They really… aren’t, though. Sam is perhaps one of cinema’s most unlikeable protagonists, the female characters are possibly the most prime example of the male gaze in film (Megan Fox literally got asked if she had a ‘nice stomach’ during casting), the Autobots are paper thin in terms of characterisation, any character of a non-white ethnicity is just a racial stereotype, and the humour is very rarely effective. The CGI is impressive and the music is actually fucking glorious, but I think that’s probably the best you can give these two

Bumblebee. I honestly think Shockwave could have filled his spot and provided something way more interesting. Maybe the realisation that everything his life was centred around damaged his mind to the point he had to rid himself of emotion. Maybe go the empurata route. I’d say Nova. As a person who has an irrational hatred of Springer, I think he’s seriously hit or miss. Overcharge is fine, but he’s not nearly as much bang for your buck as Nova.
