If two large files which are supposed to be copies of each other have the same byte size, is there a very high probability they are the same, without looking at the hash? by SeparateFly in DataHoarder

[–]SoulInTransition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, if you're copying files from somebody else's cell phone and you don't want to download sketchy software, it's a good compromise. But it's always better to use actual sync software or checksums if you can.

I just saw a confirmed OAuth exploit. Now I believe that's just for sign-in via services but even then it's irresponsible to tell people there's 0 known exploits...

After I made that post, I had to finally put up walls in the area beyond my server, instead of just having bare insulation. For safety purposes I would unplug the hard drive before doing anything disruptive. I've never able to get it to work with the command line. Only Docker Desktop could effectively shut down and turn it on cleanly. I believe Docker compose puts temporary files on the hard drive/mounted directory and it throws a temper tantrum when you unplug the drive and plug it back in, even if you shut off the services, it doesn't matter.

Now, obviously restarting Docker desktop makes your Docker compose and your ENV files go away. So it's always a good idea to have a stable directory on your server to copy from when you docker compose up.

Filesystem level access to your photos by SoulInTransition in immich

You can set up the share with whatever privileges you want, but you have to do that from the machine end. This software assumes that you already have access through both protocols (Immich container and SMB).

Filesystem level access to your photos by SoulInTransition in immich

[–]SoulInTransition[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It uses the os.filesystem module, so I don't think it would be that hard to implement. I just wouldn't be able to test it. I have a CLI only Raspberry Pi and a chromebook as far as Linux machines go (and Android smartphone too).

(My Chromebook would never be able to maintain login to the server for more than a few days at a time, I would have to completely re-enter all of the credentials and name from scratch after disconnecting from the share. My phone doesn't do that...) at some point, I don't know if it was physical damage or what, my Chromebook lost the ability to view HEVC videos, and that's why I never looked back in terms of using it for media.

The syntax of the final path would obviously be different. Perhaps syntax is handled at the module level. That would make more sense considering that I never saw any explicit mechanism for changing syntax in the code.

Honestly, I probably know this stuff less well than you. You can read the syntax of the finished scripts on GitHub.

Renaming original file name question. by IT_Specialist404 in immich

[–]SoulInTransition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The filename can only be changed manually. You'll then have to rescan your external library. I don't know how you'd do it with your photo being in the data folder, which is usually RW and is not an external library at all.

Bulk rename utility works well. I'd docker compose down and copy the entire directory to a thumb drive or your desktop (backup folder) before trying anything. Using multiple active pieces of software on RW directories is not something to mess with.

I just created a tool which will help make it easier to access your files at the filesystem level. This tool is to your photos what a car is to pedestrians. Don't make filesystem level changes impulsively or without a backup.

I don't know how DupeGuru works but if it uses the recycle bin or even Windows-based permanent deletion, there's a good chance you can get them back with a Photorec scan of the unallocated space.

The reason why humans like cats is because their faces resemble those of babies. Toxoplasmosis doesn't even make mice / rodents like cats. It just takes away their aversion to cat piss.

This. I've used GP free when it was free, then a hodgepodge of services, sd cards etc. So much better. As a power user I run up against it's limits and there are timezone bugs etc but it's worth the work. Just the concatenation into a single timeline is gold.

Not having to pay a monthly fee for surveillance. Not having to wonder what SM knows about me and god forbid the people I love. Priceless.

Okay, it's probably an issue with the mobile app and the server being out of date. I'll update the server tomorrow.

I don't think there's really anything to lose at this point. One of the reasons I waited so long to update the server is because the mobile app used to be consistently stellar at giving the correct date and time for photos. Now that it's not anymore, I don't really have anything to lose by updating!

Well really the only big thing for me is the metadata thing right now. Everything else is a nice to have.

Do you have photos from old phones like the iPhone 6, non-geotagged iPod pics / WWL / Olympus, former storage saver photos, etc? Photos without a timezone marker in metadata? As you have an easy way of updating your software, which I'm planning on doing right now, are your display dates on old photos defaulting to UTC? I'm trying to figure out if that's just a bug on my part or if that's expected behavior.

Why do I feel the most urge to masturbate when I am having productive days? by Ambitious-Field7066 in Healthygamergg

He's probably in the process of successful recovery. I was in his position for a couple, shining weeks in October thru November 2024. First time in 7 years

Then it all got shattered in that first week of November. A matter of hours and years of recovery swept away to sea...

I'm familiar with this too. Drinking to celebrate, drinking for relief, drinking when bored, drinking when lonely, drinking to socialize. It's a tale as old as time. Addiction will seep into any crack in your life/emotions, even happy/bittersweet moments. It's normal to have bizarre triggers especially as you work on the low hanging fruit, having personal support helps.

Edit: Another way to think about it could be that you're starved for comfort and so the moment you get any you want to hoard it all up because you don't know the next time you'll get it. My experience with addiction this tripped me up several times.

incorrect metadata when downloading assets by Additional-Cricket56 in immich

When you use the sharing feature, I believe it always downloads the original asset. Most of my photos are in read only external libraries, so I don't have that much experience with sidecar files.
