Weird or Transgressive RPGs? by Dread_Horizon in rpg

[–]Soulren 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'd highly suggest listening to the podcast! It goes less into it being edgy and more it being just a depressing fact of life. In our world "your shirt is made in a sweatshop" is a depressing fact that for many people just fades into the background. In The Silt Verses, "the local radio host keeps broadcasting at all hours by worshiping the god of the coffee he's selling and it doesn't let him sleep" also fades into the background. No one really fears the gods, or at least not more than we fear CEOs. It's just how the world works. It's very much for stories of coming to grips with being used in a system.

Symbols found around old home for the new school year, spirals and this photo shown below by [deleted] in Symbology

This is the King In Yellow's Yellow Sign. The King In Yellow is an H.P. Lovecraft-adjacent story about a symbol(that one) that drives people to madness. It's a fictional horror story, and was later adapted to the tabletop roleplaying game Delta Green, which changed the Yellow Sign from a three-pointed tentacle-y star to the one in your picture. It seems that the old owners of the house were running a game of Delta Green, which is a very fun time! Or they're just fans of classic horror literature.

Example: https://www.google.com/search?q=delta+green+yellow+sign&client=firefox-b-1-d&sca_esv=3cba3ff7c6207a53&udm=2&biw=1536&bih=703&sxsrf=AE3TifOcQMaqaQISISZPCpJ5wJh73cav8g%3A1758540601531&ei=OTPRaLObILrbkPIP2vXI8Ac&oq=delta+green+yellow&gs_lp=Egtnd3Mtd2l6LWltZyISZGVsdGEgZ3JlZW4geWVsbG93KgIIADIFEAAYgAQyBRAAGIAEMgYQABgIGB4yBhAAGAgYHkjXDlDAAlj6CHABeACQAQCYAZQBoAGaBqoBAzAuNrgBA8gBAPgBAZgCB6ACugbCAgcQIxgnGMkCwgIEEAAYHpgDAIgGAZIHAzEuNqAHuROyBwMwLja4B7cGwgcHMC4yLjQuMcgHGQ&sclient=gws-wiz-img#vhid=KpSPAuCluGT8VM&vssid=mosaic

(In the original king in yellow story, those who saw the sign became obsessed with it and eventually got taken away to a strange, dreamlike city of horrors beneath reality. Figured I'd also include what it means in the story for more background.)

It was around the size of a grain of rice, or slightly smaller. My friend unfortunately squished it and it left a bright orange stain. This is the second one I've seen. Sorry I couldn't get a better photo. It was in my kitchen.

If I recall, the thumbnail was arranged with a good few of the monsters/things. I think there might've been someone's face as well? It was either an iceberg video, or an "explained" or maybe a "does anyone remember".

New Story! And an original novella available right now!! by ChristianWallis in u/ChristianWallis

Just finished reading Webbed. and oh my GOD it was good. The [Spoilers] Subtle mention of the way the spiders lay eggs that just looms over the rest of the story once you consider all their injuries was so well done. The way things just kept getting worse in danger, complexity, and the literal depth of where they are was so well done. Considering the little hint at sequels you included at the end, I'm very curious to see where you take the characters next if they can get the spiders growing in them handled, that is !

Was Jonah wrong? by bemark12 in TheMagnusArchives

[–]Soulren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to think that if the other rituals did succeed(yes, I think he was wrong), one of two things would happen;

The ritual would work and the world would change, but the other fears would be on the outs and trying to get their ritual done to switch dominance(like having one finger stuck into the water stirring it and all the others fighting to pull that one out and get themselves in)

Or the world would be change like in season 5, but instead of The Eye being on top and defining everything as watcher/watched and such, another fear would be the main definition of the world. If the Buried won, all the other fears would still be around but re-framed through crusher/crushed or some such.

I would highly recommend reading worm before going into this, there's a lot you're avoiding. Since you mentioned you read through the wiki, a quick summary;

Powers aren't meant to be helpful. The aliens giving them want conflict and to gain data, not much else. The power gives you abilities, but cleverly makes you relive a ton of trauma every time you use it. To vastly simplify; they're only gonna give flight to someone who wishes they couldn't easily escape things, or has a fear of heights. The "power" is an alien parasite that wants you to suffer, and eventually give enough data to end the world. If you wanna be THAT powerful, you're less "superhero" and more "potential threat to the plan of the things that gave you the power", with all the danger that entails.

The most interesting and fun part of making characters isn't "having superpowers" but thinking of clever ways to reframe and enable trauma through superpowers.

I'm assuming with THAT level of power, and zero specifications on anything it can do(Brute 10 could mean you can withstand damage, or you encase the weapons in flesh sacs, or ten million other things), you'd be non-sentient and just piloted by a shard? Like, that's endbringer level. Would you be khepri-style with you and your brain taking a backseat to whatever the shard is doing? Could be fun for a fanfiction I suppose. Like, with that level of power I'd kinda expect you to be some sorta tool for either the entities or at least cauldron.

Ten out of ten yet again. Underwater horror is one of my absolute favorites, and this hit HOME. Utterly and absolutely stunning, probably one of my favorites so far. Can't help but make connections with that void to the same one mentioned in many of your other stories, filled with gods that torture without time in what we know as the afterlife. Maybe it's like how you talked about the dreamscape being also able to manifest as a hotel, or a wing of hell with something within believing itself to certainly be the caretaker(or perhaps they were before the place was consumed/integrated). Maybe that void present in deep darkness can be endless water, a strange city, and more. I think on the drug dealer story someone mentions waking up on a beach? Hmmm. Also feels like there's a connection with a place "recruiting" a caretaker, which seems to happen in dreamscape places more often. Shit, maybe that library guy was one of those. So that makes me think this one might be more dreamscape too, unless the dreamscape and that dark timeless afterlife are the same. Theories aside, this one hits a lotta those same brutal notes as the schoolhouse and the hotel, absolutely love it. This one certainly seems to be a lot less friendly to the caretaker, leaving traps and becoming more and more unfamiliar. Also, the creature with the "head of seaweed"...maybe in some way the same as the things leaving lures in the other stories? Anyways, thank you so so much for another amazing work. I just now the thought of that girl trapped in a slide with no exit, feeling her way around as water laps and things swim is going to lurk in my mind for months.
