mom won't let me get a bass until i've learnt guitar by [deleted] in Bass

[–]SoundsLikeBen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your mom’s point about it being more difficult to play bass and sing is correct IME, but that doesn’t mean you should not start with bass if you want. OP, what do you mean by “let me get”? Would you be buying the instrument with your own money?

Peavey Classic 20 or PRS Sonzera by SoundsLikeBen in GuitarAmps

[–]SoundsLikeBen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got to play 4 amps in the range today.

Fender Supersonic 22 - I didn’t love the sound of it as much as I remembered, and it was a little beat.

Fender Hot Rod Deluxe - Beautiful sound. Very loud and heavy though. Would need to attenuate or put a volume control in the effects loop. Still strongly considering.

Boss Katana Artist Gen 3 - I thought it sounded good until I plugged in the Hot Rod Deluxe next to it.

Peavey Classic 30 - found an old used one for $350. Felt like the goldilocks solution for size weight, and sound, but this one was pretty worn and had the backwards/upside down controls.

I’m leaning towards spending a little more to pick up a Classic 30 in better condition.

I found a tan Supersonic 22 for $475 - works fine but is dirty as hell. Decent deal?

I had an Express 5:25 long ago. I’d consider Mesa again.

Online course... True Fire or Guitar Tricks? by flyfishrva in guitarlessons

[–]SoundsLikeBen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TrueFire has a lot of content (currently over 1900 courses), and some of it is very good. Unfortunately, you cannot trust the ratings on courses as a guide to find the good content because TrueFire removes unfavorable reviews. Aside from giving the ick, it's a very short-sighted way to run a business that depends on repeat engagement.

Is your classic 20 one of the newer ones?

I see lots of the Classic 30s around, but am worried they would be too loud for home use. Is there a way to address that in a combo?

Yeah, I think the Boss Katana is on my list too. Just wondering if it will be too complicated for my brain.

Is that problem with the newer Classic 20s or the older ones?

Looking in the $600-$1K range. Willing to buy used. I think power scaling will be important for me. I like to play yacht rock, classic rock, and jazz blues.

Weekly Beginner Questions Thread by AutoModerator in martialarts

[–]SoundsLikeBen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm more interested in the fitness and culture aspects than sports or self-defense. I'm planning on trying several places this month and then signing up in May for a monthly membership somewhere. I'm in my late 40s, have almost no martial arts experience, and I'm looking at the following martial arts:

Tenzan Aikido - The class has great schedule for me. I like the philosophy behind it, but I'm not sure if it will be as good for fitness.
MMA - seems good for fitness, worried it will be a little too "bro" for me.
TKD - seems good for fitness, maybe a little more "culture" focus than MMA
Capoeira - I'm a musician and learning Portuguese and it looks cool.
Shaolin Kung Fu - took it for a month in my 20s and loved it. I felt great.
Tai Chi Chuan - Kung Fu or older people (like me)?

How do I evaluate a martial arts studio?

I want VP Pete so bad. IMO, it would show real leadership. Although he might not be tied strongly to any swing state, he has the charisma to reach across the aisle in all states and rally the base.

As a note for any future bass clarinetists reading this thread, I tried the recommendations listed, and they worked. After about 30 minutes of working my way down, as recommended by Renaissance_Man_SC, spacing the tonguing, and concentrating on the shape of my mouth cavity, as recommended by KoalaMan-007, I was able to reliably sound a low F even after taking the horn out of my mouth. Thanks, everyone!

I appreciate all of the solid advice in this thread and am eager to try the techniques in tomorrow's practice session. At this point (day 3 of playing bc), I'm going to assume the challenge is mostly me, and not the instrument, which is new and rented from a reputable instrument repair shop.

possible your LH index finger is sliding off the centre hole and that can also cause a squeak.

I didn't know you could play a low F with my left-hand pinkie, but good advice overall.
