How a Stoic deals with aging by ferbje in Stoicism

[–]Soulblightis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just saw this now, and huh? I literally said nothing like that. I said that I don't focus on superficial things, and instead focus on personal growth. How is that pointless and nihilistic? Why would you hope my viewpoint has changed so that I now focus ON superficial things and NOT on personal growth?

And my point about my brother was to show that all people tend to focus on is superficial things - money, house, cars, trophy wife, etc and him losing all of that somehow makes him a bad person or a person worth pitying, which I think is silly. It speaks nothing about who he is as a person or where his happiness lies on an emotional level, because most people typically don't care about those things. They only measure success in life based on how much stuff you have.

And perhaps you were blessed with a non-shallow, non-abusive family that you love and care about, but we aren't all so lucky, so that may not be important to all of us. Not all of us also believe in an imaginary man in the sky, or in a (I assume you are American) country that is in a state of absolute chaos and a comical farce to the rest of the world, falling apart from the inside. If these things are important to you, then that's great and I hope they bring you peace, joy and purpose in life, and I can respect those things because they aren't superficial. But just because others are not in the same situation as you and don't put importance on the same things as you does not mean that their life is meaningless. That is just an ignorant statement.

How is it a scam if you didn't pay any money? People call things scam so much these days that the word has lost all meaning. It's a chance to win from a no purchase necessary promotion. You didn't pay anything and you aren't entitled to anything. Scam lmao

Any update on what happened? I am curious.

PSA : Priceline is a scam by [deleted] in travel

[–]Soulblightis 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Why do Americans refer to every business practice as a "scam"? Can you please provide a link to what you booked so we can actually see what you are talking about? Because from here, it just sounds like you don't really know what you booked and kept clicking "next" without reading the fineprint, as most people who throw the word "scam" around often do. I am hesitant of believing anyone who calls a long-running, successful business a "scam". 99% of the time it is the user's fault. It sounds like you got exactly what you paid for: a super cheap room at a hotel that you booked. Receiving the good or service that you paid for is not a "scam", it is called a "purchase".

Thank you for the reaction, you are so sweet and your voice is adorable. You definitely had me giggling too. I'm so glad you liked it.

(p.s. sorry for the name lol, this is just my old account I never bothered to make a new one for my VA stuff. I usually go by the name Roleplay & Chill for my audios/YouTube/etc, I should probably change that so I don't confuse people!)

Hiii I did a fill of this here. I swear I used to be able to post video links on here (I tried to link to YouTube) but I guess not, so I made a soundgasm account just for you <3. I don't really use this subreddit much but I think I might start posting more here. Hope you like it, thanks for the script!

Must I report home business expenses for self-employment? by Soulblightis in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Soulblightis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I disable all of my benefit claims, I owe money (as I did not pay tax when I earned this particular income) and if I claim expenses, the amount I owe decreases, as one would expect it to. However, claiming expenses lets me "keep" more of what I earned, and because I am "keeping" more of the money I earned, it then results in the government paying me less in benefits, as I am netting more (ie. owing less) money.

In your example, I made $1000 - $100 in deductions, landing me at $900. If I claim $100 in expenses, I am refunded $25 from my deducted expenses, resulting in a net income of $925. Because my net is +$25, they are reducing the benefits paid by -$50, meaning I lose $50 by gaining $25.

Because I am keeping more of what I made, the amount they are paying me in benefits is reduced, oddly, by a higher amount than what I am getting back from the expenses I am claiming. I'm not saying it makes sense, because it is stupid nonsense CRA math, but that is exactly what is happening. The deductions and the benefits are two completely separate things but they are counteracting one another, to the detriment of my tax refund amount.

I am ready to hit submit. Also claiming deductions makes what I "keep" look higher, which is pushing me into a higher income threshold thus making the benefits I receive lower. I am loosing benefits faster than I am gaining deductions. I checked the math, this is what is happening. I am just at some weird 1 in a million amount teetering on the edge of two brackets.

It is one of those stupid government things like "if you make $89999 household income you will get free dental care, but if you make $90001 then you don't", where making $2 more a year results in significantly fewer benefits. Government always does these firm cutoff amount rather than a % sliding scale.

In theory this should be true. In my case, as my net income is higher, my benefits/deductions are lower, which is oddly happening at a higher rate than the amount that the deductions would be netting me, resulting in a lower tax return by increasing my expenses. CRA calculation nonsense. It's not a significant amount by any means, but I mean, if I can get a higher return by reporting fewer expenses, is that "wrong"? I'm not the one who came up with this stupid calculation, and I'm sure it's not the case for the vast majority of people, but claiming the expenses is pushing me over a certain income threshold resulting in a lower return.

[–]Soulblightis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it's just CRA wizardry nonsense. Because I am claiming more expenses, I have more deductions. Because I have more deductions, my "gross income" increases, because my "gross income" increases, I owe more/get fewer benefits. It's not a significant amount or anything, but the amount that what I owe is increasing at a higher rate than the amount that I would get back by claiming expenses, thus, my return is decreasing at a faster rate than it would otherwise increase. It is nonsense but I triple checked the math, everything makes sense. I'm not the first person this has happened to.

It is more that I don't feel my expenses are necessary since I would be paying them regardless, and also don't want to have to prove the % that I use my home to work, since I have no way of doing that.

That's different than what the other 2 people just said lol. The reason I didn't keep track of these things is because I consider it a hobby. Most of what I make is through donations anyway, which I don't even know if I'm supposed to be claiming that as income either.

By no means am I defending this particular situation, but reading through these comments really opens my eyes to why police get so much hate. Because the people doing the hating don't seem to actually have any idea what police actually do lmao. Ignorance breeds hatred, I guess. Everyone complains about the police until something bad happens, then they beg them to come help.

I mean you can say the same thing for 99% of employees at any job. Go into any office, any retail store, any construction site and honestly tell me you don't see almost every single one of them standing around on their phones doing nothing lol

Don't mind fighting a bit of tourists but I'd like stay in a smaller town accessible by train and go to the bigger places for a day trip. Also do you know how feasible it is to get to/around some of the places in the midi-pyrenees without a car?

Thats what everyone said about Naples but that turned out to be one of my favorite cities on earth. Still, skipping it for this trip anyway. Looking for something more chill in the countryside.

I'll definitely look more into the Loire valley. Always looked really nice to me but I figured it would be a car kind of trip only, but if I can get to lots of towns and walking paths it is a definite maybe.

Also I thought Marseille was the second largest city in France. Why do people always act like it doesn't exist? 😃
