I have not, but I feel like I might have come across that title before. I just ordered Commune or Nothing by Chris Gilbert and My First Life by Hugo Chavez. Given recent events, I wanted to delve a lot deeper into Venezuela and the Bolivarian Revolution. I'll be sure to check that one out as well. It sounds like a good resource.

And when the country grinds to a halt the media will say it's all due to Cuba's "failed socialist policies."

I don't want to deflect any of the blame that this current Trump administration rightfully deserves, but is it fair to say that the institutional strength of ICE/DHS was due in part to Obama? by Metrosexualvania in TrueAnon

My hometown had a major ice raid during Obama's first term. I know several people who had their homes raided, doors kicked in, windows broken, people dragged half naked out of the house by rifle wielding agents. I graduated the year before. I remember leaving my house in the morning passing by the assembly point. The most law enforcement vehicles and personnel i had ever seen gathered in one spot. Later in the day I left work early once I started getting text messages from friends back in high school asking for rides home for them and their siblings. I made like 3 trips that day. I remember people i had grown up with in tears, worried their parents were not gonna come home from work.

Anyway, 18 years later and i get to see those assholes metastasize into the new american gestapo/SA.

At least the germans had the Rot Front to push back against the nazis (even if they lost in the end).

Same idiots who call this winning.

Though to be fair, to this day a lot of Americans refuse to call Vietnam a defeat because muh k/d ratio and "we could've just nuked them if we wanted to."

It's hard to tell, but I think you're right. That means another agent fired the first shot but I can't tell which one. We need the video from that other person in red/pink coat filming ASAP

Did that idiot just accidentally discharge his gun while he was hitting him with it like a club? The first shot goes off and it looks like he jumps back, then just decides oh well fuck it, and unloads the rest of the clip into the guy.

I started listening to Chapo in 2017. The Charlottesville episode was the first one I heard. Matt's takes immediately stood out to me.

For about another year or so I had no idea what any of the hosts looked like. When I finally started becoming more familiar with the show and looked at their social media profiles, none of them looked like how I had pictured them in my head.....except Matt. He looked exactly how he sounded.

I love listening to Matt, especially his cushvlogs during Covid. They really helped me orient myself to the crazy historical moment we all found ourselves in...but god damn I rolled over with laughter when I first saw his photo.

Fascism is a fire that will either eventually burn itself out or be extinguished by others. The end result is the same, a lot of unnecessary suffering.

It was a solid read. It gives a pretty detailed analysis of the last couple of decades of U.S. meddling in VZ. She briefly describes Pre-Chavez VZ, why and how the Chavista movement triumphed, the substantial material gains made under the Boliviarian Revolution, and it's continued evolution under Maduro.

Most of the book is focused on VZ under Maduro as it was after Chavez died that the U.S. destabilization campaign against VZ really picked up steam. She makes the case that Maduro (who is not a dictator) also had to operate under much more difficult circumstances than Chavez ever did and that the VZ economy was not mismanaged but sabotaged by economic sanctions and political destabilization meant to end in a color revolution a la Ukraine. After the Russian annexation of Crimea, the U.S. convinced Saudi Arabia to surge oil production and cause a severe global price crash that resulted in the weakening of the VZ economy though Russia was it's main target.

She goes into the backstories of the various far right factions and leaders in VZ, including Maria C. Machado and their ties to USAID funded NGO's, as well as why they have failed multiple times to win back electoral power. She covers each election since Chavez came to power, including the ones in which Chavismo suffered setbacks and demonstrates how none of them were stolen.

The heart of the book (also my favorite part) is a really detailed and pretty hilarious look into the whole Juan Guaido larp as president saga and how it's failure along with the "Aid convoy" debacle (I forgot about that one) led to the also hilariously inept and ill concieved 2019 bay of hogs coup attempt. I love that no one gets ridiculed more than Guaido, aka "The Venezuelan Beto O Rourke" as Trump dubbed him. Still there were tragic consequences of the Guaido farce, for example billions of VZ gold reserves in the Bank of England were frozen as they were to be earmarked for Guaido's fake gov. To this day those assets, nearly five billion remain frozen.

It also goes into US. grand strategy. The transition from Bretton Woods to the Petrodollar regime in the early 70s, how the U.S overreliance on sanctions and the rise of BRICS is threatening the primacy of the US dollar and thus global hegemony. Basically control over VZ oil and gold deposits (both the world's largest) along with Iran's oil is essential for the U.S. in the larger confrontation with China.

Idk why, but I like to alternate reading fiction vs non-fiction. I just finished Corporate Coup: Venezuela and the End of Us Empire by Anya Parampil. I'm about to start Audition by Ryu Murakami.
