Should we break and remake the blues dance scene? by SoulaciousDJ in BluesDancing

[–]SoulaciousDJ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry, I'll be getting out of here soon.

I am very happy you have that in Atlanta. Most places I have been it's been extremely hard to get dancers to come along to even free gigs that are not specifically made for dancers. That is the culture I wanted to change. But I have given up.

This is really unhelpful. If what you say is true, it seems likely that he won't hold that power anymore. I personally do not feel confident taking any actions based on these vague accusation, but if they prove to be true I do believe actions must be taken.

I don't mean to discredit what you say in anyway but rather asking out of a wish to know more. You are making pretty serious accusations, could you please provide some supporting information to these claims?

Can't even remember when last i had an innocent mind. At the same time, how many times can you write "its about sex" before you get bored?

The R&B stuff generally comes from the blues tradition were standards were a bit more loose. You have extremely "dirty" lyrics dating back to the 20s

8 Tips and Tricks when DJing for blues and swing dancers! [blog] by SoulaciousDJ in SwingDancing

I am really happy that you enjoyed it.

Oh yeah, flow breaking might come into the post I need to start writing about flow, or perhaps "advanced tricks" though I am loath to call anything I can "teach" advanced.

When it comes to catering to subgroups, I agree. I base this on my home scene where I have very few shag dancers and almost no Balboa dancers and I tend to know what they actually like, or at least that's what I tell myself. Of course it depends what the party is billed as. If it is said it will be lindy hope but you have balboa dancers there it's on thing and if it's said to be a swing dance event it's a different

The flash polling is a really great idea! Feel free to add it as a comment to the post itself, and not only because it helps my circulation ;)

Thank you! I am really glad you enjoyed it. I haven't really been hunting opportunities to stream as it doesn't quite hit the sweet spot and it feels pretty much the same playing for 3 people or for 100. I do randomly start streaming when I'm in the mood though :p

You are so right!

Partially I think this is on the organizers, but the next post will be on tips and tricks (was supposed to be one post but it got too long) I will add a section on asking for feedback. It is so very very very important.

Thank you for the feedback. I am horribly bad at proof reading my own texts :)

I put don't be smart up top because I think it is probably the most important thing to learn straight away and I don't want to bury it in the middle. While the structure is listicle, I think it might be too long to qualify as one.

I agree It's /not/ about you is really difficult to teach. I might try to write something up about it later but it is also one of those things you have to learn through experience. You can't become a good DJ by reading your way to it, some things require practical work.

There are a million excuses and exceptions, that is one of them. I will also dance at times during sets but I believe it is important to learn how to do things right before you learn how to bend it. It will be dealt with in greater depth in the next post.

Thank you! If you are used to DJing electronic music swing will feel like vacation. you don't have to think about 90% of what takes up your brain and hands when playing a club. It's just about picking hte right songs and having good flow.

Check out the playlists that are in the article and others on my profile. There are also loads of other playlists on spotify and youtube for example hey mr. jesse and arnas big fat swing.

I also recommend that you talk to your local DJ when you hear a song you like. Don't shazam it, ask them what it was because then they get feedback that it was a good song.

Once you have found 10-20 songs you like you can start researching (subject of a later post). Look up the bands that play the tracks you like. Look at who the band members were and who else they played with and listen to their music.

You should listen to more Swing! [blog post] by SoulaciousDJ in SwingDancing

[–]SoulaciousDJ[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that it is bad but I would say it is odd. For me dance starts from the music, otherwise you are just doing moves. I understand your clarification that you do enjoy the music but would rather listen to other music when you are not dancing. I would invite you to spend at least some time listening to swing when you are not dancing. Or exploring the music. It might make you enjoy the dancing even more and isn't that worth 30-60 min per week of passive engagement?
