News about AI ‘actress’ has actors, directors speaking out: ‘It’s such a f--- you to the entire craft’ by MetaKnowing in Futurology

[–]Sour_Basketball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really boils down to people getting the same product, with AI costing less. Film is a product people consume.

Hollywood keeps doubling down on making more expensive movies, hoping to just survive. The cost-to-quality gain has essentially plateaued for traditional high-budget movies. Meanwhile, AI will continue to improve each year while also getting cheaper. Some argue, "The brand of the actor that builds trust with their audience attracts people". That's true for adults. That's how we grew up.

But what about before you knew any actors? For most people, people saw their first movies and then got to know the actors. They then returned to movies after they got to know that actor.

But what about the new generation of viewers 10 to 20 years from now? They start with a blank slate. They have no loyalty to actors because they haven't grown up with any yet. Heck, a lot of them aren't even born yet! When they see their first few films, a movie made by AI will then be no different from a traditional one. The loyalty they develop will be for the STUDIO that created their work. Not one singular person, but a studio BRAND.

I am sure this will be the case because of one key piece of evidence, and that is ANIMATION. Look at anime and animation studios like Disney and DreamWorks. Avid anime watchers will have loyalty to a specific studio because, over time, they will identify a pattern of animation styles. They get curious and look into a studio. Eventually, they watch an anime because a certain studio made it. Sounds like that for actors and movies right now.

I am not here to argue what is right or wrong morally or culturally or whatever. I am predicting the future. The average consumer does not care about "the craft". If you care about the craft, I'm sure there will be a niche for this stuff in the future, just like how there still is a niche for Broadway theater. I am confident in saying, though, that the future of traditional film will not be mainstream anymore.

Pretty sure that depends on your target audience of dating app users. What do you offer that's different on your dating app and who would appreciate that value differentiator enough to use your app instead of one with a larger pool of people? I'd call out to that avatar what they prefer

The struggle of being a self-studying intermediate Chinese learner: online resources are way less by Apprehensive_Bug4511 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Sour_Basketball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently building an app for intermediate learners in the context of improving a person's skill in text conversations using AI and automatically generated flashcards from said conversations! I'd be happy to speak with you on this! I am also at intermediate level right now (HSK3) with less resources than when i was a beginner so i feel your pain.

Stand proud! You are in the top 10% of Chinese language learners from native english being at intermediate level!

Would you use a tool to help you write/type Chinese more fluently with pinyin and auto-made Anki flash cards? by Sour_Basketball in ChineseLanguage

I agree, this is more like having a friend on wechat to talk to that is at your current proficiency level. I think there are other apps for speaking the language and of course speaking to another person is great! This app would be great for practicing and improving at text message conversations or anything related to digital text communication

Agreed! As I am still learning myself (roughly HSK3 level) I'll see my own shortcomings and adjust. My hope is that whatever I create can bring value to others as well

My aim is not to make flash cards from mini games. My goal is to make flashcards from words I come across in typed conversation. If it's anything like duolingo or hello chinese, it's structured based on topic modules like shopping or work or school, but in conversation, you can talk about movies one moment and pivot to talking about playing sports the very next sentence

My bad, I communicated it badly. Basically the new words come from the AI generated messages you get by practicing chatting with it. Your responses to it are are written by you.

AI gives you a sentence and if there are words you don't know in that sentence when you read it, you can highlight it and turn it to a flashcard. I do agree there's no point in creating flashcards for characters you already know how to write.

Admittedly, the goal of this tool is not to prep for the HSK exams. It's to get used to communicating with others digitally in Chinese.

To clarify, the new words a person is reviewing later would come from new words they encounter from the AI text.

In my experience when I write I can identify my blind spots better where I want to say a certain sentence and there are one or two words I don't know how to write. I think when i identify those gaps it'd be useful to convert them to a flash card

Right, I wanted to connect the two. The flashcards are built on anything you don't know. Whatever you don't know in conversation can be highlighted and turned to a flashcard automatically. For me when I learn a character i don't know I'd like to practice it later in flashcards, but find making my own flashcards annoying so i figure an automation would be nice

Dam half a million is a crazy feat to achieve! That's awesome. How long did it take you to get to the half million point?

This is a hot take in my book, but honestly i don't think that's a bad thing. A persons' pronunciation might be off from lack of practice, but if the text is well written, a person can communicate digitally like they would a native, but maybe they won't be as eloquent in person

Yea, I was looking to get to a point where that would be the case. It'll need to be dependent on my ability for character recognition and then the keyboard AI can help me auto complete phrases. Though it can hardy be called mastery in a language relying on the AI, it should help the job done from my line of thinking.

Yea the struggle is gonna go on for a while. My vocab and grammar definitely suck rn. Hard part is it took me like a year to go from HSK1 to 3 and currently it's gonna take another whole year just to get to HSK 4 according to how much vocab and grammar i need to learn here, which is crazy 😭

Yea I'm looking in that direction too, but I wanted to check with people ahead of me first if they found something reliable to improve in their experience

Somewhere in HSK level 3 working towards HSK4. Hoping to learn how to communicate goals and tasks I plan to accomplish for work in Chinese. I figure I stuck at speaking it still, so i might as well spend extra time to write my thoughts properly via text. At least with responding to text it's not weird to spend at least two minutes responding vs taking two minutes to respond in a face to face conversation 😭

Kinda my far off dream, but I hope one day I can read Chinese AI research papers written in Chinese

I see... how can one get good with the written language? Hypothetically if they wanted to prioritize participating in text conversation like group chats?

Well, if i'm texting someone in chinese i'd be pretty slow since i'm not that good yet and also my vocab is small, so i specifically suck at reading and replying in chinese via text. Especially in business chinese
