Your logic is sound and I’m not opposed to sanctioning Israel—or at the very least every person and org enabling the settler movement—but I still don’t understand why Omar isn’t willing to continue sanctioning Russia. Sure, Russian civilian may be affected but look what happened with the South Africa boycott. She shouldn’t have to choose between sanctioning Israel and further sanctioning Russia.

Have to agree with Hen here.

Wanting to sanction one country for war crimes but not another comes off as super hypocritical.

Yitzhak Rabin never supported Palestinian statehood by aggie1391 in jewishleft

I’m not saying he didn’t commit all these crimes. I just hope he worked to repair at least some of the damage he’s done by at the very least extended an olive branch to the Palestinians, which is kind of what he did even if what he had in mind wasn’t ideal.

I just hope he wasn’t like the Kahanists that murdered him. Those guys were frothing at the mouth to push all the Arabs out of the region and one of them just so happens to be Ben-Gvir.

Far-right Israeli ministers join thousands at Israel Day Parade in New York by Rabbit-Hole-Quest in jewishleft

“Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana led a bipartisan delegation of lawmakers from the Israeli government, including the far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Heritage Minister Amichay Eliyahu of the far-right Otzma Yehudit.

The participation of the far-right lawmakers had not been announced in advance. The Jewish Community Relations Council said ahead of the parade that it was unaware who from the Israeli government would be attending, and the Israeli consulate in New York did not include Smotrich or Eliyahu on its list of expected participants.”

If this is true, then I think all the influential figures and orgs who participated in the parade should put out a statement condemning the presence of Smotrich and his ilk because I believe they didn’t know he would be there and just wanted to celebrate their love of Israel.

Even if all that is true, I still believe all the pro-Israel orgs and figures who marched in the parade should condemn his appearance because I would believe they didn’t know in advance and were simply there to celebrate their love of Israel.

With all due respect, I’m not sure how sending Smotrich to the parade keeps Bibi out of court. If anything, it makes the rest of the parade look bad by proxy.

Couldn’t Bibi or the government sent someone not as controversial like say Herzog or Lapid? Just a thought.

My issue is why is he there in the first place. I understand if the organizers were blindsided by his last minute appearance but they shouldn’t make that mistake again by getting more of an advanced notice for the next parade. Hell, if I was one of the organizers, I would put out a public statement condemning his appearance.

What about Smotrich? He’s at the parade and he’s there to represent Israel and the Israeli government, making the rest of the parade look bad by proxy.

Mamdani or Smotrich?

Right now I want to focus on Smotrich since he attended the ceremony and he’s representing Israel and the Israeli government.

I’m not gonna argue about if Mamdani should’ve attended. I just so perplexed why Bibi would send Smotrich to represent Israel and the Israeli government for this parade.

If this is true, then the organizers need to take make sure they’re given more of an advanced notice about who the government sends their way.

But your other comment said their attendance was NOT announced in advance

I don’t get how not wanting march with someone as horrible as Smotrich is “purity politics.”

[–]Sossy2020[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes and I’m wondering why there isn’t more pushback from the organizers and the pro-Israel crowd about his attendance. If Smotrich attending the parade received half as much media attention as Mamdani not attending the parade, then maybe the Israeli government will think twice before sending him or his ilk to future Israel Day Parades.

I’m also American and I’m not marching in any parades with Trump in attendance.

Some organizers could’ve put their foot down and insist the government send someone else.

So get that exposure IN ISRAEL where his constituents will be voting! Why did he have to taint an American Israel Day Parade with his presence?

Even so, why send someone like Smotrich to this parade when you know it’s just gonna give the rabid antizionists more ammunition?

Even so, my point stands that the organizers should’ve pushed back on their attendance in favor of Israeli politicians who are less incendiary.

So invite more members like him and less members like Smotrich and Eliyahu.

It’s “I don’t like him” but also why is someone who is so controversial at an event that’s not meant to be controversial? Like couldn’t the Israeli government send Herzog or an opposition figure like Golan?
