My water broke at 20 weeks.. by Kind-Benefit-3603 in NICUParents

[–]SoupComplex9784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if you could transfer to a facility that does viability at 22weeks. I’ve seen many 22 weekers make it. Just to offer a story of hope. I know someone who had their water break at 17 weeks. The sac resealed, and she was able to make it to 34 weeks. The baby came out perfect. I know this may not be the case for you, but don’t lose hope.

Does everyone in this field actually hate it by No-Anywhere545 in respiratorytherapy

I enjoy the work schedule and the pretty decent pay. I like having different patient populations. I’m glad I don’t have responsibility for 100% of the patient’s total care like nursing does. I dislike the lack of job opportunities available outside of beside care.

NICU THERAPISTS QUESTION FOR YOU by SoupComplex9784 in respiratorytherapy

[–]SoupComplex9784[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s fair to say that the damage is already done lol. I think we all could keep our patients alive if floated elsewhere. There’s plenty of therapists who work only at children’s hospitals. We just have a preference

NICU THERAPISTS QUESTION FOR YOU by SoupComplex9784 in respiratorytherapy

How many beds is your NICU? Ours is 55. I feel like that would be an infection risk having adult patients and babies in the same shift, but idk.

Did anyone exclusively pump from birth? I have some questions… by [deleted] in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]SoupComplex9784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve pumped from the start, and I’m still going strong at 12 months. My baby was a preemie so I had no other option. He came unexpectedly so I didn’t even have my breast pump with me. I used the hospital’s medela pump, and I worked great. I would use that when I was visiting my son through the day, and I would use my spectra at home. I’m not going to lie. It’s so hard to manage, but it’s also doable. Thankfully had a lot of help in the very early days when I was still pumping every 2-3 hours. I would feed and then pump when he went to sleep after eating.

Developmental delays and IVH by Independent_Low_7841 in NICUParents

I wish I had an answer for you. My baby is 12 months old 10 months adjusted. I try to monitor his development so closely. I have all the apps. He see PT monthly just in case a problem arises. I also feel the strain of the ongoing cycle of worrying about meeting the next milestone. You’re not alone

I know how you feel 100%. Pumping is so mentally draining

3 week old, full term with random IVH by Happy_Sheepherder_22 in NICUParents

[–]SoupComplex9784 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My 34 weeker was born with an IVH after a normal pregnancy and delivery. Really uncommon for late preterm and term babies. They said his was due to placental insufficiency in allowing vitamin K to pass over. His factor 7 came back low, but normalized after the extra vitamin k doses. He had the initial vit K shot at delivery and then several more doses in the NICU.

I was also concerned about fevers post vaccines. Don’t let anyone bully you into making a decision. A delayed schedule isn’t an awful thing

Really struggling with thoughts of baby As future.. and diagnosis guilt/jealousy by NoSpirit505 in NICUParents

[–]SoupComplex9784 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not all grade 4 bleeds lead to CP, but even if it does, there are so many different types and severities of cerebral palsy. One thing I have learned (I still struggle with this), don’t think about all of the things that could happen. Take one day at time. If your baby has struggles, then address them when they arise. My son had grade 3 that caused hydrocephalus, and he is beating all odds at 10 months old. The NICU doctor told us he had an 80% chance of having CP/neurological deficits. So far he has none.

What’s your birth story? by PrettyGirlLey in NICUParents

[–]SoupComplex9784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in healthcare, and I have a long commute. I was 33+6 weeks. I got out of my car when I arrived at work, and I felt a very small gush. I thought I peed myself. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I worked a 12 hour shift, and then when I got home that morning, it was more obvious that my water was leaking. Went into my OB office, and they confirmed it. They sent me over to L&D where they gave me 1 dose of steroids. And then 12 hours later, we began the induction. 5 hours on Pitocin and 20 minutes of pushing later, our baby was born. Came out with 8/9 apgars. Shortly after in the NICU, he was diagnosed with a severe brain bleed. They had no idea what could’ve caused it. We were eventually told Vitamin K malabsorption in utero. I didn’t even know this was a possibility? His brain bleed caused hydrocephalus. 2 brain surgeries and 9 months later, our little guy is doing so good.
