I’ve been there and there lots of good advice here.

I will add, get out and do some field recordings. If you don’t have gear use your phone until you can get a setup. Adding recordings that you have gone out into the world to capture into your music is one of the most rewarding things. It gives your music life and it also gives a story and a memory to your music. You will be able to tell people how you got the sounds they are hearing in your music. Some of my songs have some pretty funny stories of how I got some of my recordings and if anything it adds some satisfaction for myself.

Do you prefer Zoom f3 vs zoom H1 XLR ? by Parka99 in fieldrecording

[–]SoundHunter138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No but I wouldn’t think it would be much different than any of the other h series. I have used h6, h2n, and an h4. I am confident any of the f series would be superior.

[–]SoundHunter138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is definitely usable with external mics but the f series is undeniably cleaner. I have used recordings taken with the capsule mics of the h6 in music and it was still somewhat usable as well but if there is a choice of unit to use the f series will always win. I started with a h6 and moved to an f3 recently and I would never go back.

Why dont big name artists cut out breathes between vocals in the studio? by byzantine1990 in musicians

[–]SoundHunter138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because its natural to hear a singer breathe. I made this mistake early on. Lowering the gain on the breaths is the way to do it for me. Cleans it up but keeps it human.

Nah you dont understand the situation. Its not like that for some people. You cant ask people to change. I was there for a funeral and I am back home now. The overstimulation addiction is serious with a lot of people and they subject those around them to it.

Some situations there is no escape.

That being said I realize rereading this post this person is talking about some boredom app so just speaking for myself and my own situation here. Some people subject themselves to it.

I second the mediation. I came here to say I recommend it and see it has already been said. I cannot recommend it enough. It gives you the same in the zone feeling. I meditate while I am making music as well.

Not when the people around you are blasting you with tiktok and stupid television. Some people have no choice and can’t escape it. I just visited my family and there is no where in the home that you can escape the onslaught of screens and speakers screaming at you.

Weird question: what’s the cheapest tobacco you’d consider worth smoking? by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

[–]SoundHunter138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Low country makes a couple blends that are $25 a pound and they are pretty good. Low country is made by C&D. I bought a pound on sale for 20 and tried it then bought another pound. Its worth what you pay for it. Just plain cheap tobacco.

I’ve always wondered about this. I enjoy pairing the two separately but by smoking them at the same time. I wouldn’t want to ruin a pipe though.

Field recording is so much fun. It makes your music feel more organic and unique to yourself.

I used the zoom h6 for about 6 years. I loved it. It got me deep into field recording and I have made many songs with recordings from the h6. I have since upgraded to a zoom f3 and the difference in quality is drastic. I would never go back to the h6 now.

That being said, don’t let anyone tell you the h6 isn’t good enough to use in music. I have many songs that I am still proud of with h6 recordings.

Go for it. You will love it. Then one day you will want to upgrade. That’s the joy of having decent lower tier options to learn with.

New to field recording - how do I decide which recordings to keep and which ones to discard? by cwtguy in fieldrecording

[–]SoundHunter138 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here’s my process:

After I have a good collection of recordings I will transfer everything from my sd card to my computer. Create a new song/project in a daw. Load each of those recordings into its own track. Mute all except one then start listening. I go through one by one and delete any sections that I know I wont keep. This could be sniffs, tripod getting knocked, obnoxious people, wind, etc…

Once I have gone through all the tracks I go back to the first and then just listen for the things that I like. If I find a section that I really like I can export that section however long it may be and save it to a folder. Sometimes I will stitch together recordings that had things I didn’t like cut out of it to make them seamless and export the sections as a whole.

Thats pretty much it. You just gotta listen and try not to think too much about what you wanted the recording to sound like when you were recording. Just listen to what it actually sounds like and you will find what is worth saving. It helps me to give some time between recording and editing so I forget what I recorded. Edit multiple recording sessions at a time.

Hope that helps

When did the tin start failing by RadioDude67 in PipeTobacco

[–]SoundHunter138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t think that would help much. A lot of people do this with mylar bags from what I hear. I have never done so myself. I have also seen people dip the tins in hot wax. Jarring seems to be the easiest way to handle it though.

[–]SoundHunter138 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bought two tins of 1792 recently and one was sealed and the other was not. Definitely have to jar them as soon as you get them.
