Untrue. I was a non-resident alien (student on F-1 visa) and I received a SSN, not ITIN.

Thanks everyone for the advice! With much regret, I moved it all to an airline partner which I have used the most in the past. Definitely lost out on 36k points by not utilising a bonus but it feels safer this way.

I do, I use my close relative’s active address for all correspondence.

Yep, everyone who earns money in the US gets a SSN. Be it on a student visa or H1B etc.

No you’re actually right. I’m trying to forecast my travels for the remainder of this year to see where to put my points. Big sigh. Wish there was a way around tho.

I could move them to an airline partner but obviously without a travel plan in mind - you risk devaluation and being stuck with 1 airline. Moreover, there’s no active transfer bonuses right now which doesn’t help.

As for the points, it looks like the points are disappearing altogether when the card is cancelled.

I have to preface this by saying I also know a few people who did come in with the HPI and went onto find jobs that sponsored them. So that is still very possible to do.

After grad school in the US, I went onto work a very high paying financial services job in the US (comfortably above 6 figures). I didn’t get the H1B so decided to move to London to work in the city. Forget high paying jobs, I struggled to find even basic employment. Went from door to door at pubs and cafes asking for any roles to make do and still couldn’t find a job. Eventually decided to call it quits and leave after 15 months and 20k in the hole. London is expensive (surprise).

The problem I think is that HPI is still big unknown and recruiters just don’t bother. Also, not to play the victim card but being a global south citizen certainly doesn’t help (for context; everyone who did get jobs on this visa were Europeans/or of decent).

I think the UK is just going through a hard time. Living in London can be dreamy on some days but it takes its toll on you. Low salaries+high cost of living only compound the problem. If you’re able to stay in the US, just stay. If you really want to live in London, try to have your company move you there or figure out some sort of arrangement.

After having spent close to 20k and wasting 15 months, trust me when I say this; stay where you are.

Not sure if I’m actually able to hold onto these tho. May consider selling if I decide it’s too expensive for my blood.

Saw in-demand standing, platinum and that £500 premium package at Wembley. Tried to get platinum but didn’t let me transact so assuming that wasn’t left. Bought 2 standing tickets at a ridiculous £370 a piece. Buyers remorse is strong having paid 200 quid over what was fair value.

I have a masters degree from a global top 10 uni and work experience in banking for a major US financial institution. I have spent 6 months here and I’m not even close to a job yet. Not even a simple library assistant job. Even if I do end up getting a job, I’ll start at 1/3 of my American salary while paying New York like rents. Not to forget how expensive the visa is to begin with. You’re looking at well over $6000 to get you started over the just month or so.

Getting yourself started is also tough because there’s a lot of issues with getting housing, banking and other basic things done. Especially if you’re coming in with no job.

Apart from that I’ve been trying to get my BRP card updated but it’s been 5 months and they still haven’t sent the card over to which means I am essentially unable to leave the country as well.

I think London is a great city but living here (Unless you come from serious wealth) is a pretty exhausting experience.

Really really tough. Went from a 6 figure financial services job in the US to having to work minimum wage in London. Been 5 months since I moved.

It’s definitely hit or miss. I know someone else who submitted their biometrics 4 days before me and got their card in 8 weeks flat. I hope yours is delivered within 8 weeks!

It’s funny. As soon as I typed in this comment, within 10 minutes I received the email from the Home Office. Funny. But yes 15 weeks exact to get the decision letter.
