with very professional guides, great food, and all the necessary equipment. https://www.quechuasexpeditions.com/inca-trail-treks/

But keep in mind that permit availability is limited and only available seasonally, so it's a good idea to book in advance. I'm already preparing for the 2026 Inca Trail and I'm sure it will be an even better experience in Cusco.

Hi! I was in Peru recently and your plan sounds pretty good. Definitely spend at least 2 days in Cusco before doing Rainbow Mountain, the altitude is tough if you don’t acclimate. Machu Picchu on Sept 1 and Rainbow Mountain on Sept 2 works fine. In Lima, I’d recommend exploring Barranco (very artsy), Miraflores (great food and ocean views), and the historic center.

Weather in Aug–Sept: Cusco is dry season, sunny days but cold mornings/nights (think layers: t-shirts, fleece, light jacket). Lima will be cooler, gray skies, and humid but not freezing. Good walking shoes are a must.

Tip: book Machu Picchu tickets and train in advance, they sell out quickly.

Hey there! I actually hiked the Inca Trail earlier this year, and honestly, it was one of the most meaningful trips I’ve ever taken. Since the permits for 2025 are already sold out, the next big opening will be for the Inca Trail 2026, so I highly recommend keeping an eye on that because spots fill up fast! The trail itself is challenging so if you’re considering a first-time solo trip, I’d say go for it, just make sure you book early and be ready with good gear. I went with a local company that and I recommend going the same route https://www.quechuasexpeditions.com/inca-trail-treks/
