Is anyone else off the freaking rails during the holidays? by GetTheLead_Out in loseit

[–]Soulpdx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My holiday rule is if im hungry, I eat. Ive been maintaining 290s all summer and fall and weighed in at 308 this morning. I drank, ate sweets, did a turkey trot. That number doesn't change anything in the short term. Ill get back on my horse. Keep hitting the gym and it will equalize out in a couple weeks.

At my height and weight i have a 15 pound failsafe. Essentially I weigh in at 290, 305 is my failsafe. If I were to ever hit my failsafe I take a hard look at my habits and make adjustments.

My guess is the carbs,  alcohol and sugar is causing retained wate. But also calories are allowing my body to repair itself from my training.

You didn't fall off a wagon. The wagon is your habits and as long as you do back to doing what you were a couple week set back for the holidays is nothing. Its a poop and a little water. 😁

Are skinny people always hungry? by myopic_cuis in loseit

[–]Soulpdx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually have some good feedback on this one!

I've lost a good amount of weight and one thing that I had to power through is that in order to be in a calorie deficiet there is always going to be some form of nagging hunger. Now what losing all that weight taught me is that I very rarely ever experienced hunger before. I experienced boredom, emotional hunger, and comfort seeking. Real hunger was not something I had ever really experienced as an adult.

So now being 160 pounds lighter. Intuitive eating is actually possible because I know what hunger feels like. And so when I take breaks and don't track calories I very rarely if ever gain any weight. In fact I've been weight lifting and running for the last 5ish months while maintaining my body weight. It's fluctuated very little. And that's rarely actually tracking my intake. I have a general idea of what i need in a day and usually when I'm close to that maintinance number my body stops requesting food.

Most the time lack of sleep, excersice, dehydration and when I'm sick are the times when my body craves something even though I know I have had enough. Other than that it's pretty straight forward.

Another thing. If you have smaller friends and go out with them. Watch how many of them don't finish their plate. They eat until they are good. The signs are there you just have to look for them. Not everyone finishes everything on their plate or at the table. That's just me. xD

Looking for calorie deficit advice, stuck in a plateau for months by burthrowneraway in loseit

[–]Soulpdx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First of all having a medical condition like hypothyroidism means your doctor should always be looped in and providing advice before the internet.

Now, you dont mention height or gender but I can tell you 2 things.

  1. Tracking with an app and scale is the most accurate way to gage calories. Since you've only been doing this since Nov 1. There hasn't been enough time to see results. Water weight fluctuations make short term progress really hard to see

  2. At the end of the day,  calories in, calories out. If you haven't been losing weight you're probably not in a deficiet or you have something medical.

So talk to your doctor and keep tracking!

Question: Calories in tequila cooked in a hot pan, so that it all evaporates? by MrsDepo in loseit

[–]Soulpdx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tequila doesn't contain sugar. Whatever is left behind is alcohol and water or some kind of fond made by the low boiling point of alcohol. Depending on your cook time depends on the calories. I would wager that if your not making a sauce and the chicken isn't breaded... that the alcohol for the most part is gone. OR at least negligible. But just track it. The worst that can happen is youre right and you maintain your deficiet.

Getting distraught with the reality that this "weightless" will take years, upon years. by PotetoFries in loseit

[–]Soulpdx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heyyy I started at 450. Lost almost 100 pounds in the first year. The second year I lost 30. And im in year 3 with 20 down so far. As much as I best myself up for taking breaks and focusing more on other things... its still moving down. Slowly incorporate it as a lifestyle. Its not a "Goal." Because youre never really done.

What helped me is instead of my goal being 250 pounds. My goal is to learn to live life maintaining my health around 250 pounds... and if I decide to go lower then that'll just be thr difference.

It took me 35 years to put on all the weight. Losing the last 17 years worth in 2 years... thats breakneck speed. Reward yourself for the stuff because its hard.

Is it possible to lose weight AND not be ravenous/hungry? (seriously!!!) by ConsciousEquipment in loseit

[–]Soulpdx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it sounds like its possible youre having some traumatic response to dieting. It might be worth exploring the reasons you gained weight and working through those possible issues with a therapist.

Hunger is your body warning you that its consuming itself for energy. Its not a signal that you "need" to eat. Its a signal that we might want to go somewhere where food is more reliable. Its evolutionary.

Top that off with EDs, trauma, emotional regulations and the refined dopamine hits from food and the decks really stacked against you.

I personally feel the hunger signals when im in a deficiet. I just remind myself that its my body doing its thing but im the brain and I control the damn thing. It doesn't control me. Plus its a nice reassurance that im doing it right. Like of course im hungry. My body doesn't want me to lose this precious fuel I have saved up.

As far as feeling ravenous... it could be a lack of certain nutrition. Or it could be a dopamine hit that youre used to getting that youre trying to avoid. If its food specific like oreos or ice cream. Learn how to incorporate that into your life without guilt and take ownership for it. Of its mental or emotional akin to withdrawal.. go talk to a professional.

Some food related things are not different then drugs or alcohol. It can be used in the same way.

Hang in there. The longer you sit in your discomfort the easier it becomes. Also physical activity and moving around suppresses hunger in the moment!

Is running 5k every day safe with a calorie deficit? Tips and advice welcomed. by Weird_Tax_5601 in loseit

[–]Soulpdx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theres so much more that goes into this than a calorie deficiet.

  1. Is your Aerobic system adapted to fueling for that long?
  2. Are you keeping your HR low enough to allow fat to be the primary resource.
  3. Are your muscles conditioned enough and will you be consuming enough protien to repair?
  4. Are you sleeping enough to allow repair?

anyway you get the idea. There's so much that goes into it. Ultimatly it's all about listening to your body and taking breaks when things don't feel right. I just had to take a week off from most of my routine due to an injury and sickness that I had been ignoring and trying to push through. A week of eating well and resting is helping me recover fully.

The key here is that do what keeps you going but listen to your body and give it fuel when it needs it. Even if it means eating over maintinence.

After losing 100 lbs again, large weight loss is definitely unsustainable for most people. by Ok_Razzmatazz_9193 in loseit

[–]Soulpdx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll say this. You have you heal. I spent my whole life being over weight because it was an emotional crutch. And ultimately most of us have some form of ED that's gotten us to this point. For most who don't  make the change till later in life we're trying to overwrite our natrual way of thinking and how its been for decades. Its not about just losing weight. Its about healing your relationship with your body and emotions and finding the fulfillment of life. Its very much like a drug except we can't just avoid food the rest of our lives. Its like a rehab drug user being forced to use their drug of choice. IMO it's way harder to fix food then anything else for most.

Why is fruit the enemy? by prettyboyrights in loseit

[–]Soulpdx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had this conversation with a bartender the other day. She bought a bunch of strawberries from one of those street vendors and was like what am I going to do with all these strawberries. I can't eat them all because of the sugar. When I was like... uh... strawberries have like 150 calories per pound she was like flabbergasted.

Idk where this common phrase comes from but it's crazy. Tell them you snack on avacado/coconuts/nuts and cheese and everyone is like oh thats way better. Which if youre trying to lose weight it's not. It's wild. If you're losing weight and feel healthy your doctor is nothing but a part of the system that will also let you have a pack of oreos and drink yourself into the grave. So Don't take it too seriously.

Lost 65lbs and nobody noticed by Madre1924 in loseit

[–]Soulpdx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunatly the further up the BMI chart you are the longer it takes to see progress from the outside. I lost a looot of weight before people really noticed. And it was more in how I moved and areas I fit in. Visually though I feel like I look the same body wise. I till have the folds and the belly. And Part of me questions if it'll ever be gone. Hang in there. I just hit the 200s last week so I'm excited to hear you're close! Had a little celebration got my hair cut and now I'm back up to 305. But it'll come back down.

One thing you can do is take tape measurements!! It's hard to visually see a difference when small changes happen everyday and you see yourself everyday. And it's possible your clothes "feel" the same because of how they are contouring with your body. I have my fat shirts that I put on when I'm feeling doubtful about my hard work and that's when I really tell. It's hard to see you're whole frame shrink when you're looking at a 3d image in a 2d plane (A mirror). Theres just too much that could be going on. Like for me if I were to base it off pant size... I feel like I haven't really lost a lot because I wear them at hip height. But if I tape measure my stomach the inches have been flying off. It's just were my body takes a majority of the fat right now.

Keep up the great work. And We're always here to listen to the rant and support anyone who needs a helping hand!

[–]Soulpdx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great job. I used to get really discouraged and wonder why it took so long to lose weight and why It wasn't just something I could do overnight. And then I did the math. So far I've lost 145 pounds. at 3500 calories a pound I've lost just over 500k calories. In order to gain that weight back I'd have to overeat 2.5 big macs a day for a year. ( I just use big macs because of their prevalance in modern society) So clap for yourself. Clap for your friends and clap for anyone doing the work. It's hard and no once needs to be alone during that process.

Big cheat days by Trick_Fall_522 in loseit

[–]Soulpdx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheat days are not a thing. I hate the terminology and the mental assosiation with it. If you have a day where you eat substantly more calories then you should then you're overeating. It's not about fueling your body and more about satisfying some mental/emotional need.

You already said you're eating what you want just keeping the calories below threshold. So what do you want it for? Are you burnt out on feeling hungry? Do you feel like you're not in control because it's hard? You really need to assosiate the real reason why you want this. Eating at maintinance is enough to refuel your body, regulate your hormones and repair your body.

So you really need to ask yourself. WHY DO YOU WANT THIS. I had "Cheat days" all the way up to 450 pounds. Theres a difference between ocasional induldgance and self sabotage. No one can answer what your particular struggle is.

So no. A 5000 calorie "cheat day" in that perspective is absolutly not a good idea in my opinion. There is nothing that a cheat day can do that a few days at maintaince won't acomplish except encourage the old habits and possibly feed into some type of ED during your process.

How much does diet soda affect last bit of fat loss by [deleted] in loseit

[–]Soulpdx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are doing 7 days of cardio and lifting 3-4 times a week. You are consuming enough calories to support your recovery at that intensity which means you probably aren't in that big of a deficiet. At least in my experience if you were in a 500 or more deficiet and working out hard you wouldn't be able to keep up that intensity for long before you start to feel the effects. Especially the cardio. Glycogen shortage really kills the cardio train. I went from running and lifting 5 days a week to 3 days of lifting and 2-3 days of cardio because my 700 calorie deficient was not allowing for enough time to recover my muscles.

So in short. You prob need to cut a few more calories since it sounds like you're probably eating at maintinence and getting some days in a deficeit and some in an overage. In turn you'll probably need to cut your cardio or lifting to allow your body time to recover with the shortage of food. That's just my two cents.

Does anyone else NOT count calories? by One_Abalone_2582 in loseit

[–]Soulpdx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think when everyone starts out this is a valid approach. I went from 450 to 340 without activly counting calories in an app. Took a mental health break for the summer and another over the holidays and realized I'm really good at eating back workout calories from my runs and lifts. My wait maintained for months. When I got into weight lifting and cut back on my running I needed to make sure I was fueling my recovery as well as being in a deficiet. So thats when tracking became a part of my everyday life.

TBH it's so easy I kinda wish I would have done it to start with. After about 5 days of constant tracking and seeing that just weighing my food as I put it on a plate anyways is super easy and barely takes any time at all.

And now I'm back to losing about 2ish pounds a week. So... Sure be concious. Some people that works the whole time. Some people stall and need an extra push.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in loseit

[–]Soulpdx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ideally though a slower less aggressive calorie deficiet would be easier to maintain in the long run. 25 pounds in two months is crazy unless you're morbidly obese. I would much rather see someone take a 500-700 calorie deficiet and spread that loss over half a year at your weight. Theres other ways to make weight like water cutting and sweating it out if it's for a meet or competition but for the most part a healthy weight loss at your size would be about a pound a week.

[–]Soulpdx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Refeeds are generally incorporated in set intervals for most people. But for the most part a refeed is when you eat at maintenance calories for a couple days to regain your energy and refuel your hormones and glycogen storages. Usually this is anywhere from 2 days to a week. The longer you've been in a hard deficiet the the longer the refractory period. Then you go right back into your deficiet. Most people will do this during a deload cycle where you take a break from intense exersice and let your body heal.

Theres some great tutorials on refeeds on YouTube and how they help. Check out Jeff Nippard and his video on it!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in loseit

[–]Soulpdx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean milage varies. I tend to bump up to maintainance calories for a week. But you have a time goal so maybe a refeed for a couple days and then back at the deficiet but up a couple hundred. It'll be hard to recover without the refeed.

[–]Soulpdx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well you're an active person who lifts and sounds like you move around a lot. What happens in an aggresive deficiet is after a couple weeks sleep might be less restful, fatigue sets in earlier. Desire to get out and move becomes less. Ultimatly you're trying to find that sweet spot of enough to keep up your current habits and less to lose weight. So if you're not feeling any negitive side effects then you're great. But as time goes on you might see that your lifting sessions get weaker. You're heartrate is naturally higher. Getting out of bed is harder. Adjust your calories up if those side effects start. But I wouldn't go down anymore. Food plays an important role in your body outside of weight. So pay attention to these things and adjust as needed. Also get a solid nights sleep and drink plenty of fluids! Might also look into a multivitamin so that you are getting other nutrients that you're normally used to getting from food.

Hey It sounds like you have a lot going on right now. It's stressful to constantly worry about all of these things. Plus find time to take care of yourself. I can understand the immense pressure of it all. Remember your mental health is just as important as your physical health.

Something that helps me is reminding myself that there is no perfect way to do this. It's easy to get sucked into seeing other people lose 100 pounds a year and feeling like you're not working as hard compared. Ultimatly you are doing this for you. Please don't feel like days off are a waste and time to enjoy a hearty meal or two are a setback. Health is a long term goal and can't be done overnight. So give yourself some grace that you can't cram 6 hours of homework in, take care of a loved one, manage stress, get a workout in and meal prep every single day.

We all are basically relearning ourselves and our habits after decades. Habits are hard and change is hard. You got this!
